Fat Tony's is a Restaurant/Bar set in the historical 'Harbourmasters house' in the coastal town of Tathra. Offering a modern Australian menu in an environment that can be relaxed through to buzzing, Fat Tony's has just clicked over 14 years of operation. Book for a party group, a family get together or a night out as a couple. Drop into our funky little bar if it's just a drink you are chasing. If you are considering a night out please give us a ring to book and avoid any disappointment. We are happy to accommodate patrons without booking but note that our kitchen may be shut by 745/8 through the quieter times. Called and made a booking an hour before with a dress code of " if you're comfortable, we're comfortable." With 9 of us this is great. We had a small wait after our entrees but we were let know of this ahead of time by the very friendly staff. Even the teenage kids raved about their meals and affordable for the type of restaurant it is. Can't recommend this place enough!

Great Food, Enjoyable Dining

We enjoyed dining at Fat Tony’s. The atmosphere and decor is very welcoming. The menu has excellent variety with plenty of options that appealed the daily specials are also very good. The meals were very good with good sized servings and nice presentation. We could not fault the service and nothing was too much trouble, particularly on a busy Friday night. If you are keen to dine here, then reservations should avoid being disappointed. Thanks for your vote.

We had dinner there last night for my birthday and it was great. We had a lovely welcome from the owner and he made me a delicious Toblerone cocktail which turned into 3!! We were able to have a couple of drinks before dinner and then had a table next to the fire. The food was great, the service was great and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is visiting the area.

We booked here for a special occasion on our first visit to Tathra after reading all the great reviews but came away underwhelmed. While the food was nice we felt it was expensive for what you got which were small serves in comparison with the pub two nights earlier. The menu is not particularly extensive which is fine and we decided to start with the special scallop entree, but $19 for 6 small scallops was very disappointing and the battered fish in comparison with the large serve for less at the pub was not great. Lovely service from the wait staff was the highlight.

Food Great, Service Great and Everything with a Smile

Many restaurants in bigger towns could take a leaf out how this place is run. From the moment we arrived we were welcomed with a smile and ushered to our table for 10. The whole place was clean and tidy with very attentive staff. Once seated our drinks order was taken and were shown the specials board that just enhanced what was on offer. Entrees and bread came out and the table fell silent, a fantastic start. Staff were attentive to our drinks and were ready to take extra orders whenever we were. The mains were nothing short of brilliant. Everything was cooked exactly as ordered and all 10 meals were on the table at the same time. The food was something special but the service was even better. Smiling friendly locals showed what service really means. When the bill came out it was priced more like a local cafe. We were thanked for dining with them. We will be back whenever the opportunity comes around. If you are in Tathra or even the area you must eat hear. Probably the best restaurant on the far south coast.

I’ve been coming to Tathra with my family for years since I was a young lad, and every year without fail my parents always made an occasion of ditching us kids for the night to spend it at Fat Tony’s. I’m now in my early 20s and on holiday in Tathra with my partner, and decided we’d also make an occasion out of a night at Fat Tony’s. And boy were our expectations blown away! I had the ‘Fat’ oysters as a starter, you are mad if you skip out on these people! Been here a little over a week & have had oysters at every dinner we’ve been to. Fat Tony’s wins! For mains I enjoyed the pork belly while the missus had the linguine. Both were absolutely to die for! A+ to the chef! But the thing that really left a lasting impression on us was the service. Every member of the wait staff was as pleasant as the next. And our drinks were always full! Anthony also really goes out of his way to personalise each and every conversation and interaction he has with his customers. Coming from a service based business myself, this is all the more appreciated! Anthony & team, thank you for making one of our last nights in Tathra the most memorable. We will be back again & again in the years to come without a doubt!

Hits and misses

We'd been looking forward to dining at PTs for so long that the misses felt like a real letdown, especially for a special occasion and at phat prices. Hits were pork belly (excellent), steak specials (okay for around $40 a serve), the mini affogato and the coffees. Misses were prawn dish (9 dry, chewy, wrinkled prawns that were stuck inside their tails and were scarcely medium size for $33), bland sticky date puddings (seemed closer to banana cake) and the phat bread thing. What seemed most strange was the prawns in the chicken dish were fine, but the prawns in the prawn dish were awful!? Oysters ($3 each) were good and vego linguine was nice but plain. Venue was nice and staff mostly cheerful and attentive. We will try again hoping that it was just an off night ....

Hi John Would have been happy to have a chat on the night about how the prawns were cooked. Sounds like a mistake was made, which happens at times, and we would have been stoked to apologise and rectify it. I don’t recall any approach until the keyboard call out. Bit harsh on the bread. It’s topped grilled bread John, not a ‘thing’. Simple but bloody tasty!! Thanks for mentioning some positive’s with your visit. Why not in the current environment focus on those positive’s a little bit more. Perhaps you could have written a couple of lines about why the Pork Belly was ‘Excellent’, balance the negative commentary a bit for our chef. He’s a young bloke starting out and having a red hot go in an industry that can be very demanding. Let’s have a proper debrief next time.... Cheers, Ant

Tathra Culinary Magic

My colleagues recommended Fat Tony’s for dinner so I climb the stairs from the beach and made my way there. Thankfully there was a table and I made my choice from a number of tasty menu choices. My starter was calamari which was melt in the mouth and cooked to perfection yumminess. Followed by the Chicken which as also simply amazing. Portions were good so I did not get to the pudding but was tempted. Antony and his team are awesome! Welcoming, super friendly and attentive and I recommend this as another gem in the joy of Tathra. I will definitely return many times….I urge you to join me….I won’t share my food though!!

A lovely evening

Last went to Fat Tony’s for our 50th wedding anniversary; kids, grandkids & friends. Just three of us this time. Scramble up the escarpment steps in the dark, smart phone torches from and back. Sign in on arrival (has booked); menu clear and satisfying (one chosen dish unavailable ... no matter at all; menu and drinks service performed by a delightful young man obviously learning and trying hard ... winning smile solves all. Great meal great service, smiles all round and excellent COVID strategies. Descrambler down the cliff stairs, darker and more tumblerable but aided by the phones well fed, well tended and absolutely content. Thanks Fat Tony’s.

Amazing food and atmosphere

This is a place that we will definitely be back to visit next time we are in Tathra. The staff were friendly and the place has a cozy and comfortable feel about it. The food was absolutely amazing. The arancini and ceviche starters were just beautiful while the mains ( Prawn and scallop thai salad and beef fillet) were done to perfection.

Yo Tony your place is sick as bro! Seriously this restaurant deserves its no1 rating for this area, party of 4 had a variety of dishes and we couldn’t fault anything. Tony seated us and served our initial cocktails and he was extremely warm and welcoming. Calamari is crumbed differently to normal and should be tried. They cook steaks perfectly. Prawns on or in anything are brilliant.

Service second to none. The young staff were friendly and polite. Food was superb - steak was cooked to perfection Prawn and scallop salad was excellent Busy time of the year so was very noisy but we were glad they were able to fit us in at short notice and we were not disappointed.

This is our local fine dining and certainly the best food in Tathra. Anthony, the owner, is always gracious, friendly and welcoming. He makes the best cocktails (plenty of alcohol!). Spoiler alert: he’s not fat! 😂 The menu caters for most tastes and every single time they deliver a delicious, well portioned meal. The calamari and scallops melt in your mouth. The steak can be cut with a butter knife. There are plenty of options to dress choices up or down. I highly recommend visitors pay a visit to Fat Tony’s. Make sure you book ahead because they’re always busy. We will be back.

One star for the friendly wait staff and their enthusiasm. But essentially it was overpriced for the value. And as a vegetarian there wasn’t a single dish on the menu other than chips that didn’t have a dead animal on it. Apparently I had to tell them when I booked that I’m vegetarian. Really??? And the cocktails didn’t taste like they had any alcohol in them. There was supposed to be Midori and rum in one of them but it was pink and just tasted of strawberry sorbet. Went to the pub for the rest of my stay.

You're Disappointed!!!!! I'm pretty annoyed that you felt the need to get online and snipe. Have an opinion on what you see as value, no dramas. However people like you need to understand it's NOT OK to lie. Currently 6 main meals on our compact (for many reason's you may not understand), but adaptable, menu....... one of which is......... vegetarian!!!! Yep!!!! Really!!!! The insinuation that we serve drinks and leave out the alcohol is slander. Was it the friendly wait staff attempting to rip you off? Or me, owner operator for 14 years. I'm disappointed I don't have the ability to take it further :/ People like you just try to drag others down, bit by bit. Trip Advisor will not take this review down, how's you do the right thing and take it down yourself!!! Anthony

Great food...

Enjoyed 3 courses at Fat Tonys, all were excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed the Calamari entree, the steak main and the spectalular Sticky date pudding ( which inspired orders from a nearby table) completed a grwat meal. My partner also thoroughly enjoyed her courses (oysters, tacos and lemon merange pie - also inspire requests from the table nearby). If you're in Tathra, and looking for good quality, tasteful food, Fat Tonys is the place to go...
