Fishpen Takeaway is a funky fish and chip shop close to Main Beach Merimbula on the Fishpen Peninsular. We offer a huge dining menu including seafood, burgers, snacks, hot dogs, and more! Plus ice creams, coffee and drinks. We are open 11am-7:30pm everyday except Christmas Day. This is takeaway only however there are tables and chairs provided for your convenience. Some Gluten Free and Vegetarian options available. Phone orders welcome although may not be accepted during exceptionally busy times.

Take away Dinner

Wow for a hole in the wall take away get there early the fish is so fresh you can still smell the ocean spray & the size's are to kill for. Got recommended by the place we stayed at. Normal rule is to ignore that. But in this case it's a 11/10 yes yes

Great fish & chips

We came here to pick up dinner on a Monday night and to our surprise there was an extremely long queue! We soon found out why! The menu is extremely simple - but the food was delicious. Our fish and calamari were crumbed and cooked to perfection and the salad was lovely. It was presented beautifully (considering that it's in a takeaway container), the portions were generous and it was very reasonably priced! No wonder it's so popular!!

Best fish and chips ever

This has to be the best fish and chips I have had in years! Everything was Fresh and light, the fish meal for two was the best I’ve ever had with amazing fish, calamari, seafood sticks and even sea scallops and for only $33! It had my whole family commenting with every bite about how incredible it was. My partner had the bloke burger as well which he raved about. This is a hidden gem that I fear has ruined fish and chips anywhere else for me 🤣. Amazing work Fishpen!

Bitterly disappointed

We will not be caught a second time, so disappointing. The so called grilled fish was more like steamed and running in liquid. I love my chips but they were left uneaten so overcooked dry and hard. Vegetarian dim sims were nearly completely black and the scallops so tiny it was like a ball of batter. Pickup up your game for the price you charge it’s not good enough.

The fishpen is fine usually but the meal I got today was shocking. Maybe it's the fact that they are pumping out food for the tourists... I don't know but my usual order of grilled fish which costs more than battered was awful I thought about taking back the water soaked alfoil parcel that would normally have a nice piece of fish that had actually touched a grill but decided that would probably end badly so just threw it away. If the owner is reading this... What happened, it was a obviously just siting in some sort of container of what temperature who knows. Fix this please or I doubt the increased short term business will keep you afloat.

My first port of call in all my town visits is a fish/ chip shop, especially by the sea. Happy to say after 65 years of travelling/ tasting the Fishpen Takeaway was the very best that I have ever had. Dined on the river bank with my Seafood Basket for 2 with some very disappointed upset seagulls missing out. That good I had to go back the next day. Lovely light batter, great flavours and excellent value for money - I will return. Graham

Well-cooked seafood - reasonably priced

Ordered battered & crumbed fish from here on several nights during a recent visit to Merimbula. I think the fish was Blue Grenadier(?) - moist & well cooked. Very thin batter. Chips & potato scallops (Victorians call them potato-cakes I think?) also very nice. Well done! Only criticism I would have is the early close on a weeknight - I attempted to place an order at around 7pm & was informed that the kitchen had ceased taking orders. Not all of us grey nomads eat dinner at 5pm!

Fresh and fast

This small takeaway was highly recommended to us so we thought why not give it a go. We arrived to a line of Covid safe people waiting for their orders to be done. Usually a good sign to see so many waiting. We chose fish and chips and they were delivered quickly and were fairly large size - two fillets of fish each and lots of chips. The fish was fresh and fried nicely. A little creasy but crisp batter with the fish itself lovely. The chips were great - nicely crisp and piping hot. Enjoyed sitting in the nearby park behind the beach.

Best seafood

Today I had to search throughout the town for a fish and chip place who could accommodate our needs. Having a child with seafood allergies is hard when the rest of us L O V E fish. Fishpen was able to accommodate this need. Cooking and wrapping the seafood seperately. The flake was fresh melt in your mouth kind of meat. I would highly recommend this little shop on the flats in Merimbula.

Super Lunch

Parked in Merimbula, could not find a Fish and Chip shop. Looked on my phone and Fishpen showed up. Off we went and now know where we will be going in future. A queue and 15min wait but well worth it. The fish (Blue Grenadier) was lovely, crisp batter well cooked and also the chips. We did not realise what we were missing, and live only 60ks away.

Excellent takeaway - twice

Had battered grenadier, crumbed flathead, chips, calamari and sea scallops. All delicious, beautifully cooked, crisp. Even the chips. Wonderful customer service. Good value. Tip - half serve of chips is plenty for 2 people and it's great to see this place offer fish on it's own without chips. 1 serve of chips is more than enough for 3 people.

Didn’t live up to expectations….

So disappointed with our food last night, especially given the rave this place receives from locals. Our ‘grilled’ blue grenadier was small, tasteless and came wrapped in foil swimming in the liquid it had obviously been cooked in. The chips were the brightest yellow I’ve seen, not sure what is added to them but it wasn’t the chicken salt we requested! They were soggy and probably half the quantity we are used to for a minimum order. Just couldn’t recommend.

Great fish and chips

We are always on the lookout for good fish and chips and Fishpen Takeaway did not disappoint. We had fish and chips, calamari and potato scallops, and all were delicious. Perfectly cooked and crispy batter. Worth the visit if you are in Merimbula.

Awful service

Claims to open at 11am, got there and they closed the door and said “you will have to come back in 10 mins as we aren’t actually open and we are getting lots of orders” (this was at 11am). Opened the doors at 11.05 and almost seemed irritated to have customers. Really disappointed considering we always come to this fish and chips a shop and it’s great fish and chips!

Despite the signs at the front and the take away menu stating they are open until 7.30pm we walked around at 7.10 to find the door locked. Really surprising given it’s a long weekend and middle of school holidays. Perhaps they should update their hours!
