A trip to Thompsons General Store can be a daily ride. They have a great take away section from 11.30am to 2pm and the best burgers on the island. They stock souvenirs, cold drinks, fresh bread daily, food items, fishing gear, hardware items, clothes, a small selection of alcohol. They are closed on Tuesdays at present.

We loved going to Thompson’s General Store during our stay. Staff were always happy helpful and friendly. Damo is great - happy, friendly, enjoys interacting with customers and cooks a great lunchtime burger. Damo went out of his way to try to help us find extra nights accommodation when we were recently stuck on the island due to flooding on the mainland. We were extremely thankful for his help and advice. Burgers we ate here were delicious! Loved them and would highly recommend! General store has a wide variety of food, drinks and gift items. Make sure you visit when on the island. Thanks, Damo!! Woody and Kerry.

Sign out the front says best burgers for 750kms. I’d argue a wider range than that. Old style burger place, just the basics, no fancy burger engineering like all the hipster burger places on the mainland.
Reminds me of Andrews Burgers in Albert Park
Only open between 1130 and 2pm so get in for lunch when the sun is at its hottest

Because everything has to come to Lord Howe on a weekly boat delivery - shipping costs make things expensive. The people are delightful and they seek to cater to what a holidayer would need (lots of souvenirs plus fishing kit etc as well as basic groceries and the like). But necessarily range is limited and prices have to reflect costs to get things to the island - so, for example, a 1.25ltr bottle of Coke which in the mainland might cost $2.50, here costs over $5. Just be ready for the prices and bring what you can from home.

So nice to have a chat about what type of burger to buy with the staff. The store also had a mixture of take away food, souvenirs & basic groceries. On Lord Howe, everyone is friendly, Thompsons is that in spades. It's a must stop on LHI.

We had amazing burgers at Thompson’s General Store. I had the Vegetarian burger with spinach and feta, my hubby had the Gowa burger, both were large and very tasty. Well priced too. The store is also well stocked with general supplies. The staff are friendly and helpful.

Best Fish Burgers, great place for lunch.
Good selection of reasonably priced groceries and souvenirs.
The very friendly staff went out of their way to help, as they had a shark motif T-shirt I wanted, but not in my size. I paid for the shirt and postage, and when they re-stocked, they posted it to me.

This is best places to eat a casual lunch in Lord Howe Island. We were there for 10 days and had lunch there four times. The hamburgers are great and great value. Its also a general store with food and clothing. Very friendly customer service. Great place to shop on Lord Howe Island.

Besides the shop with essentials, souvenirs and groceries, the best thing is of course the burger counter at lunchtime. The best burgers on LHI with various options. Plus an island beer from the fridge. Awesome!
It's worth comparing the prices in the shops. I saw the gin much cheaper in Thompson's than in Joy's, for example.

Thompson has great vegetarian burgers and a pleasant place to sit outside and eat your meal. The store has a great selection of gifts, souvenirs and clothes. There are also grocery items - including fruit and vegetables. There are also ice creams at reasonable prices. Wandering around the store is a very pleasant way to spend time on the island.

We dropped into Thompson’s for their delicious burgers. My hubby really enjoyed the Gower burger. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We also hired a car from them for one day which was good fun.
The store sells everything from clothes, wine, beer, soft drinks & food items. We noticed they had a good selection of wines available.

We popped in here for a quick lunch of burgers and a salad roll. Both were quite tasty with some delicious hot chips to boot. The service was friendly and welcoming which is what you want in a small place like Lord Howe.

General small goods, alcohol, souvenirs, T shirts fashion clothing, fishing gear and lunchtime take away. Burgers were delicious, can sit at tables under the trees outside.
