This is our last day in the region and thought we would finish up with lunch at this hotel. We sat out on the very pleasant back deck with a drink until 12.00 noon when we could order our meals. We both chose to have the rump steak and ordered it medium rare with garlic sauce. While the steak was tasty it was not cooked to how we wanted it and the garlic sauce was far too runny. Having said all that the taste of the steak was pretty good, it had obviously been par cooked and then thrown onto the charcoal grill to finish off. the chips were good and the salad was no better than expected. The service was quite good and we thought the price for the steak was equal to what we received.

We had a delicious pub meal here - small pizza & a chicken parmigiana - prompt, friendly service with a smile. All the meals coming from the kitchen also looked very good, and was well patroned by locals and visitors alike on a week day evening. Will definitely be back next time we are in town.

We stopped for lunch here recently and had a wonderful experience. The pub is a beautiful venue with a lovely rear deck to capture a summer breeze. The food was delicious and great value for money with sizeable portions. The atmosphere had a friendly family feel

Really lovely meals & we didn’t have to wait too long. My husband had the Parma & I had grilled chicken with avocado & garlic sauce. Both meals were amazing! We were traveling through & stopped for lunch & appreciated the quick service. Toilets were very clean also.

When you are travelling its hard to beat a country pub meal and this hotel supports the argument. Good variety on the menu with all the pub favorites. It was a Friday night and the bistro was busy with both locals (a good sign) and travelers. The service was good and despite the number of diners the meals came freshly prepared and in a reasonable time. Just be alerted to when they are busy the pizza's take a little longer due to the oven capacity.

Ordered 2 pizzas & fish n chips for $51. Hard to get a table for 3 at 6pm & all tables covered in half eaten food & dirty dishes from 1-2 sittings before we arrived. Pizzas ok but fish was seriously overcooked in what tasted like burnt oil and was inedible. Chips were cold with a limp side salad. Clearly no quality control on what went out. Very disappointing given the past reviews.

All I wanted was a cheap bed for the night after a long day driving. At the Criterion, I got that and so much more. It was the cheapest place I found. My room was basic, but very clean and the bed was so comfortable. The amenities are shared, but the room had a washbasin. It also had aircon and a tv. There are a number of hotels in town but this seems to be the choice of the locals, judging by the crowd. It has an extensive menu, is reasonably priced and the meals are generous as well as being reasonably priced. I ordered pizza, which I can recommend. Drinks are also well priced and the beer was ice cold. As a bonus, there was a guitarist playing and singing and he was just brilliant, the best I've heard in a long time, with an eclectic repertoire. While there is a little noise from the bar and entertainment area, it finished around 10.30pm. Gundagai is a lovely little town and just off the Hume Highway, with no traffic noise. I can recommend Gundagai and the Criterion Hotel as an overnight stop for those travelling between Sydney and Melbourne.

What a find. We had lunch out on the decking which was great on a lovely warm day. All 4 in our party found the menu choices and specials offered a good variety of choices. The choices we made were excellent and all enjoyed what they ordered. The Beef Thai salad is the best I have every had. Prices are very reasonable from $20 to just over $30. Even though they were very busy the service was excellent. They don't take bookings except for parties of 10 or more, so getting there early allows youa choice of where to sit, All four of us have said we would definately be back.

A great stop over option down the Hume highway, stayed a few times before, basic accommodation but very well priced and comfortable. Staff very friendly and helpful during the stay, had the usual chicken parma for dinner, which is a great choice off the menu. Will always stay there whenever travelling the Hume. Highly recommended.

We called in on the recommendation of the motel we stayed at up the road. We both had the lamb cutlets and they were the best we have had for a long time. Two cutlets for $20 with $5 for additional cutlets which we thought was great value. You can have them with chips or salad, or vegetables and mash potato. You also get the choice of 4 gravys. We will return again.

Typical country pub fare. Nothing special on the menu, I had a Parma, nice fresh vegetables with mash huge Parma took up 3/4 of the plate; partner had lamb cutlets with vegetables and mash, said the cutlets were oily perhaps deep fried? Very generous serves. Only other comment is the Bistro was not cosy in fact it felt like a cafeteria with bright lighting.

Travelling through so booked a room to stay the night. Very comfortable for pub accommodation; I was the right temperature all night, on a comfy bed with clean, nice linen; checking in and out wasn't an issue. Ate downstairs (Wednesday night, pizzas only) - which was a very good pizza, and enjoyed a couple of drinks; the sunset off the rear deck was spectacular. I'd prefer a wider selection of beers, but that's common for a beer snob from the city like me, I think :-) Would heartily recommend the Criterion for drinks, food and accommodation.

Great watering hole for a leisurely beer. very social and friendly atmosphere. We called in on our way to Tumbarumba and our party of 10 all had a meal. The food was outstanding and served in a timely manner considering the pub was packed for lunch. Highlight- five of us had the crumbed lamb cutlets and I would highly recommend this to everyone as it was one of the best I have had. Panco crumbed as well!! I had four cutlets!!

We were just staying in Gundagai for the night and came across this lovley pub. Meals were just amazing and cooked as requested (all steak) staff were very friendly and happy to answer any questions. We also loved all the old murals on the wall and learning a little bit about the towns history. We will be back next time we are travelling by.

Read TA reviews, and decided upon this lovely country town for lunch, and this pub, in particular. The publican let us pick where we wanted to sit - he was very polite and engaging. We got menus, and though it is claimed to have pizza, and they do, but not for lunch! So we decided on a schnitzel burger, bangers and mash and the salt and pepper squid. All was good, but that’s it…what puzzled me is that they only had Yellow Tail Red Wines…I’ve never seen this before in an Aussie pub. Anyhow, it was tasty, and we left content…can’t say much more than that. The place is spotless and well located.
