This is a very busy restaurant so bookings are recommended. On the evening that our party of 14 dined the table service was slick. All the waiting staff were terrific and responded to questions with excellent professionalism. In particular they went out of their way to ensure that those dining with food allergies were catered for appropriately. The food service was quick and everyone enjoyed their meals. Table water and drinks were served quickly too. The whole experience was terrific and the moody atmosphere of the newer location created a lovely dining experience. I recommend the gluten free pizza which was the best I have eaten. In our party there were no complaints about any of the food. We all had a great night.

Having written off the Italian food recommendations from the “Lonely Planet”: too snobby / private party we went to the Trip Advisor numero uno: La Scala. We were glad we did. It’s entrance may resemble that of a speakeasy, unadorned door, down a side alley and it actually it gives off the vibe of a hidden party venue. Kitchen staff coming out to greet regular customers. Not what you get in our home town! We had booked for an early Saturday evening table and although tables around us were being relaid for later diners, there was no rushing us out. We had garlic and chilli prawns in oil to share as a starter. The quantity of fried garlic in the bottom of the bowl was amazing: and we mopped up every last bit with the herb pizza we got. This pizza bread wasn’t even on the menu but made for us because we asked. The bread that came as standard was also lovely though. We ordered the chicken & mushroom risotto and a beef ravioli in cheese sauce as the mains: small portions both. We finished them as take-always tonight! Having saved space for a tiramisu between us we just about licked the plate clean. A word about the wines: always trust the house wines in an Italian restaurant and you won’t go wrong. Both the wineries from the “house” section were great - hey you are in a 60% Italian background population wine region and at less than $30 a bottle there was no benefit in looking at the vanity blackboard wine list. One thing that I wondered about was that when I looked on my phone, there wasn’t a single review since 2019. Now I’m typing this there’s loads of current ones. We met farmers from an outlying area, they come 3 1/2 hours to do their monthly shop and visit. That may be extreme but it’s obvious that all the locals know where to get their fill of good unpretentious Italian food. I look forward to passing through Griffith for a little longer next time and to also visit one of their local “house wine” producers: Calabria. P.S. All the service staff were friendly and efficient.

We were a little confused on arrival, we entered through the bistro and were quickly directed to the “restaurant” both bistro and restaurant were sparsely populated at 6pm, by 7pm the place was packed - probably a good idea to book. The restaurant was noisy, it was a good idea to have the food and wine specials written on large blackboards so that staff did not have to recite them. Staff were friendly and efficient - essential in such a large busy restaurant. We shared oysters Kilpatrick for an entree and lamb chops and fillet steak for mains. The servings were generous, my wife would have rated the lamb chops 6 stars if she had the choice, the lamb was cooked perfectly as was the polenta cake, sauce and vegetables. My fillet steak came as four portions in quite a heavy red wine and tomato reduction. I enjoyed my meal but as other reviewers have noted the sauce was a bit overpowering. A matter of personal choice. We drank o Little William Montepulciano from Victoria, a good match for the food and reasonably priced at $39. A good selection of local wines are available. We enjoyed our night and would be happy to return.

The food was nice, not exceptional. The service from our dedicated service person can be described as attentive. However, we had wrong meals placed on our tables not once but three times. This aspect is concerning. Particularly as such events illuminate the portent of who else has played with the food that arrived at your table. We noted the table next to us had similar experiences. Moreover, when one of our party questioned the service person the issues was explained away as this was your perception and the restaurant was busy? Considering the above, there are many Italian restaurants in Griffith and while the decor is quite new you will be better served and your wallet it as light at one of the other offerings in Griffith providing traditional Italian cuisine. My rating a bare 5 out of 10.

Attended last night with my partner and family. First time we have been since they changed location and wow, does the new location look amazing. But unfortunately, we were sort of seated in a corner of the restaurant and after been seated, we had to flag someone down 20 minutes later and ask if we could order a drink. The entrees were lovely. I had the Gamberone La Scala and it was the bomb. I then had the black Angus steak and it was also great. My other family members had the squid ink pasta, a pizza and the gnocchi Gorgonzola and everyone was extremely thrilled. We then asked for a menu back as we wanted to order some desert. 20 minutes later, not one server came near us so we just got up and left.

After our last trip to the area we were advised that we must go to La Scala. We have been travelling for over 3 weeks and had organised that we celebrate my husbands 60th there. All of us were looking forward to veal only to be told after we had been seated that they did not have any as they could not get it, blaming the recent floods for the lack of supply, but we’re able to substitute for fillet steak…. Having just come from the Barossa where we all had purchased packs of veal at the local farmers market, to say we were disappointed is an understatement. The final selection (pasta’s) was fine. As the place was busy the waitress seemed to be in a rush, we had to ask her to repeat what she was saying as it was so fast and seemed like a rehearsed script. Our experience at the other top restaurant was a far more pleasant experience.

Would not recommend. Visited on a busy Friday night. First course small plate calimari would have been better at any fish and chip shop. Tough and covered in batter. Main course came before we'd finished. I had to hold these cold plates while the table was cleared. My marinated lamb cutlets were very tough. I eventually got a supposedly sharp knife so I could tear them apart, only to find all were unchewable. The sauce was burnt. Wait staff didn't care and didn't respond.

Fabulous traditional Italian Resturant with food to match. You can taste that the food is made with love delicious flavours across the entire menu. A must visit place when in Griffith and you will need to book.

This delightful Italian restaurant has well established itself as the #1 place in Griffith to eat. You leave the restaurant having felt you’ve made new friends and we can’t praise Renee’ enough for her level of service, knowledge of menu and wine suggestions - all absolutely spot on! Tucked away in a little corridor off the Main Street, do not be put off by the outside. Menu is extensive, servings half or full on many items and all priced well. We will definitely come back if in the area again! Suitable for all age groups - everyone becomes part of the La Scala Family!

What a great restaurant! There must have been over 100 people here tonight and we could not fault it. Food excellent. Service excellent. Prices reasonable. Importantly the food came hot to the table especially when you consider how busy it was. This place is so well run like a machine. Griffith should be very proud of this restaurant. We had a special night. Thanks La Scala!

This food and service was number 2 on my all time restaurant experiences. I know La Scala had good rating but I did not expect the experience we had. Every thing was excellent but leave room for desert. The Panna Coota was so good and I did not feel like I had eaten a block of butter afterwards.

The restaurant has a more formal area plus a casual side so we chose the latter when booking. From the moment we arrived, we knew it was going to be a good night. Our first waiter steered us to a delicious local Durif (3 Bridges) and whilst the place was quiet to start with the delightful waitress discussed options with us and a little of the history of this amazing "hole in the wall". Our shared zucchini flowers were just delicious for starters, then we both had pasta mains - squid ink spaghetti with prawns, cherry tomatoes & chilli and tortellini boscaiola the other choice. 'Wow!' The desserts all were tempting but the pasta servings were so generous, we settled on a shared dish of homemade gelato. Yum!!! This restaurant was exactly what we wanted it to be and we would return in a flash - maybe the more formal area next time (same menu and prices). Thank you La Scala for making our last night away so memorable!

I was a bit cautious after reading some of the reviews, but decided to give it a go. I'm so glad that I did as my family and I loved our meals, which were cooked with care, proudly served and jam packed with flavour. I couldn't ask for more and I wonder about the sub standard reviews. The scallops with burnt butter, sage and capers. Delicate and soft prawns swimming in olive oil and garlic, soft and light gnocchi, squid ink pasta with prawns and cherry tomatoes, chocolate mousse cake, passion fruit tart. Can you tell my family and I loved it?

A friend who goes to Griffith often recommended this restaurant and booked a table for us. The setting was lovely. My husband ordered the Penne Arrabiata and I the ravioli boscaiola. My husband said his dish was OK but not the best he's eaten and I was disappointed with the boscaiola. It was in a creamy RED sauce!!! When the waitress was removing our dishes I mentioned that I had only ever had a white boscaiola and her reply? "It's ALWAYS a red sauce". I said in all the other italian restaurants I've eaten in it's always been a white sauce. She just shrug and walked away. Guess I upset her cause I saw her talking to a man behind the counter and she never came back near our table. She took bills to other tables but after sitting there for 15 mins we finally walked up to the counter to get our bill and pay. NOT impressed. I had a look again at their menu and sure enough it said boscaiola in a creamy red sauce but I hadn't red that. Never entered my head that it wouldn't be white. My error I guess.

Dinner at La Scala is an essential Griffith experience. This subterranean restaurant feels like a a classic hidden gem, but is actually the most famous restaurant in town. The ambience is always great, making it a favourite for family celebrations and work get togethers alike. Definitely the no.1 place for visitors to Griffith. The extensive menu never seems to change, but it has stood the test of time and has something for everyone; there is also a blackboard to tempt with seasonal specials which is refreshed regularly. All the food is well presented and delicious. The servings are very generous so I recommend sharing a couple of starters between a group. The toppa and calamari are my top picks here. The staff are all knowledgeable and welcoming, and always handy when you need something ( another drink from the well stocked bar, perhaps?). The prices may be a little on the high side, but considering the reliable quality, service and ambience, it’s well worth a splurge.
