Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was a long time must fave but unfortunately the chefs have changed and the owners are focused on a new venture in Melbourne so the quality of food has deteriorated quite badly. The wonderful authentic Malaysian food is no longer and the watery diluted...sauces and dishes are just not that good. There are no longer crowds or queues waiting to be seated - and for good reason. This no longer is worth the wait and everyone has moved on. After tonight's sad offerings we are also moving on.More

Dont want to be mean but the food was terrible. We had a prawn laksa and chicken curry. As a chef I really want to say that serving food as bad as it was is unrespectful and tells that there are some huge problems in...this restaurant.More

We saw the sign, autgentic malaysian food, got excited for a good genuine feed but were let down. We think the food was off, the kids still ate it who knows if they end up getting food sick. We didnt eat our plates. Expensive food...too. We ended up leaving our plates there and eating subway on the walk back to the car. Very very dissapointing. As we were paying, I couldnt get the courage to tell them how dissapointed we were however I was listening in on other tables dining there and they had the exact same concerns and comments as we did. If my kids get sick from this meal i will all the food authority for sure.More

If you like tasteful food, don't go here. It's bad and still quite expensive. The food is poorly made and I would definitely cook better home.

The sign advertises ‘Authentic Malaysian Food’, and our experience questions if Authentic meant just plain bad food! My partner and I saw this tucked away restaurant on our Xmas trip to Byron Bay and decided to give it a try. On the plus side, they...were one of the few restaurants that were open on xmas day and they have BYO. But thats where the plus ends. Severely understaffed, with up to or more than an hour of wait for food to arrive, for all customers, and one of the more iconic malay dishes, roti canai, or anything roti related were not available when we wanted to order. We ordered two chicken mee goreng, and when they finally arrived, they WERE TWO OF THE WORST DISHES WE HAVE EVER TASTED. Appreciating that a dish can vary between cooks and the region when the restaurant is, I am close to 100% those dishes didnt even follow the basic recipe of a mee goreng. They had a terrible raw fishy smell to them, and although I am a fish lover, I couldnt stand it! Could also say that it didnt follow the basic rules of making just noodles as well. Really horrible food and to top it off, the patrons who came after us were being served before us (when we were well into the waiting game of 30+mins to order amd receive) and they were being served roti dishes (when we were told no rotis). I also had an upset stomach afterwards which is probably why I am writing this :( However, the owner or the lady at the cash register and the single wait staff (perhaps a young backpacker looking to make some money through hard work) were polite (frazzled but polite). When it was time to pay, I politely refused to pay for the BYO since that was the only thing we enjoyed and the plate of food were mostly untouched. She agreed. Would highly recommend travellers to avoid this place on public holidays, and probably find something else to eat because this restaurant serves anything but authentic or malay food! Ps: we are very familiar with malay food having lived in Malaysia and travelled there quite a lot.More

We walked past this place one night and decided to go in the next night as the smell was fabulous. I had the beef rendang and my friend had the barramundi curry, so tasty especially with the roti. Definite recommendation and definite return

Lovely food! If you like roti you will love it for sure! Me and my partner were in Byron for a couple of nights and we were unsure where to eat. From the out side the restaurant had a good vibe and we decided to...give it a try! Is very likely that when you don’t know where to eat you pick the wrong one! Not in this case! Nice food! Roti and curries were very tasty!More

Food is tasty and run by Malaysian people always a good start if Melaka is in the name as the town itself is known for good food. Tried the lamb curry with roti which curiously came out first then the vegetables curry and rice second....Could’ve been a bit hotter and better organised but definitely worth another visit. Go early as they get very busy on weekend nights with lots of foot traffic. Well priced for a Byron restaurant. Two curries, rice and rotis under $50. It’s BYO.More

The food here is different to the normal Malaysian fair, with unusual flavours that the party wasn't expecting. However, the dishes were generally underwhelming, particularly the dosa that was ordered. Although presentation was interesting, the actual flavour was plain and boring. And dishes came out...staggered, with long waits between service. The roti that was ordered came out after we had finished most of the other dishes as well, but this was not charged to us. The service was average, and staff seemed to be confused half the time. Overall an underwhelming experience.More

Lots of reviews of this place talk about the flavours not being true to Malaysia or Indonesia, India or wherever. Who cares? In this modern era of fusion the flavours can be a mish mash or 'best of' any/all cultures. The food here is tasty...and the flavours authentic enough for me and to quote the old song......"I've been everywhere man!"More

The dishes were extremely tasty and it was incredible so much amazing food coming from such a small space. The service was great. I'd highly recommend Taste of Melaka to anyone visiting Byron Bay.
