Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Travelling north from a stay in Nelsons Bay we decided on an early start and a stop at Bulahdelah for breakfast.
If you think it's impossible to make 2 poached eggs, toast, hashbrown, tomato and zucchini look pretty and appetising on a plate then stop at Detours in Bulahdelah for breakfast and you will see how it's done.
Partner ordered the sausages and like me there was barely a crumb left on the plate. We saw the big breakfast served at a table nearby and it was big.
Plenty of choice at very reasonable prices, friendly staff and generous servings make Detours a cafe to remember on your travels.

Food for your Eyes, Soul & belly!
Worth turning off the highway into Bulahdelah. The service was friendly & served quickly. The glass display case looks delicious but the surprise is the plates are presented as you would expect in a high end cafe for twice the price. Flavour & freshness match the presentation. Great coffee as well. Definitely calling in on the way back to Newcastle

Stopped for lunch spicy lamb wrap was excellent value and the taste was delicious. Purchased steak pies to take with us .best pie we have ever tasted full of meat in a delicious gravy. Would highly recommend this cafe to anyone.

Ordered two pies, which I thought were just going to be bagged up but the pies on display are cold im guessing as I had to wait for them. After waiting I got my order & I walked back to our car 30mts away and sat in car eating them.
Very disappointed $19.80 for two takeaway pies that had been imo reheated in the microwave as pastry was chewy and not crispy and it was luke warm on the outer sides ( at a push) and stone cold in the middle one pie was colder than the other. There was a fair amount of steak in the pie but a little on the tough side and being so cold it was not enjoyable .
Staff friendly but for a first visit it was a let down sorry.

The food was fabulous ! It really was . From the presentation down to the very last bite. The only downfall was that I didn't order more and it was time to move on. Whoever runs the kitchen is very passionate about food. That was evident by the way my simple wrap was presented (like a work of art) , the ingredients and the taste. Reall, really yum. Thank you 🙏🏾. Craving more 😋

TRAUMATIC. Children this young should not be left alone in a shop let alone be in charge of cooking. Made a choice on the menu was served up different to what I ordered. It also looked discussting with so much butter i thought it was cheese. I am vegetarian and it was cooked with the meat and smelt discusting. When I took it back they were unhelpful so I left with no refund to avoid conflict. The children behind the counter followed me out and said I have never heard anything so stupid as me not wanting so much butter. When I said I don't like it thick, the little girl said "shut up"

Stopped in late morning for something to eat, I had seen their pies on previous visits and always thought they looked good so decided to finally have one. So glad I did, it was incredibly yummy! I had a pepper steak, and the steak pieces were melt in your mouth, the pepper had the perfect amount of bite and the pastry was delicious.
They also provided tomato sauce with the pie (which it didn’t need because personally the pie itself was enough) but it’s a nice addition as most places charge for such things.
The one thing that kept this from being a 5 star was that they initially gave me the wrong flavour pie, I let them know and they apologised and changed it, but they weren’t overly busy.
Overall though not a huge deal and I would happily return, will try one of their other flavours next time.

Don't miss this spot for breakfast. I had the Country Style breakfast with a large Mocha coffee (total $29.50), and it was fantastic. Considering it was a busy morning, service was quick, and staff were pleasant. Breakfast consissted of two pieces of great toast on thick soft bread, bacon, hash browns, grilled tomatoes, lots of very nice mushrooms and two poached eggs.

We just stopped for a quick snack on the run. Coffee, a couple of chiko rolls & scallops. Then kept driving. I would have to say that the coffee & scallops were good but the chiko rolls would have to be the worst ever. Not sure how you can muck up a chiko roll but they were hard & dry as if they were about 3 days old. Or maybe over cooked, not sure what but they were terrible. Sorry to have to give this review but just saying how it was.

We visit Bulahdelah annually and we always call into Detours for a light meal Breakfast or lunch.
The Highlight though is their awesome Custard Tarts made on real milk, not Gelatine, and never boiled.
They also have wonderful Xmas cakes and the like around this time of year

We went to Detour Cafe for coffee. The staff were friendly and since we had been there last the cafe had had a really nice makeover.
The coffees were excellent and we also bought a Chicken Tenders and Salad Wrap for later which was excellent. Nice flavour and heaps of fresh salad.

a pleasant small cafe with delicious afood. Only grip is no toilet on site when travelling.
Gourmet pies are worth the stop, large and wholesome they are a meal in themselves.
Café offers a range of breakfast treats and light meals and coffee was good. Staff could learn to smile a little more.

A tidy little cafe, right on the main drag, it has a limited range of food but all of it well made, well presented and delicious. Good coffees with decade, lactose-free and a variety of milks as options. Still observing some Covid restrictions and making hand sanitiser available. Definitely an afternoon visit as winter mornings, the outside seating is a tad fresh. Inside table - only a handful - needed a good clean as the surface was sticky. Sat in many worse.

Often call into Detours driving up the coast from Sydney or coming back, perfect stop for the first break from Sydney..
Burgers are nice and tasty, old fashioned style and very filling, the range of pies are great and come served with a slice of buttered toast when you order them to eat in. Have often picked up a couple of pies for dinner on the drive back home, the lamb shank and also the duck pies are excellent. Partner reckons the coffee is good too.
Good old fashioned cafe which is the perfect place to stop to break up the drive from Sydney, does get very busy at times.

If you want to know what fish and chips was like 50 years ago then you must come here. Fresh battered fish cooked with flavour, it tasted like fish of my childhood. Served on a plate with faux newspaper, three lemon wedges and three tartare sauces, a load of hot chips took me back in time.
Old style cafe with laminated tables and not overly modern, it was like stepping back in time when a cafe was ..... We'll a cafe, not one of these modern hipster joints in the city. Apart from fish and chips, it has burgers that look like mini mountains. Can't believe the guy on the next table finished his whopper. My wife had the Caesar s a lad. It also has hot pies which looked amazing.
Highly recommended compared to the highway robbery merchants who sell junk.
