I have been to this cafe a few times over the years as I'm a local and even though the food is average and overpriced, I like the atmosphere. I have brought my laptop many times to work here and paid approximately $30 for say two coffees and breakfast while spending 1-2 hours at a table. This morning my laptop charge was low, so I asked to move inside where I could plug into an electrical socket, near an inside table. Owner: Well, as long as you're not going to be here all day - Me: No just wanted to work for an hour or so. Owner: Well (pause) I suppose (pause) Okay then. After this less than welcoming exchange, particularly after spending $29, I thought I'm just going to leave, and promptly forgot to pay. But then rushed back to do so when I realised. The whole experience made me feel very flat and bewildered. There should be a sign 'No Laptops'. In Berrima, there are many lovely cafes where the food is much better and not as expensive. So if you want to be in 2020 where people do sometimes work at cafes, then I recommend The General Store which has divine pastries or Gumnut Patisserie which has the best pies. PS: The waitress who was new with the braids you did a fantastic job, and this is no reflection on you.

When we sat down, received drinks menu with reasonable prices and asked if they had fruit toast. When we paid for our coffee and toast she said $30.90, I thought she mistook what we actually had, but after seeing this comments, I think thats how much they charge for fruit bread and two coffees. I was actually hoping to find a menu online to check price.

We had breakfast and lunch at the Magpie and we had extremely pleasant experiences. The cafe was very welcoming and crammed full of interesting things and quaint decor. The food was tasty and wholesome, and there looked to be lots of lovely baked things to chose from. Staff were helpful and there was a steady stream of people coming in to buy baked items and take away coffees.

I was very nervous about having lunch here after reading a lot of terrible reviews, but you need to give this place a chance. I rang the cafe to make a booking as our party was coming from different locations and they don’t normally accept bookings, but relented for us as we were having special farewell lunch. The manager kindly advised they were unlicensed, but allowed BYO, so we brought a bottle of rosé along. The waitstaff were almost thrilled when we produced it on the day and didn’t charge us corkage as they said it was lovely to see us enjoying our lunch together. It is run by genuine locals and I witnessed numerous entitled tourists who were pretty rude and dismissive and the staff remained polite and passive. Granted the menu is pricey ($17-$33 meals) and there is an odd instruction that you’re not allowed to share meals otherwise they whack a surcharge on your bill, however, our meals were exceptional and worth every penny. The cafe has an interesting collection of local artisan products, smoked salt, passion fruit butter, jam, chutney etc and other gifts dotted around the place and vintage table settings, cutlery, silver jugs etc. The selection of beautiful homemade cakes and pastries is huge and while we didn’t have dessert this time I have had coffee and cake takeaway before and have not been disappointed. Perhaps there are exceptions to people’s experience, but ours was great with no complaints. Please give this place a chance.

Today may have been an off day for the ‘barista’ but my Almond milk flat white was too hot, plus no crema just bubbles on top. Nevertheless, very pleasant waitress. The carrot cake was nice, but the most expensive piece of cake I’ve ever bought in a cafe, $12. Coffee and cake was $18.45. Just a normal slice, not big nice icing and a dob, small, of cream. Not a place I’d return to, but if you’ve money to throw away, a place with good parking.

On a trip to Berrima, we were very curious walking by this cafe because it was different and inviting. There was a lady feeding a Magpie on a beautifully set table, white tablecloth and delightful decorations at the entrance. We ordered coffees and a French cake to share, both delicious in a gorgeous garden setting adorned by blooming Wisterias, you could be in Nice somewhere. Staff were so friendly and ready to chat, very welcoming. This was such an amazing experience we returned the following day.

In terms of management the food is overly priced and does not taste very good. Staff are extremely ill mannered. Furthermore, cleanliness is appalling, hair was found in my cake and employees lacked basic hygiene practices such as hand washing and using gloves to handle food. Overall, would not recommend you waste your time at this hole

Met a group of friends here for morning tea, so it was cakes and lots of sweet things. Tea was served made with leaf tea, such a change from tea bags. Very pleasant atmosphere with interesting things to view. Will return .

Wish we had Read some of these reviews before calling in !! We were caught out with a similar experience today with outrageous prices and poor service. On arrival the waitress could not tell us the price of any cakes and we should have woken up then that this was not good. We ordered 3 lemon roulades with 2 teas . The roulades arrived but without tea! We waited over 30 minutes and never received the tea… ! After cancelling the tea order …. which had been sitting waiting on the counter forgotten , I nearly died of shock when we were charged $13 each for our small serving of cake ! This experience ruined our day as it is disappointing that customers can be treated in this manner .

Paid $12 for two small take away coffees. What a joke. Threw mine in bin after 2 sips. They use cheap almond breeze milk and it was disgusting. You are far better going to one of the other cafes across the street

I’m rating this cafe 2 stars for my coffee experience. I got quite the shock at the exorbitant cost of their one size only (regular) takeaway cup = $6! Prices weren’t advertised, so I felt slightly awkward having already ordered at the counter and with the EFT machine placed in front of me. I know a dollar or two extra isn’t a big deal, but for the size, it wasn’t worth it. I’m sure if I wanted different milk with an extra shot, the price would’ve come to $7+. I’m a big coffee drinker ~ this one tasted awful so it’s not a cafe I’ll be returning to for those couple of reasons. On a positive note, the cafe looks inviting from the outside and blends well into the small historic town. The lady who served me was friendly too.

We did a detour on our way home to have brunch at Berrima. We thought we go to the magpie cafe. We shared a serve of poached eggs and orange juice. We also bought 2 cakes as a takeaway. It wasn’t until we were already on the road I checked the receipt and thought it seemed excessive. I rang and queried it and yes it was correct. $2.50 surcharge for sharing and around $18 for 2 cakes too expensive.

This cafe is well frequented. It has good parking available out front but with the Berrima tourist crowd finding a spot to stop can be a challenge. The coffee is very good, the food is worth having with decent portions supplied. Service can be a little slow due to the popularity of Magpie so a little patience is a virtue.

This is our routine breakfast stop after leaving Canberra and we look forward to it. There is a fabulous ambience even when the village is “over touristed” and you can choose to sit inside, outside or on the verandah. The Eggs Benedict is the best we’ve had anywhere, a combination of top quality ingredients and culinary skill. I can’t comment on other choices as for us it’s always breakfast and always Eggs Benedict. Coffee is also great. The cake display looks fantastic. Breakfast prices are at market level, unsure of cakes etc. The staff are very pleasant and welcoming and look after you extremely well. A visit here is a treat not to be missed.

Magpie Cafe Berrima has always been an expensive treat stop when in the area but our previous visit will be the last. $48 for a cup of tea, a mug of coffee and scones for two is just daylight robbery. No menus were offered to us and no prices were displayed. The bunches of fresh flowers suggest a warm welcome in a convenient location but the unfriendliness of the lady who appears to be in charge and overpricing far out weighs what could be a lovely experience. We will not be back. What a shame!
