Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Well, I warned you. Magpie's grande dame has died, and the cafe will be sold. Meanwhile, her effects are being auctioned off. I've always been grateful for Magpie, and hence given it 5 stars. We've been coming here for years; we always stop in when...heading to Sydney, partly because Magpie was open all day for lunch which was great for travellers -- but not any more. The linen napery has gone too (oh, ok, the table cloth is still linen but covered with a paper sheet), and the napkins are paper. Sorry, but I loved the gracious Victorian/Edwardian ambience and was prepared to pay for it. Now the food is not as good, and is terribly expensive. The soup was all out, and so was the chicken for our customary Caesar salad. Jan would have had a fit! Lord knows what will happen now but I miss her, and I'll miss Magpie -- just glad that we made the most of it, and will have happy memories of an institution and a legend. Vale Magpie.More

We ended up here accidentally excuse most other places in Berrima were closed between Xmas and NY. It’s a quaint, cottage style cafe with glass cabinets full of cakes, shortbreads, galantines etc. Beautifully made but not our thing so we were hesitant. But our hot...lunches (it was cold and raining) were delicious: homemade pot pies with accompanying vegetables (included) and/or sweet potato fries (to die for). The coffee was a bit weak, but my Sydney standards are high. If we were dessert types, I dare say we would have been happy with the huge choice. Staff were really friendly, if a little frazzled and disorganised as it was crazy busy, so we forgave them that. Prices a little high but the portions were decent.More

The highlights were the excellent food and the calm atmosphere. I had pasta followed by a perfect piece of roulade (cake) and coffee. The chef is to be complimented. Attractive traditional furniture and adequate space. Service good. No thumping music. An enjoyable, civilised lunch. I...recommend it highly.More

We're normally very chilled people who go with the flow. Both of our coffees were scalding, My husband ordered a dirty chai and it had very little flavour. Most definitely the worst coffees we've ever had. We also ordered a vanilla slice and a gf...slice of cake. They were delicious! When we went to pay the bill, we were astounded to find out that the coffees, if I can call them that, were almost $9 each! Then the sweets were $12 and $15,50! For a cafe that wasn't that flash, I never in my wildest dreams could have thought we'd be charged these prices. If the coffee was decent, we wouldn't have minded so much, even though the sweets were so expensive. We definitely won't go back there again as there are so many options to choose from. Plus many of the other cafes had better ambience as we discovered when walking around. Inflation is here but that was crazy!More

Two regular coffees, one serving of tiny scones $28. Way overpriced. Scones so ineptly made they crumble as you try to pick them up. At least $10 over what you might expect to pay. Older woman serving unhelpful at best. Avoid. Total rip off. Coffees...very ordinary.More

I agree with previous comments regarding the price, didn't realize the damage until I saw the card transaction. we had two normal teas and a serving of scones and a piece of espresso cake which shouldn't cost anything more than $25 or $30 the most,...but I got hit with $50. Also agree with perfunctory service, the lady didn't pay too much attention to the customers and wasn't very helpful in explaining what they had on their menu. One thing we enjoyed was the quaint vibe the café offers which came at a price.More

Quaint English-style cafe with over-priced cakes and ordinary coffee. Prices are not displayed so be sure to ask before your order. The service is perfunctory at best. There are better cafes in Berrima than this.

Whilst this is a quant English style cafe it is outragously expensive charging $15.90 for a serving of scones with jam and cream! The service is not great. The elderly lady who served us was not exactly welcoming.

I have been here many times and have recommended it to my guests. After my last experience we will breakfast elsewhere. There are some wonderful staff members at the Cafe but the older lady (I think the owner) should concentrate more on her engagement with...customers. No one likes to be told that she is "taking orders for orange juice" when we asked if we could order coffees. Apparently that's not done. You must wait until she's ready to ask you. My sister and I ordered breakfast, I ordered the most expensive meal on the menu - not far off $30. I asked if I could have the eggs poached and if I could have hollandaise sauce with it. "Yes" was the answer but at $3 extra for less than an egg cup full! I do stress that there are some fantastic wait staff and an obviously talented chef. Just a shame the focus is not on value for money and great customer service.More

Whilst on a visit to Bowral for the tulip festival a friend recommended a visit to Magpie Cafe in Berrima for the duck pie. A group of four of us arrived there on a Friday a little past 11am while the breakfast service was still...on. We asked if we could have lunch and because the lunch specials were on the board on display we were told we could. We all ordered the duck pie and coffees. The pie was high and chock full of meat. It was beautifully served with a lovely salad that included preserved fruit. This was a restaurant quality meal, at a restaurant price and far exceeded anything I have ordered at a cafe. I also bought an individual serve, uncooked chicken and leek pie to take home. The pie cooked beautifully in the oven and was a real treat to have for dinner. The staff may be “quirky” (for want of a better description) but to me they were genuine and committed to serving beautifully presented and excellent food. When I am in the area again I will definitely go there again and perhaps order a piece of the lovely cakes on display. if you are concerned about cost and are ordering off menu then ask the price before ordering. I understand that they are extremely busy on weekends so week days would be the best time but you may need to check beforehand for their opening times.More

Called in for coffee and cake while traveling to northern beaches. Espresso cake-$15.95 a slice! I could make a complete cake for that, partner had Apple Crumble Cheesecake-$13.95 a slice! Interesting place but no prices shown, should have been a red flag, service of staff...cold. Won’t be back.More

I just love the Magpie cafe. And I have for a long time. My husband and I ring and book if travelling through. Beautiful home cooked goodies of every kind. I don’t mind too much if the service isn’t spot on.

- A huge rip off! - The attitude of old lady serving us, could not be any colder or demanding. Stopped over at Berrima for a quick brunch, and found parking at the front of Magpie Cafe. Rather than taking the time to scout out...other cafes, my family and I went straight into the Magpie expecting a simple, cheap and fast meal. However, pricing is exorbitant. As an example: $8.50 for a hot chocolate, and they charged an extra $2.50 (three times) because we shared three meals. Whilst I understand times are tough on small businesses, the pricing at Magpie Cafe is ridiculous. Furthermore, at least have the courtesy or professionalism to greet your customers with some warmth (since I'm paying a fortune). The old lady that served us, didn't even ask us where we would like to sit. Just simply, "you sit there". Needless to say, any attempt at small talk was looked upon with disdain. In summary, best avoid this cafe, unless you have money to burn and can put up with rude service.More
