This was the best meal I have ever eaten, and I have been all over the world. Fantastic food, wonderful service, the nicest staff.

We had dinner at the restaurant with my old parents and found the food to be impressive. Very delicious main courses and side dishes. Our waitress was the blonde girl whose name I forget. She had a genuine nice smile and was friendly to us...all. The 6pm locked door is a bit silly but thankfully they let us wait in the reception area because it was 11 degrees outside and we didnt want to have to walk back to the car and wait in there. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant and would return. I would like to see that smile again and enjoy the high standard of food on offer.More
Dining out is a combination of venue, ambiance, service and of course food and drink. This is our experience from a Friday dinner at Eschalot: Venue and Ambiance We were seated in a tired looking back room with a capacity for 14. There were only...2 other guests. Of note were a very stained floor rug, a gas fire with imitation logs and an ominous looking electric cable with plug hanging out the bottom, and the open entry to the toilets. Entertainment included the loud noise of a dryer every time someone washed their hands. Food and Drink My beer was poured as if it was mint tea, leaving 80% head and 20% liquid - barely drinkable. Our entrees were unattractive but acceptable. Then the problems really started. The lamb main was completely under cooked, well short of even rare. The accompanying carrots were warm but also raw. We ordered a seafood dish, commenting to the waitress that we chose it because it came with couscous. But there was only a spoonful of couscous, with a small piece of reef fish and unshelled prawns, in a broth. The only way to eat the prawns was by hand shelling, but there was no finger bowl so we gave up and just ate the fish. The side of brussel spouts was so burnt that we could not eat them. Service The wait staff did not put in an appearance in our room after the mains were served, so eventually we |went to get them. They seemed at a loss to respond to our issues, eventually removing the price of the lamb from our bill, but not the other problem dishes. There was no acceptance that anything was wrong. The customer is always right, except perhaps at Eschallot. Read their responses to some of the other uncomplimentary reviews.More
Dear future customers, We take our customer service very seriously. Our staff are required to write an 'incident report' if there is an issue. This customer's report is one and a half A4 pages. We'll leave it at that. Eschalot Management.
This was a very disappointing experience. After advising the restaurant at booking that this was a special celebration and that one person had recently been in hospital and was not 100%, we waited almost an hour for our first course and 1 1/2 hours for...the second, despite twice checking if things could be quickened up. We arrived second in our area of the restaurant, but were served last. Two of our party ordered a main of beef tartare. There was no clear mention of chilli with this dish on the menu, but when the dish came it was exceedingly spicy, to the extent they were both unable to eat it. Given the extended timing for the dish to be served in the first place and the fact it was made clear when booking the lunch that our sitting ended at 2pm, they did not feel comfortable returning it to the kitchen. It was 1.50pm when we finished our mains, so we did not order desserts or coffee as we didn’t want to be rushed to finish them. All in all a very disappointing 80th birthday celebration.More
Australians2, we appreciate feedback and strive to improve our customer experience. When complaints are valid, we go above and beyond to rectify the issue. This review, however, is completely false. Interestingly, when I investigated it, there were already notes in the managers section about your...More
Look good restaurants in regional Australia are hard to come by. Not just difficult to find good chefs but very challenging to attract local wait staff. A lot of places go the way of using overseas Visa holders who are paid low wages. Others stick...with local youngones but provide minimum training and on-the-job training. Experience here was not good when we arrived at 18:20 to find the place locked up. Doors did not open until 18:00 on the knocker regardless of a cold southern highlands evening. Sent a message of we don't care but we'll take your money. The food was fine. Large servings so be measured in what you order from the a la carte menu. As we were nearing the end of the main course the young waitress filled my glass with wine from another table's bottle. I pointed this out and had the glass quickly whipped away with an apology and told she would return with a glass of the correct wine. Some 10 minutes later the waitress returned to fill my partner's glass but no glass for me. I finally got a glass of the correct wine delivered and the bottle was left on the table not in the ice bucket. You can well imagine my complete surprise to find I had been charged for 2 bottles of wine on the bill. The waitress indicated that she would have to pay for her mistake.... If I had been asked if another bottle of the local wine charged at an exorbitant price I would have said no. I would have insisted that my glass be filled from another bottle and the hose then use this itself. Impressed? What do you think.More
The poor, simple, regional 'young one' that made an honest error, tried to fix it, tried to buy you a bottle of wine (that you refused to allow her to pay for and indicated all was fine) is now adequately devastated. Inconsolable and apologising to...More
The ’Feed Me” menu was amazing - they catered for a variety of dietary requirements. A mix of fish, meat, chicken and fresh vegetables - none of which were deep fried. I highly recommend this venue for those wanting a fine dining experience. We had...enough to take a little home to remind us of a lovely evening. This was our 4th visit.More
We made the mistake of arriving 15 minutes early for an 8.15pm sitting. We thought we might be able to sit at a table and enjoy a glass of wine while we waited for our appointed time slot. There were multiple tables ready because a...lot of people from the earlier sitting had finished and left. We were told this was not policy and were invited to wait with a dozen or so others perched on chairs and milling in the entry vestibule. Everyone would have been more comfortable sitting in one of the prepared tables even without “service”. This was all pretty weird. When we asked again whether we could sit at a table, the waitress got the cook who accused us of being early. He refused to seat us, saying that this would assume we would get service. When we said we would like to cancel our booking we were told this would cost $50 per head. The cook said he didn’t like our attitude and we were not welcome and he would not charge the booking fee. I think we dodged a bullet. Nobody looked happy in the cramped entry. I wonder whose attitude was the problem?More
On Saturday nights we have 2 seating times as outlined when making a booking with us. You arrived 30 minutes early and were invited to wait in front of the fireplace or return at 8:15 as that would be the earliest we could seat you...More
Arrived on time to a busy restaurant for our 2 hour window. We waited 45 minutes before being served and were told at the end of the meal there was no time to serve dessert and we had to leave. The other option was to...sit outside (6 degrees) to have dessert. Not worth the trip from Sydney.More
Fantastic food and service. Beautiful birthday dinner with friends. We had the chef's feed me menu... food was plentiful and of the highest quality. We were fortunate to have a private room for our party and our evening could not have been any better! I...can't recommend this place more. Thanks for a truly beautiful dinner 😊More
We enjoyed incredible food and wine experiences throughout the Southern Highlands, but our Chef’s Feed Me meal at Eschalot was one of the highlights! Generous servings, great value and incredible flavours. We would highly recommend!
Four of us visited two of us ordered the prawns and 2 had salmon, apparently the menu is meant to share plates, we didnt do that so we had very generous portions that day, it would have ordinarily have been too much but we just...simply couldn't stop, needless to say we had to let out the old belt a bit. Hey your not going to live for ever so go for it, if you don't travel first class your kids will, the end.More
One the best in NSW ! Food was amazing.Like the best pork belly we’ve had in many years .And everything else was absolutely first rate too. And I didn’t know what the other reviews are about with there comments on portions being small. They were...very generous not just meal sizes but also the sides -all was amazing. And lastly presentation was awesome. Definitely going back Well done to the chef !More
On arrival last night, discovered that we hadn’t made the booking correctly and it had not gone through! But the staff were so accommodating, they kindly gave us a lovely table by the window and we had the room to ourselves (we arrived when the restaurant opened)....The meal was delectable! Those chefs are gods! Bryce, our waiter, was charming, friendly, professional and attentive. Definitely going back when we next stay in the Southern Highlands.More
We visited Eschalot, with our immediate family (10 people), to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. While the wait staff were polite and attentive without being overbearing, we were disappointed in the food. The beef was over cooked and the lamb tough. The dessert was minute....It was not value for money. There was not enough choice for our vegetarian guest. Also, this is not a good venue if you are looking for a long, leisurely lunch to enjoy food and the company of your guests. The sitting is for two hours and is strictly adhered to.More
I am local to the Southern Highlands and really enjoyed my first dining experience. I raved about it to all of my friends and looked forward to going back. The day of our next booking I came down with viral gastro. My husband called the...restaurant to cancel our booking as I was too sick to go and we didn’t want to make other patrons or their staff sick. The cancellation was no problem until a cancellation fee of $100 was charged. On speaking to multiple staff at the restaurant, there was no work around and a post-Covid understanding of illness and protecting others made no difference. I even asked if the preauthorised amount could be used to secure a new booking because we did want to eat there - no, not an option. I am really disappointed by this whole experience and it is a shame but I will not eat here again.More
