When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We loved Sunsets as Avoca locals. We always took the kids there, even on the busy nights in summer and it never disappoints. However, the news around is that new management has taken over, resulting in the firing of several staff members, plenty of them...resigning as well. From an outside perspective it was clear to see the staff worked together as a team to ensure customers had the best experience possible. The vibes were always high, everybody (both customers and staff) had a smile on their face and looked like they were genuinely enjoying themselves, however this will change drastically over the next coming weeks, as the locals will begin to realise that new management is just money hungry, as they clearly don’t seem to care enough about the staff who worked their hardest through tough conditions of COVID-19 and extremely busy summer holidays. It is disappointing to see this significant change come with no warning, and we will be waiting on the reviews over the next coming weeks. We will not be coming back to Sunsets Bistro, as it truly upset us to hear what has happened to the place that once bought our family, and I’m sure many others, genuine joy and relaxation. Although the location and view cannot be changed, the vibes certainly can.More

Views are amazing but the service ruined our experience unfortunately. Food came out separately by 20minute gaps so no one actually ate together. Food was ok though. These beachside cafes hire inexperienced young people all the time. We’ll only go back in winter or for...a beer. Bar staff are fantastic!More

Seven of us for a family gathering Great location (we are local so possibly biased) Staff were helpful enough Food was appalling - even the kids complained (even though they ate half their burgers) “Seafood Catch” was greasy and what you might expect from a...bad country RSL club “Avoca Schnitzel” was dry and greasy and could have come from the same place mentioned above. Even though mine was virtually untouched the staff didn’t seem to think that was an issue. I mentioned it to a guy who seemed to be in charge but was relatively indifferent when I approached him - his defence was simply quoting that others seemed to like the food. Shame that such a great location cannot deliverMore

This is such a beautiful place to enjoy the view and enjoy a drink. There were 6 of us and everyone complained about their food. My fish was raw inside. I quietly complained about it and had to send it back but then never saw...the waitress again or offered anything else. It is SO noisy there. Would never eat there again!More

Great view, lovely location and to be honest some of the food did look good. Some burgers even looked good which is why we ordered them. My daughters burger had raw mince and was inedible. When taken back to the kitchen and pointed out the...response was "so you want a a well done burger" ... no ...just one that is cooked! Since when do you order a burger "well done", "medium" or"rare" ...seriously ! Do go for the view and a wine ...improved customer service and consistent good food would well be received.More

What a great little place, sit on the veranda and watch the waves roll in whilst having a drink or two. The food is basic but good, had the steak and was cooked perfectly and sides were good, throughly recommended if in the area do...yourself a favour and drop in and have a drink you will not be disappointed.More

Sunsets is a feast for the senses. Having a cocktail and watching the waves roll I is just the way you want to spend your holiday. The staff are friendly and approachable and considering the staff shortages you can see them all working together to...serve the holiday crowds. Food was amazing, we ordered the salmon and the chicken and it was delicious. We have been here in the past and the food was quite average but the chefs have turned a corner over the last year. The menu is a nod to the pub classics but they have added in some dishes that are fresh and delicious to compliment. They also have more than enough to cater for dietary requirements without feeling short changed. The kids menu is great value and for once offers children vegetables or salad with every dish! It’s nice to see a restaurant thinking of healthy options for children and under $10! Thanks sunsets, you are doing a great job in a hard time. See you next time we visit Avoca.More

Staff in bar very rude, let locals be served while standing behind us while we stood there for several minutes. 50mins waiting for food when table next to us turned up 1/2hr after us and were served first. A bar man grabbed the tops of...our unfinished drinks thinking we were done without asking. Sorry guys, we love Avoca but won’t be back to the surf club!More

Very pleasant and helpful staff. We came on a quiet Monday night but noticed a few other small groups & single people. Our dozen fresh dozen natural oysters were delicious. I ordered over baked salmon with crisp potatoes and pan fried cauliflower flowerettes. My husband...ordered barramundi and opted for asparagus and a medley of potatoes. Both meals were beautifully presented and very tasty. Such an idyllic setting overlooking the beach and watching waves rolling in. Very impressed and pleasantly surprised by the quality.More

Just left the restaurant now and i should say the view is awesome but disappointing food. Prices are a bit high for a not so good food. View is outstanding though.

This place was just full of people shouting and kids just running around. We had a booking and were seated and the table was not cleaned which was fine but when they came to clean it they took the plates and drinks but wiped down...half the table so we had to clean the other half. I was then given our food with no knife and forks and it was a kids pasta and so we waited thinking they would come then we took initiative and then they came. We also found that there was barely any meat in the pasta bolognase. This was proven to be a very disappointing dinnerMore

Friday night dinner with 4 adults & 3 kids. Excellent service & delicious meals. Have just read the January reviews & would agree with the comments on the tables being too close together & some meals not being as stated but maybe the management has...taken note & instituted improvements. With restrictions still in place tables were very well spaced.More

We have been supporters of the Bistro for many years and have eaten there numerous times. Unfortunately this summer all aspects of dining at the bistro have taken a HUGE step backwards. In summary there are too many tables, bookings are being taken when the...place is clearly full, the wait times for meals can be up to 90 minutes (despite being told wait time is 45 minutes), if you order meals on 2 dockets despite being on one table with one number, the meals will not arrive at the same time and and when the meals arrive they are of poor quality and not close to the standard of previous years. Further, some dishes, when they do eventually arrive, bear little resemblance to what is described on the menu. For example, we ordered prawns with a lime sauce, salad, beansprouts and herbs, sounded good. What arrived was a few overcooked prawns sitting on roughly cut raw cabbage with a handful of the cabbage also dumped on top of the sad prawns. Vegetarian nachos were similarly disappointing being a small plate of corn chips with too much cheese melted on them with a runny avocado purée of some sort and cold beans. On both visits this year we have reluctantly (as we know it’s not their fault) had to ask the wait staff to follow up on our order and raised concerns regarding the quality and / or temperature of the food once it has arrived. They have been apologetic and I would have to say embarrassed by what they are being asked to serve to customers. We have had to watch the poor staff members apologising similarly to many tables. To top things off, we caught a glimpse of the kitchen towards the end of our recent visit and the only words we can think of to describe the scene are shambolic and dirty. So many things are ‘off the rails’ at Sunset Bistro this year and its sad to see. There are many other dining options in Avoca these days for example the surf house, the pub, Avoca sands, Malaysian, Chinese, pizza and last but not least the point cafe which has been opening for dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings. We would recommend trying one of these and avoid the self destructing Sunsets.More

We have been here before and enjoyed our meals but this time was very disappointing. We arrived at 7pm but our meals took 1.5 hours to come. We were told there was a one hour wait and were promised the Starters to come first. They...arrived 5 mins before the mains! The best meal on our table was the Schnitzel and Avocado. The burgers were disappointing with the chicken one being luke warm and the bacon inside was cold. The kitchen clearly wasn’t coping. There seemed to be too much seating out and the kitchen couldn’t meet the demand.More
