We had lunch here one day while visiting San Juan del Sur. The menu is very extensive with tons of choices including a lot of great vegetarian and vegan options if you are looking for that. They have great coffee and tons of specialty coffee drinks to choose from as well. The cafe is cozy and an easy place to... More

Like Big Wave Dave's just down the street, this is a wi-fi café hangout with a library where you can get books to read on rainy days at the hostel. The food is mostly light fare, but includes a lot of vegetarian choices with fresh ingredients. Never had a bad sandwich there.

Went for coffee and breakfast here one day -- it was a little more expensive than other restaurants, but it was worth it. Breakfast and coffee were both unreal, and the atmosphere at El Gato Negro was really unique -- would love to go back!

Thank you for your kind review. We source most of the coffee from our own organic farm in the northern part of the country. We recently upgraded our roaster, which has also made a big difference in quality. We hope you enjoyed your time in San Juan del Sur and return again in the future. Blessings. More

We were pleasantly surprised to discover the neat cafe bookshop. Living in Central American for close to a year, we discovered bookstores are far and few between. We didn't try the food and only had juices (fresh squeezed and very good), but stayed to enjoy a respite from the heat, relax in the tranquil environment and peruse the book collection.... More

Phenomenal breakfasts, shakes & coffee. My bf loved the kefir. They make it without dairy. Back patio with shade and a free range bird farm out back that is entertaining while you eat!

Thank you for your kind words. It's such a treat to have non-dairy kefir here. It's made by a woman from the Faroe Isalnds, who also makes the yogurts. I am glad that you enjoyed the patio and our landlord's mini farm. The animal dynamics are fascinating. Happy travels! More

We were twice at el Gate Negro, once for a drink in the afternoon and once for breakfast. I try to describe our experience as objectively as possible and hopefully the owner will try to do the same. The drinks (a smoothie, normal coffee and cold irish coffee) were good, but the portions of the food were rather small (I... More

As of this writing, there has just been a sharp increase in radiation at Fukushima. Levels of radiation underneath the plant (where the coriums melted through the containment vessels, the ones that didn’t blow into the air and the ocean during the explosion) have spiked 400,000 percent to almost 1 BILLION becquerels per cubic meter. The underground wall around the... More

Today I was the second time at El Gato Negro. While thinking they may had a bad one yesterday I tryied another time, but today was even worse. We were sitting outside but no one would tell you, that it's self service outside..or were they just too busy? Definitely not! We ordered two house coffee's, a bagel and a salad.... More

I am sorry that you had a bad experience. The food is delicious and reasonably priced and includes 17 percent sales tax, which is printed on the menu. I do not have service outside because I cannot have my staff on the patio leaving the inside of the store unattended for long periods of time. If there was any doubt... More

We stoped there because someone told us to go there. At first I was impressed by all the books they had. But when I found a book to buy I was shocked that they will sell the book for a higher price than it would originally cost. What kind of concept is that?? The prices for the smoothies were totally... You went to an English bookstore in a non-English speaking country. Why would you think that the cost of a new book would be the same as in the US? Do you understand how much it costs to procure books? Obviously not, hence your horrible review. The new books sell for $3-$6 over the price of a new book in... More

This is a neat place to go for coffee and breakfast. It looks tiny from the street, but it is actually quite large inside and there is a nice patio in the back under palapas. The environment is cool and relaxing. Street noise hardly penetrates and they have a good wifi connection. We had coffee, Latte, breakfast sandwiches, fruit and... More
