The location is to die for, the restaurant is smart, the service is friendly and efficient, the wine list is local and reasonably priced and the food, although a 'just enough choice' menu, but serving prawns, steak, fish, chicken, all cooked to perfection on a chargrill to give the food a unique flavour. This restaurant has been very well thought through and providing the standard is kept to the level that we experienced, there are very few places on the Fleurieu that come near to The Swagman Chargrill. We will be back...very soon.

The view overlooking the beautiful Hindmarsh Valley was amazing. And just as amazing was the food we had for two. The blue swimmer crab gazpacho and chargrilled calamari with Asian salad was subtle, sweet and spicy. This was followed by chargrilled duck with cumquat sauce and chargrilled fish with an interesting fennel sauce. All dishes were delicious and beautifully presented. The wine list offered a good selection of wines at very reasonable prices. The service was friendly and very attentive. This regional restaurant was a delightful surprise.

Mid week birthday lunch with friends.
Unfortunately their signature dish - the duck was not available, that did not matter as everything these was sensational.
Most people ordered the steaks, each steak was cooked exactly as ordered and were really tender.
The entree’s were fantastic, especially the the prawns and the mushroom dish.
Great wine list.
Generous serves.
Location with exceptional views.
The absolute stand out was the service, all the staff had a “serious care factor “
This restaurant has to be one of the very best restaurants in the region, and only a short drive from victor harbour and other close by holiday locations.
High recommended!!!

A group of us had lunch here recently and enjoyed the setting. The service was exceptional, the staff were attentive without hovering, (even when we were the last ones left in the restaurant) and plates were cleared away quickly and the food was of a high standard. However, the prices are a bit on the expensive side for what you do get. All mains are $44 or there is the option of 2 courses for $54. So the mixed grill which a number of the group had it, was $44 and there just wasn't the value for money in that. I had char grilled prawns as an entrée and received 4 decent sized prawns, and the sauce was lovely. The cheese platter looked quite generous and the other sweets were all of a nice size serve, but overall there just wasn't the value for money. Previous menus show the mixed grill at $39.00 which will still a bit pricy was better than the $44. A new menu came out for summer and this is when the prices have risen. Good for a special occasion, but not really sure that it is really good value for money.

What a beautiful location, looking down upon a lush valley with old gum trees and a meandering billabong.
Swagman is a fairly swish restaurant specialising in char grill. On our first visit a month ago, I had the full Swagman grill which was a massive amount of meat including the most divine rissole I've ever tasted and a large, juicy and perfectly grilled lamb chop as well as pieces of steak and small sausages. I asked for no potato salad with it but perhaps more of the coleslaw instead. That was a problem since the salads are pre-prepared. Hmm. And not too good, as it turned out. Talk about tough old supermarket tomato. But, oh, the lamb was sumptuous and the herb treatment divine. I swooned and forgave the lousy salad.
For dessert, we had the poached quandongs and it was swooning all over again. Ambrosial. So, I asked, as we left, if quandongs were often on the menu. Always, I was told.
So, having dreamt of them ever since, we returned for a birthday lunch to be told quandongs were now off the menu and the menu was changing. "Sorry 'bout that".
Devastated, I again ordered the big grill and the waitress told me that it was a lot of meat and she would give me a takeaway container if it was too much. I was just a bit affronted. Did this mean she did not expect me to eat it? I shouldn't eat it all? I said I would share with the men which she seemed to think was OK. But,oddly, it was not as much meat as last time. Nor as good. The lamb was nice. But the wonderful herb flavour was absent. And, there was no rissole! No rissole! That was the other thing that had really impressed me on the last visit. Oh, and the salad was vile again,
The others liked their steaks well enough. They were hoping for quandongs, too. Quintessentially Australian, one had somehow seen them as a signature dish and I've been telling the world about them.
The server was very nice and worked hard and in good spirit. It must be tough to start out by disappointing customers.
So, for the location, this place is a gem.

Four of us ate here for lunch today. From the outset everything was spot on. The wait staff were friendly and attentive, the setting was sensational and of course the food was first rate.
Two of us the mixed grill and the other two had a chicken dish. Not a morsel left on the plate.
We'll definitely go back.

Friday long lunch with a group of friends.
The setting and views are sensational.
Interesting and complete menu.
The consensus was that each and every dish ordered was fantastic ( steaks cooked exactly as ordered)
The stand out dishes were;
The duck ( unfortunately only a few duck left)
The grilled barramundi was perfect.
The shared side salad and vegetables dishes were fresh and good.
Good wine list
Reasonable pricing
Staff were excellent and all has a “serious care factor “
Highly recommended

Beautiful location , restaurant interior was warm and welcoming. Crocodile entree was nice however only just warm when served, not sure if it was Intended to be hot. barramundi was excellent, very generous serving sizes and complimented with well made sauces and sides. We enjoyed the wood fire and relaxed atmosphere.

6 people celebrating a birthday and looking forward to a highly recommend restaurant.
The chargrilled meat was tender and cooked to order, some of the other dished were reasonably good, particularly the dressings. Desserts overall were 3 - star only.
Having booked 9 weeks ago we were looking forward to standard menu items of duck and rib eye on the bone. However, we were told as soon as we sat down that both were 'sold out'! - not sure if this was on the day (Thursday and 14 people) or during the week.
Service from one lady was excellent and from the other average.

We came for the tour and booked the next night for dinner as the smell of the food was just divine.
I love the experience they create from the moment you walk in. The wait staff were lovely and location is just beautiful, surrounded by so many gum trees and wildlife.
Our entrees were perfect and the flavour on the eye fillet was just magical. The lemon cheesecake for dessert was perfect to finish the meal off.
One small thing that we found a bit rude was at 9:30pm (our booking was 7:30pm) I had half a glass of wine left but we had finished the food and the waiter walked over to let us know they were packing up (which was completely fine) then he said "No rush but their is a rush" (for us to leave) he was nice enough about it but we felt it was unnecessary to even say seeing we would have only been about another 5 or 10mins.
Also just a side note the restaurant is in a quite remote location through windy roads with quite a lot of wild life around so I would most probably book for lunch as driving there at night was interesting but certainly worth a visit.

Wife and I have been for dinner here 9 months ago and thought it was great. Our two friends had not been before. We suggested it for the dining experience. We were not disappointed. This time was even better than the last. Food portions and variety were even better than last time, staff friendly and full of info. Note - this is a fantastic example of individual local cuisine so it is not a 'cheap country place' and the small inovative kitchen struggles to keep wait time between courses to an acceptable level for those more familiar with a Hotel dining room. So if you want a fabulous dining experience and you are not in a hurry at the time... do go here.
Wonderfull. We will bring others. Next time we will do a lunch so we can admire the great view.

The Swagman grill is located off the beaten track but well worth the time. Views over the rolling hills where you can spot kangaroos and native birds make it perfect for lunch on a sunny day. The friendly staff greet you and make you feel welcomed. The menu is varied and yes while the steaks are the standout, vegetarians aren't forgotten. The lemon myrtle bernaise invigorates the taste buds and lifts any meat dish. All serves are worthy of the prices. Easy access with no stairs is also great if wanting to celebrate a family milestone. Will be back again for sure

The menu is quite extensive creative with some great Aussie herbs and spices that are both subtle yet present. And the flavour of wood cooking is delicious and gently permeates your meal. What a great chef they have. Our welcome and table service from Brooke was just right - attentive but not overly so. The restaurant is spacious and decorated minimally but with taste and so nice to have white linen clothes and napkins! The view is beautiful across the hills and billabong and the drive similarly lovely past some big old gums.
Somewhere to go for a special occasion or time out with friends. We highly recommend this little gem and will certainly go back.

Firstly, we ate here a year ago and my review was 5 stars. This time it didn't quite hit the mark. The restaurant, views, ambience where all still lovely and the service was excellent but we felt the kitchen let the side down. The complimentary home made pate was a delight. The prawns were very tasty but lacked the wonderful char flavour that we loved first time around. The tenderloin was far from tender and was cooked to just over medium rather than medium rare as requested. As the chargrill is what this restaurant is all about, meat not cooked as requested is a no-no. The lamb mignon, whilst cooked as requested (pink but not bloody), was also very chewy. This is a really lovely place to have lunch and we will certainly return. I nearly awarded 3 stars not 4 but I know they can do better than this time around.
