The previous night we had a bad dining experience at the adjacent Hazards Bar and Lounge. Luckily the Floor Manager approached us, apologised and guaranteed we would have a better experience at The Bay if we would return. Thankfully we did, as the meal was...most creditable. The seafood was fresh and well prepared, and the service was appropriate. Staff were very good.More

This is a difficult review to rate. The food was absolutely fantastic and the service very good, but the menu was very limited to 5 starters and 5 mains. We stayed at the Lodge for 3 nights and would have liked to have eaten at...The Bay for all 3 nights, despite the expense. However, after 2 nights, we decided to eat at the Iluka Tavern for the 3rd night as we didn't want to have the same thing for another night. Even the fish of the day was the same on both nights. Yes, we are picky as we don't eat red meat. There was a vegetarian menu with 2 items on - one of which was a meal based on Brussel sprouts which I hate. What's more 2 of the starters were very spicy, in particular the scallops which were coated in very spicy nduja. Why do chefs serve delicate tasting scallops with spicy stuff like nduja or chorizo? It doesn't make sense.More

Staying at Freycinet Lodge we didn't fancy heading out to find dinner elsewhere so we ate at the Bay both evenings of our stay. The staff were uniformly polite and helpful. The menu is relatively short but there was enough choice for two meals -...we would have probably looked for somewhere else if we'd been staying any longer. And those meals we perfectly acceptable if lacking in any wow factor - which does mean that they are, in our view, a tad over-priced. The restaurant itself is a bit barn-like and so doesn't have a great atmosphere but one can gaze out onto the bay is one picks the right table.More

Twenty years ago this restaurant was part of the reason we fell in love with Tasmania but it seems the romance is dying. The view is the same. The staff are new faces but just as friendly. The food is unfortunately not as remembered. The...menu is unimaginative and some of the choices "interesting" to be charitable. Here in the home of fresh seafood the fresh scallops swam in a rich sauce of chorizo..no scallop flavour whatsoever. The dry aged beef ordered medium rare was over done and zero flavour. The charred sprouts tasteless. The most exciting flavour was the raspberry sorbet. We opted not to eat here on day two. I was dreadfully disappointed but given the lack of update to the lodge not surprised. I hope they invest some of the over inflated prices into an update soon.More

We stayed 2 nights in the Lodge and booked a table in the restaurant for the first night. We were very much looking forward to our meal after looking at the menu ahead of time and reading reviews. We opted for the Trust the Chef...“bespoke” menu. The first course consisted of a Burrata, peach and tomato salad, slices of meat served with a good fig jam and a hot scallop dish - these were all fine, not exciting but perfectly ok - like the rest of the meal they were decorated with many edible and not edible flowers in a rather silly and over the top way. It was the next course that signalled the lack of a good, professional chef in the kitchen and when we realised we were in for a disappointing night. The Seafood Chowder looked great with big pieces of fish and seafood but the soup itself was completely tasteless - can a restaurant serving so much fish and seafood really be incapable of producing a decent fish stock as a basis for its soup? Similarly the fresh truffle gnocchi arrived draped with large flakes of truffle ( and the ubiquitous flowers ) but the dish had literally no truffle flavour - in fact it was totally tasteless, the sauce seeming to contain no cheese, truffle or seasoning. The main course of beef rib was again just ok though the potato dish we’d ordered to go with it arrived as we were finishing the meat. The pudding was an unmemorable medley of blobs of ice cream and bits (with more flowers!) The service was very mixed. We stood for a good while waiting to be taken to our table - the restaurant was certainly busy but there should have been someone available to avoid this happening. Once we were seated we had another long wait to place our order but from then onwards the service was good. The staff knew the menu well and were happy to give more information about the dishes. We wanted to order a bottle of one of the Tasmanian Rieslings and the waiter was exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable, bringing a sample of several to help us decide. Without him it would have been a one star review.More

Great location but poor service. Wait staff too busy to poor wine or water. Better off going to a self service restaurant.

We had our final evening meal after a two day stay. Party of four. We had the blue eye trevalla and the seafood chowder. Both considered delicious. The sorbet won over again. The service was excellent with friendly and well informed staff who could not...do enough.thank you.More

We had our evening dinner and breakfast at the Bay Restaurant and was a faultless wonderfull experience. The breakfast was part of the room and we were so pleased it was a la carte not buffet. All our breakfast meals were good portions and delicious....Our evening meals were of a fine dining quality with excellent service and amazing scenery. The staff could not do enough for us in ensuring we had all we needed. The eye fillet and seafood chowder an absolute highlight.More

We had the most wonderful evening at The Bay Restaurant. The food was delicious, but the service was absolutely second to none! We had two of the most wonderful waitstaff, and they made our experience really special. Thanks so much!

Started our evening with a drink in the bar lounge to watch the sunset before moving next door to the restaurant. We were seated at our window table that was requested when we booked. Our waiter, Pablo, was friendly and helpful whilst taking our orders...and serving the entrees and mains. The food so far was delicious. However, an accidental dropped plate by our waiter changed things dramatically. We made sure he wasn't injured by the broken plate and assured him we weren't fazed by it. Unfortunately that was the last we saw of him. For some unknown reason he didn't bring the dessert menu and never returned to our table again. We had to get the attention of another waitress, Steffi, who looked after us superbly for the rest of the meal. Dessert was again delicious. Overall the evening was very good but for being made to feel awkward by the waiter. Still highly recommend the restaurant.More

We ate at the Bay each night of our 3 night stay at Freycinet Lodge and enjoyed it each time. A good menu with some creative touches, but the colourful presentation was especially appreciated.

Whilst we were not staying at the Freycinet Lodge they do cater for non residents too and we were thrilled. The staff were friendly, easy to chat too and very attentive. They were also knowledgeable about the foods. Tables at The Bay have views over...the ocean and there is also a deck area for pre-dinner drinks. Definitely worth a visit.More

It went wrong from the beginning, I rang to book a table and was told by receptionist that there was no need to book as there was a lot of availability. Then when we showed up we were told that we should have booked and...there is no table available. He had the nerve to suggest that I tried booking the wrong restaurant !! We were told to come back in 1/2 hour, we came back and of course table was not ready. If there was another restaurant nearby, we would have walked out. After waiting for over 1 1/2 hours, we enquired only to be told that the order had not been sent! It was going to be ready is 10 minutes, and of course it was not 10 min, half hour later the food came. It was not even good, and over priced and by this stage we had waited for over 2 hours for our food, we were no longer hungry. Now it’s nearly 10 pm and we are just eating . Do yourself a favour, do not come here, go to Coles bay and there’s better, cheaper food with better service.More
