Delicious food, perfectly cooked, in a convivial atmosphere with friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff. The food is absolutely amazing and the portions are very generous, so it’s very good value for the cost. You definitely need to book in advance as it’s one of only three places on Holy Island that does evening meals, and they get booked up at all times, especially high season, and especially when the causeway is closed. Don’t hope for the best, or you’ll be disappointed and left wandering hungry around the village!

We had dinner twice at The Crown and Anchor in the week we stayed on Holy Island, the food was beautiful 👍🏻 the sea bass with brown shrimp and caper sauce was delicious as was hubbys lamb chops and my daughters halloumi burger on the second visit we had the fish and chips with mushy peas ,again delicious, the batter on the fish was crispy and very light the fish itself was gorgeous !! You need to book for the evening service as it is hugely popular we booked the week before we arrived on the island and just managed to get a table for the Friday evening! The staff are lovely and friendly my husband had drinks there in the afternoons which he enjoyed very much due the great atmosphere in there . Highly recommend this lovely pub 👍🏻

We ate evening meals here on three consecutive nights and each meal was perfection. Although an extremely busy pub/restaurant the friendly staff were always on hand to help or advise. The bar area is cosy with a real fire blazing on the chillier nights. The restaurant area is tastefully decorated and tables are sufficiently separated to give diners privacy to enjoy the fabulous food. Many thanks.

Mid- week visit to the island but still busy. The interior of the pub is pleasant and airy. Very friendly traditional service (no apps or tablets here.) Particularly nice was the offer of tap water rather than expensive bottled stuff. My wife really enjoyed her mushroom arancini. The only problem was the price of the cheese and pickle sandwich at £8, which really is over the top. It was very nice though.

A pleasant restaurant with exceptional waiter service by Matty. He has to be one of the most charismatic and attentive waiters we have ever encountered. With so many allergies in the group, he was informative and reassuring at every turn. The ambience was pleasant and there was no rush to eat and leave. We had the burger, fish and chips, fish stew and venison. No complaints about the quality of the food only that the fish stew and venison were meagre in portions. It may be a la carte but we expected more. On the whole, we would return but mainly due to Matty. Thanks Matty.

Fortunately the weather was amazing allowing us to sit out in the beer garden. This has wonderful views of the castle & bay where boats are anchored. The three of us enjoyed their wonderful fish & chips which were served in a takeaway box including a cutlery pouch at our table. The fish was of top quality, bright white with large flakes & coated in a wonderfully light batter.

Very pleasant two night stay in clean large room (1) with view toward priory. Definitely the best way to see the island is to stay and experience how quiet it gets once the causeway floods! Staff were friendly and the food (dinner and breakfast both days) was pretty good considering a limited number of eateries on the island and the "captive" audience does not create massive competition. Nice beer too!

The Crown and Anchor is a typical pub with wooden tables, wooden settles against the walls, and an assortment of chairs. However, the food is excellent and the staff very helpful and accommodating. My husband didn't want rice with his meal so they were quite happy to substitute for potatoes. They have a good wine list and a good assortment of local beers. The only reason we haven't given it 5 stars if because (as with all places up there) they allow dogs in the dining area.

After a week's walking in the Boarders and Northumbria we had not been impressed by the food, until we found this gem of a pub and its inspirational owner. The food was sensitively cooked and beautifully presented. The owner takes your order and checks that all is well. He really understands and cares about food and drink. He hunts and fishes some of the food - the venison carpaccio was from a deer he had shot. Single malts were delivered (as they should be but rarely are) with a small carafe of water and a dropper to allow just enough water to open up the drink. This is the last independent hostelry on the island. It has rooms. It is a class (or more) above the alternatives. Book in advance.

The Seafood stew was absolutely spot on - it had just the right amount of seafood, a delicious flavour and came with a tasty home-baked stottie. We followed it with an enormous slate to share full of local cheeses, crackers, candied walnuts, chutney and two big slabs of rich fruit cake. Excellent local beers and fabulously friendly service. This is a must visit place on Holy Island. So much so we ate dinner there next day, a completely different set of choices. The menu is so good and wide -ranging we’d have been happy to go again.

Stopped here for lunch while exploring the Holy Islands today. The pub was very clean and the staff very friendly. Loved the fact it served food from 11:30 so we did not have to hang about on the island as we finished in the Priory at 11:35 and wanted to maximise our time on the island. We each had the Crown burger which comes with bacon and cheese as well as chips and a small salad. My son had a kids burger that came with chips. The menu is slightly limited but the quality of the burger was superb and there was a good selection of drinks on offer.

We were fortunate in staying here for four nights. We were introduced to Holy Island by friends, never having actually stayed there. They suggested the Crown and Anchor. We stayed in room 4, It was a lovely room and the occasional sound from the kitchen beneath was not an issue for me personally. The food, breakfast and dinner was unfailingly good,Evenings in the bar were very, very pleasant, nice staff, and lovely fellow guests who appreciated the special atmosphere on Holy Island. Would we return? Certainly. The welcome was second to none and we felt really at home. Parking on the island is no problem , when the day visitors have departed. Holy Island is a good centre for touring the area, but watch the tides or you may get very, very damp.

What a great place to eat. The menu was varied and catered for most tastes. As a vegetarian, I had 3 choices of starters and two of main course- I can't tell you how often that is not the case. All the food was delicious- the bean crumble was over-heated but once it cooled down, the flavours came out. Great selection of real ales, cider and wine. We were staying on the island so it was also extremely helpful to be able to take our dog into the bar area to eat. Most of all, however, what made the experience were the staff. Welcoming, friendly, efficient; just great hosts. I have seen other comments about prices, and this place is cheaper than our village local and I actually think £40 per head for 3 courses and drinks (which is what it worked out to, the two times we ate there) is extremely reasonable. It is best to book if looking to eat there of an evening. Their website email address is not correct but a simple search details the correct address. Well done Crown and Anchor!

First impressions are of a traditional pub but the first clue that it may be a bit more than that comes from perusing the huge array of malt whiskies. The lunch menu is not huge but looked really different. I ordered a pastrami and Gouda ciabatta whilst my partner chose a halloumi ciabatta. The portions were generous and the food was superb. Listening to the bar staff explaining to other customers that their seafood comes fresh each day from just up the coast, we wished we’d plumped for the seafood platter to share. Holy Island is not a place anybody ‘passes through’. This great pub makes the diversion well worth while.

Booked in advance while staying on the island as we know it’s usually booked up. There is a nice bar area which you walk through to the restaurant. We ordered a bottle of wine with our meal in which I had the fish & chips which were plentiful and tasty at I think £15. Friendly & helpful staff made it a relaxing meal.
