There are pubs and then there are PUBS! Today there is so many pubs that has been turned into some Disney version of a English pubs. You know what I mean. Fancy menu and fancy interior but completely lacking in charm. Then on the other side you have the drink led local that try to cling on for dear life... More

For a small country pub the Anglers Retreat excels at excellence. The owners and managers are always friendly and helpful. This is a 'local' but the regulars are very cordial; normally indicative of an owner/management team with the best attitude towards their guests. This pub is not like other establishments of this type. Most establishments assert that their food is... More

Here is Smithy enjoying a rest by the fire after a good walk around the Reservoirs. His humans are enjoying an absolutely GORGEOUS MEAL of Lamb Shanks in Red wine gravy, proper mashed potatoes and peas! I can't recommend this place enough! It is the one pub I feel quite at home coming for a lunch on my own, as... More

A decent, traditional, local pub. Not flashy but a nice group of locals with good beer and a cracking pizza cooked in a wood fired pizza oven. On the occasions that I have visited this pub I have enjoyed it

Researching the area for a possible short break for friends. Stopped here for a coffee mid Sunday afternoon. Very busy, but happy to sell me just a coffee as I needed a caffeine hit.

Popped in here after recently moving to the area. Met with a warm welcome from the very friendly bar man. Beer was delightful and i sampled a pint of the local ale from Tring. Although i didnt eat here the food smelt and looked delicious. The barman was very knowlegable about the pub trade and it was a pleasure to... More

Beer's good but don't eat there. Last week we were given home made chicken pie with raw pastry, instant mash a teaspoon of peas. If someone doesn't like cooking then they shouldn't work in a kitchen. The owners should try sampling the food. Had many previous bad experiences. They seem to have had only one cook who was really good... More

I've got to say that the team at The Anglers Retreat are brilliant. Can't have asked for nicer people who helped in any way they could. Nothing was too much for them to do to make our stay as easy as possible.
