What an unexpected delight the Mountain Barker Hotel is!
We are in South Australia for a holiday and we were meeting up with a friend who lives in Mount Barker for dinner and she suggested that we go to the Mount Barker Hotel. When we arrived and got the “pokies vibe”, we figured that we were at best about to have a pub classics kind of night - not exceptional but nothing to complain about.
How wrong we were.
We were very impressed with the menu options with a healthy mix of pub classics and more modern food options. I chose the duck, my partner chose the beef schnitzel and our friend ordered the eggplant parmigiana.
While waiting for our meals to arrive, the waitress approached us with a complimentary garlic bread. She said the chef sends one out occasionally and he chose our table to receive this gift. And what a gift it was. I have eaten a lot of garlic bread in my life. A huge amount of it. By far, this was the best garlic bread I have ever looked at much less the best I have eaten. I contemplated cancelling my main and just ordering 3 serves of the bread. Haha
My duck main was perfect, partner enjoyed the beef schnitzel and friend kept ooohing and aaaahing while she ate the eggplant dish.
We highly, highly, highly recommend dining here. Food and service were bang on.
If management is reading this, give that chef a pay rise (hahahaha) and get him/her to please send me the garlic bread recipe!
I would definitely recommend taking the drive up the mount to dine here.

Hello Peter, Firstly, we appreciate you taking the time to leave us such a wonderful review. We're delighted to hear that our menu offerings, both seasonal and classic, surpassed your expectations and that you had such a wonderful experience with us. Our head chef truly values customer satisfaction and is always eager to share his passion for cooking which is why if you send us your email address he would like to send you his garlic bread recipe. Thank you once again for your kind words and for choosing to dine with us. We look forward to welcoming you back soon!

Hands down the best 'pub feed' I've had. Beef schnitzel for myself and pork schnitzel for my wife were far more than we expected from a rural pub on all fronts.
Decent wine list, great food, and just as importantly really friendly and fun staff.
A touch out of our usual way but we have friends who live in mt barker and will be making it a point to get a meal there again next time we're in Adelaide.
Couldn't fault it.

Valentines Day was celebrated with 28 of our friends from our Walking Group. We caught the train from Noarlunga Centre to Goodwood station then transferred to Mount Barker station for Glenalta where the train stopped directly at the back of the hotel. How convenient for the elderly. It was the first time for many of us to be at the hotel so we were rather impressed by the entrance to the Bistro and all other areas of the building. The view of the hillside from the Bistro room was peaceful too.
We all had the Seniors meal package at the price of $22:00 to which we received a Main, a dessert and a coffee. The meal portions were very generous and if you had to catch the train again before 3:00pm (pensioners only), then your coffee was made to go. Out of the 30 people in our group, only 2 did not enjoy their meal so much but did enjoy the day out. The majority of our group have expressed the interest to go back again and I agree with them. It was good value for money, the food was very nice, the portions were generous and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Had dinner at the Barker hotel. The meals were below average.
Despite the general lack of flavour and ambience! I was un happy because I asked for my burger rare and stressed that I would order something else if it could not be done. They checked with the Cheff and reassured me that rare would be ok.
When the meals arrived My husbands surf and turf had over cooked, soggy prawns and my burger was served well done.
Only reason for giving two stars is the friendly staff.
Would only return for drinks and pool.

It’s Open!
So great to be able to dine at The Barker once again. We reserved a table and on arrival, we were shown to it and given instructions on how to go about ordering our meals.
The Barker now has a 2 course menu available and this was the option my wife and I chose.
My wife ordered pumpkin entree to be followed by the roast pork. I had potato & leak soup, followed by 200gm home made beef burger..
The food was excellent and totally worth the price. The staff were as friendly and courteous as ever...

During my first week in beautiful Mount Barker, I decided to try Sunday lunch at The Barker Hotel.
What a fantastic decision that was.
I chose roast pork with all the trimmings, and every bite was delicious.
The pork was cooked to perfection, with lots of crackling to enjoy.
The vegetables were perfect too.
I had to take my Lemon Delicious dessert home with me as I simply could not fit it in.
This was a favourite family dessert of mine when growing up, and it was just as good as Mum’s.
I can highly recommend this meal to everyone.

My wife and I moved tables soon after we sat down to escape the cold. However the whole restaurant was cold. We asked if the air conditioning was on and were told that they would get back to us. They did not. We asked another person why it was so cold. She replied that the heating was off because one person said they were warm. We were appalled when she told us we could go into another area near the bar and betting. We were eating our food by then and chose to stay put. Our other option was to wait until the hot person left at which time the heat could be turned on.
Needless to say, we did not order desert. When leaving we complained only to be told repeatedly, 'im sorry you feel that way' as if it was us who had the problem. We wondered if there was a person complaining that they were hot or whether the whole situation was contrived to save on power. We will not go back.

We were a group of 5, and all meals were delicious and well presented. The slow cooked okey lamb was so yummy!! Also cocktails were great. The coffee at end of the night was a bit of a letdown but that is the only low point in an otherwise great experience. Was very surprised and pleased.

Nice venue, average food. The venue itself is quite nice, nice atmosphere. However after several attempts at this restaurant, the food continues to disappoint. Several of us had bruschetta to start. Burnt sourdough bread, some sliced tomatoes and less than 5 basil leaves. No balsamic, no feta, no onion. Lacking any real flavour. Mains, we had the pork roast special. The menu said it came with Swede and turnip. It didn’t, it came with cauliflower. Not a big issue, but the nail in the coffin...pork roast with no crackling. Should be a sin. We won’t be trying here again anytime soon, especially at the prices they charge, I expect better food.

Friendly staff, very helpful. We were hoping to settle in with entree and main. Halfway through entree the kitchen asked waiter to check if we were ready for mains? Rushed through meals, bit disappointing. Food was okay, chicken burger was mostly batter. Have been to the barker before and it has been good so maybe just a bad night.

Nice modern and clean venue. Friendly waitresses. Our table order burgers and schnitzels. Great value for money. Definitely enjoyed the chicken parmi and the salad was super fresh. Especially loved the dressing. Large restaurant with booths. Acoustics perfect too.

Not a bad feed. Pub meals but fresh and tasty and the usual pub variety. Prices are not too bad. Nothing fancy but it's all fine.

Enjoyed the venue other than the excessively loud music and the long wait to order drinks even when dining in…
We thought the food was delicious and appreciated the range of craft beers and local wines.

Our meal of fish was Coorong mullet...and lentils...yes dear Young Ones fans... lentils and 3 leaves of rocket. $33 .Yes the lentils were well cooked and the petite mullet was local . The other special of roast pork was only $26...but very tired...been sitting in Baine Marie too long... disappointed. Service was excellent.

Hello Richard, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your meals recently. Our Chef’s philosophy is to start with the highest quality ingredients, not to overcomplicate them and present delicious dishes where the produce speaks for itself. The Coorong Mullet special showcased quite a few local producers, so we're sad to hear it wasn't to your liking on this occasion. We always strive to produce excellent food which is why the Roast Pork is never stored in a Bain-Marie and we would have been happy to replace it if you felt the meal was not up to standard. I'm so glad to hear that the service was excellent and I do hope you will give us another try in the future. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact our Venue Manager, John: John@thebarkerhotel.com.au.
