Great service, over priced food

Came here for dinner on Friday night, the wait staff where great and accommodating. We ordered the platter for 2, I found the quality was not worth the price. Firstly all the meat was stacked on top of the sauerkraut and potatoes, the potatoes where gross, they tasted stale, looked old and where barely warm, the meat was ok, overall the service was great, food below average, plus lots of flies inside

Spent a few nights in this lovely German inspired town and was not disappointed. The German Arms does not look that big from the street view but once inside and in the rear dining area it was a pleasant surprise. The food selection is varied to give everyone a wide choice if you are not inspired by German cuisine. The prices are very reasonable for not only the food but also for the 25 beers they have on tap. If you are lucky enough to be there on a Wednesday join in with the quiz night patrons - great fun even if you can't get any right answers.

Great place to eat

The German Arms was not our 1st choice on the night we went there, we are very pleased we did. The staff were very friendly and happy to make some slight changes in the menu when we asked. So accommodating! Be ready for large serves, although you can ask for a doggie bag if you wish. The decor is also lovely. Can't recommend this place enough - loved it and hope to go back to Hahndorf soon.

Shocking food

We booked for Christmas lunch 2019 and very much regret it. To Turkey and ham appeared to be out of tins and all of the veggies bar the French beans were frozen. The wait staff we spoke to agreed and advised the best dish to come out of the kitchen was the lamb so he swapped our lunches thankfully. For $99 per adult the food the restaurant was serving was horrendous and I felt sorry for all of the other families who had booked and paid for what we were all hoping to be a fabulous Christmas lunch and were served such substandard food. Highly recommend if you are looking to book a nice meal in Hahndorf you avoid this venue.

It Shouldn’t Be This Hard

Three of us tried to eat here for lunch today. My mother’s desert was great. My wife an I were sharing the $32 chicken breast, stuffed with wurst and wrapped in bacon - it sounded great. Every aspect of the plate presented was ether cool or lukewarm. I politely told the staff about the food temperature issue and agreed to a new meal. The dish presented to us the second time had cold mashed potatoes and we didn’t even bother to cut into the meat. The wait staff were quite apologetic and took the meal away. I would have liked it if they also removed the empty second plate and sent a manager over to apologise for twice failing to deliver a meal at an acceptable temperature. There were very few patrons at the time and it was early in the service period.

In the era of covid the time where we have pubs and restaurants that have been doing it tough and now we are at a stage where we are still limited with the number of patrons, why should should I be satisfied with waiting almost 25 minutes with dirty plates and cutlery and empty glasses before someone asks if we are done! Had to admit to being surprised that our meals took around 2 minutes to prepare and deliver from ordering! That's no mean feat, roast dinner and schnitzel made in 2 minutes...... shame the chips were lukewarm basking underneath and in the heat of the freshly deep fried schnitzel. Yet dessert when they eventually asked, took almost 15 minutes to deliver, strudel and ice cream and coffee! I sound harsh I admit but service is one of the reasons for returning to place and its how I recommend it to others. Sorry, quite disappointed and not sure about returning at this stage.

We have been going to the German Arms regularly on a Thursday night for the past year or two. We really enjoyed the quality of our meals, hence retured there frequently as an easy & cheaper mid-week option. Sadly, the schnitzels have been taken off of the menu as a special and the atmosphere is somewhat lacking in the 'German' character that one would expect from such a place. To top it off, there has been a very obvious change in chefs and the food presentation & quality has gone downhill significantly. Sad to say, this won't be one of our regular haunts anymore as the food was so average and disappointing. I could seriously make better at home - & I am not a trained cook. We will not be attending again or recommending it as we previously have in the past (unless these issues are seriously addressed and we somehow hear of some improvement). Basic, over priced and lacking in the details where the cooking is concerned.

Extremely Disappointed

Went in for dinner only to leave extremely hungry. Restaurant quite, meals came out in a timely manner however they were stone cold. I bought this to the attention of the staff and the response was ‘oh that’s no good’. Returned to the table expecting the waiter to come and get our plates and help rectify our concern - NO that wasn’t the case - no one attended our table for the next 20 minutes, we decided to leave as we were hungry. On our departure I mentioned to another staff member how dissatisfied we were with the food and the service to receive the response ‘ that’s a shame’ no offer to rectify the problem. Care fact was zero. Went to The Haus and ordered our 2nd dinner for the night, was great as was the service. We will not be back again.

Took ages to be served and they got an order wrong, meaning my wife ate about 20 minutes after the rest of us. The giant hotdog is giant but not everyone finished their meals, and not just because of the size. Meh

German fare to the max

Not only stocking an extensive range of German beers, but also a menu packed full of German based foods. Plates of grilled wursts, speck and ham hocks along with sauerkraut and mustards. Large servings abound, so make sure you bring a hearty appetite and be prepared to linger a bit longer to let your food settle before venturing out to explore the village.

Expensive and Ordinary

I have been visiting this hotel every 4-5 months for the past 4 years and after today I won't be going back again. I am not sure what has changed since last year but the food today was mediocre and expensive. I paid $26.90 for a plate of fish and chips (cost $2 extra for grilling the fish, rather than having it in batter) which was worth about $12 maximum as a pub meal. Not sure what the fish was, but it didn't have a very fresh taste and was accompanied by frozen chips and some fairly ordinary salad. Given the produce which SA is famous for this was not that brilliant at all. I had a 500mL German Beer which was Ok, but priced at $16.90 rather expensive. I won't be going back again and will try other locations in another 6 weeks when I return to SA.

Hadn't been before, won't go again! Food was pathetic. Bangers & mash was two burnt sausages on potato slop with a bit of gravy. Special hotdog was no better than something you'd get from a hotdog stand. Burnt something found in the hotdog. I love wholeseed mustard but I don't like to eat it with a spoon there was one lump of it.

Went for dinner before our way back to the city. We’re expecting at least above average culinary experience as they seem to be the fanciest one around Hahndorf. I couldn’t be more wrong. Ordered 3 different dishes and I must say I could’ve eaten at KFC or Hungry Jacks! 1. Lamb shank is cold and tasteless. Kind of smelly too. 2. Salmon was average but then again - served cold. 3. Porterhouse Steak at 40 Aud is not worth it. Anybody can buy a 10 dollar steak at Cole’s and cook it for 8 minutes. Overall, not impressed. Staff were very friendly and polite though. And food is served on time. Food quality needs to be improved…. seriously!

We went there for an instant lunch and while most of the shops closed for lunch they have still opened and serving customers. We actually enjoyed the food, service was excellent and worth for money. But the toilets were dirty ( ladies one) . That’s the only con.

The menu and venue is good, a little pricy for the standard though. We had, Two burgers and two schnitzels with peppercorn sauce. One was chicken schnitzel and generous the other was a beef, But paper thin. In regards to the beef portion you get bigger for cheaper at other Adelaide pubs. However, I’m guessing the chef has self respect and the paper thin beef is a owners decision. The burgers were good. We did wait almost an hour for lunch, and when I asked for an update it was brought out immediately (clearly sitting around) and lukewarm. To give them the benefit of the doubt we don’t send food back so I’m sure they would have apologised and replaced them. The other customers around us seems to have a speedy service. The only real note sour was the lady with the British accent. She came out with our food which were the mains. When my mum asked if they had forgotten our starters as well, she snapped ‘I only have two hands’, a little snotty but maybe just flustered. Overall they specialise in German food and beer which we didn’t have so maybe that would be worth trying next time for better experience.
