The Roast of the Day pizza was probably the best pizza I've ever had! Crust was unreal, topping even better. 10/10, highly recommended.

In the spring of 2022, my wife and I undertook an organised bus tour of Longreach and Winton, of one week’s duration, travelling to Longreach from Brisbane and return on “The Spirit of the Outback” train. Our two nights in Winton took us to some...amazing attractions including the Age of Dinosaurs; the Dinosaur Stampede at Lark Quarry; Carisbrooke Station and the awesome “Three Sisters” landform; and the Waltzing Matilda Centre. On our first day in Winton, after touring the Waltzing Matilda Centre in Elderslie Street, we had some free time before lunch to enjoy the main part of town further along Elderslie Street. In this time we visited three of the town’s iconic pubs all located close together in an historic hotel precinct. First it was the North Gregory Hotel where we admired the Dorothy Mayo sand blasted etchings on the glass doors and also enjoyed a drink (it was a very hot day), then we crossed the road to the Australian Hotel for another drink until it was time for lunch at the Tattersalls Hotel a few doors further up. This short review highlights our fleeting visit to the Australian Hotel – a most delightful looking historic structure, dating back to 1925, and boasting an impressive long front verandah. There was an earlier hotel on the site of similar design which commenced trading in 1897; however like many hotels of that era, this early version of the "Australian Hotel" succumbed to the ravages of fire in 1924 and was rebuilt. The rebuilt hotel is the one still standing today. From across the road outside the North Gregory, the Australian Hotel has an imposing presence which proved very enticing to us for our next drink. There are numerous tables and chairs in the beer garden outside the Hotel where patrons can either enjoy their drink or have a pub meal. The inside bar area has attractive features, including an impressive counter which incorporates a pleasing semi circular corrugated iron clad feature at its centre. Above the counter, as one would expect for a hotel with "Australian" in its name, are two versions of the Australian flag as well as a Queensland flag. We enjoyed our drink (a nice cold Great Northern beer) at one of the outside tables with a couple of other members of our bus group - who just happened to also have the same idea as us, when calling in to visit this place. It was only a fleeting visit we made here and it would have been great to have either stayed here for a night or two or even had a meal. However, as fleeting as our visit was, it was also a very memorable one.More

Great food. Free working dog show and talk Re local area. An unexpected find. This is way better than the stockman hall of fame, and cheaper. Make sure you do this!

A 100 year-old hotel in need of refurbishment was an experience I’m glad I shared with my friend. The floors are very wonky, there are shared toilets and showers, there’s hardly a wall that’s straight or a door that closes easily or snugly but it’s...charming in its own way reminiscent of a bygone era. If it’s comfort you’re looking for, look elsewhere. It it’s a look into the past and you don’t mind the missing ensuite, an adventurous spirit will lap it up. It certainly spices up the dinner conversations.More

BEST steak sandwich we have had in a long time. The brisket burger was not available when we ordered, and our initial disappointment was soon unfounded - lovely roll, crispy onion rings, tender steak, nice salad. Almost didn't finish it, but that would have been...criminal!!More

This pub looks, feels and tastes the part! No more fitting name than just the ‘Australian Hotel’!!! The rib steak was PERFECTLY cooked medium rare, a feat few pubs seem to manage, and it was no trouble to add pineapple to the top of a...schnitzel :) We had a small wobble with an incorrect bottle of wine but it was rectified without issue. We ‘spread the love’ at a few places across Winton and Longreach, but this pub was the real deal….helped especially by them serving yummy kangaroo spring rolls 🦘!!More

First off, hats off to all staff. smiling faces, seem genuinely happy to work there and helpful. My review is just on my dinner experience as that's all I did there. I was going across the road to the cinema so it was the perfect...location. I had walked down the street to another pub who didn't start dinner until 6pm. But I wanted dinner sooner and these guys did dinner from 5.30pm, perfect, also good for elderly people like my parents who eat at 5.30. Staff were courteous and turned the juke box down (without me asking) when I sat down. I had the Fettuccini off the specials menu and it was to die for, so delicious, so compliments to the chef/cook. I sat indoors in the air con at the beautiful cut tree stump bar like table. And to top things off when a lady (I'm assuming the owner) saw me swishing flies away, she gave me a mini fan thingy that keeps the flies away. I was impressed as I always thought they were a gimmick and never bought one, now I will. Thanks for a lovely dinner.More

You are spoiled for choice where you eat in Winton these days and that is wonderful. The great pub meals are still a thing and enjoying the outback friendliness is an appealing part of coming here. Unfortunately, the Australian hotel is an exception and a...gentleman in the counter has a very unwelcoming attitude. We approched them twice for a meal and failed to get served. The most pathetic one was their lack of flexibility in accommodating for children needs. From the breakfast menu including fried eggs the gentleman refused to contemplate preparing scrambled eggs arguing they had "limited equipment here". A very lame excuse for our manners and costumer service. Avoid this place for meals. It is not worthed and the pub accross the road (north Gregory hotel) is quite the opposite. Friendly, accomodating, efficient and scrumptious foodMore

Went there for breakfast. Staff were friendly, breakfast was “double” as described. Blah blah blah as I have to add 100 characters. There was nothing wrong with this place. It’s what it says, and one of the few places in Winton with breakfasts.

I was recommended to the Australian Hotel for evening dinner after arriving in Winton on the bus late in the afternoon. The range of food on the menu was interesting, the staff friendly, and the atmosphere busy and convivial. However, I stood around for 3/4...an hour waiting for my order. I watched other people come and order and be served. In the end, a young waiter went to the kitchen to chase it up. My $20 takeaway senior's roast came out a minute later. By the time I walked around the corner to my motel room, it was lukewarm, I was very tired by then and did not enjoy it. I did not go back because of this although the pub was otherwise very inviting.More
