Decided on a lunch at King Ludwig’s after a walk through Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and we weren’t disappointed. We were a bit early so had a drink in the bar which gave us plenty of time to review the extensive (and well priced) range of German beers on offer. Our table was on the veranda which has great views over the glasshouse mountains and the food was equally stunning. The pork hock was the winner with super crispy crackling and succulent meat with sauerkraut, beer and gravy onion and a dumpling. We followed this with the sticky toffee pudding which wasn’t really needed but when is a dessert ever needed. Great food, great foods, great beer and great views what more do you need. Highly recommended

Went to King Ludwig’s again yesterday for lunch. We had the pork knuckle and jagerschnitzel there were four of us and everyone was very happy with their meal. Desserts were apple strudle and passion fruit sorbet and once again we were not disappointed. We have not been for a few years and was glad to see KL back to delivering a magic experience once again.

A return visit for us since pre COVID and although menu choices were limited enjoyed our lunch on the deck. Food was good and service friendly and efficient. A reasonable expensive outing and the venue would not appeal to budget conscious diners.

The Good: Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, family friendly, Good assortment of German beer, fairly priced, Very good strudel which comes a very close second to my mothers The not so good: The food is pretty average. No better than standard German pub food and no different to what you would find at any German club or Bavarian beer garden. There needs to be more sides available. The kids had schnitzel which you would traditionally expect to be veal however it was chicken which is very Aussie and you would expect at your local RSL not a German restaurant. Kransky sausages which also aren't German made an appearance. A bit more authenticity is what I expected. It would have also been nice to have a veal schnitzel and perhaps a pork belly on the adults menu. Aussies that don't know might like this place but I can't imagine id be bringing friends from Germany here. Terrible wine list. Germans are known to have the best riesling in the world. Why have mainly Australian wines on the menu? Would have loved a sweet German riesling with dessert but instead all that was on offer as far as sweet wine was a cheap $15 browns brothers port. pre ordered 9 pork knuckles by the day I was told I had to get the order in for our group and then received a text message that afternoon saying that they have now realised they only had 3 to 5 available and then on arrival got told they only had 1. They did a pork roast in lieu of the pork knuckle but this was pretty basic and didn't have any crackle and was something you would find at an RSL. It's a shame because with some tweaks this place has a lot of potential and from other reviews I've since read perhaps it was more of what I had expected years ago under the previous owners. On summarising if your in the area and feel like a decent meal with nice atmosphere and a friendly face I would go here but I wouldn't expect to be blown away with the food and nor would I drive all the way from Brisbane specifically for it.

Very disappointing our friends who live locally went, when the original owner had it and loved it. The new lessee has been there three months. If you can’t book get out of the kitchen. The cook certainly not a chef made food that had no eye appeal. The sausages weren’t even browned and looked steamed, apart from looking terrible it tasted terrible. The food was made with no love. We also had the barramundi which was tasteless, the steamed vegetables that were tucked underneath looked and tasted a couple of days old. However the Apple strudel was beautiful. Do yourself a favour and don’t go

King Ludwig's Maleny
Dear Marcia, Thank you very much for your visit and harsh comments. A bit more constructive criticism would be helpful rather than being so emotional and rude about it. The original owner sold the business almost 4 years ago, Barbara and Klaus have moved on… my name is not Klaus, nor do I look like a Barbara. I work 7 days a week to bring King Ludwigs to a new and different level. DIFFERENT, so what’s the point that guests like you still have the urge to compare any operator that takes over KL with what you had 4, 10 or 20 years ago? And just for your information, we are still using the same suppliers that Klaus did, same trusted companies for our meat, vegetables and ESPCIALLY for the sausages & small goods… Your criticism regarding the sausages is not valid I am afraid. Furthermore, I’d like to make you aware that I am Austrian and FYI in Austria as in Bavaria, we brown all sausages, BUT we do NOT brown Frankfurter sausages – you’ll have a hard time finding images of browned (real) Frankfurters on Google too 😉 We cook differently, we cook more Austrian, more Alpine reaching over the borders (Europe), and we cook more modern, yet honoring the classics, because times have changed, COVID has changed the culinary world, the current cost of living has a dramatic negative impact on all hospitality venues across the country. If we got stuck in the past with blinkers on, we, like many of our colleagues would have to close our doors soon too. We just got a whole beef cattle from our trusted farm. You haven’t had that one before, have you? 400kg of meat, and yes, we’ll have a big fat juicy beef burger on our King Ludwigs menu… now you are probably thinking what a disgrace that is … yet, you might be the only one I am sure 😉 Anyway, thank you again and most possibly not a Auf Wiedersehen. Adi

King Ludwig’s disappointing again. The food was flavorless, the staff had no personality and there was no atmosphere. A great location and amazing concept but just not done cleverly. I mentioned it was a birthday but no acknowledgment when we were there. We wanted schnapps with dessert but no staff were attentive enough to ask. All over in one hour and we left disappointed. Do yourself a favour and look elsewhere in the area to avoid being disappointed.

I had pork medallions with spatzle. The pork was dry, spatzle was rice sized and over salted. Pretzel with cheese dip was pretzel with cream cheese. Not a dip. We have been to king Ludwig’s in the past and we’re so excited to be attending again for our anniversary. We stayed close by do we could enjoy the meal and evening. Did not even ask yo see desert menu. So disappointed. Not offered any water, meal was so over salted I was dying of thirst. I asked for a wine with a glass of ice and was given a glass of ice topped with wine. Will not go back.

Thanks for the review. To firstly discuss over salted food we were having repeated reviews 6-12 months ago regarding this so we toned it down and then we started receiving multiple "bland food" reviews so then we went back in the middle again so this continues to be a challenge for us it seems. As for the Obatza and for the benefit of other readers this recipe has not changed for 20 years and we continue to follow Barbara and Klaus recipe of camembert, cream cheese, carraway and garlic. We have noted the spaetzle comment and are reacting to move away from current production process to move back to using a press for a "larger and longer egg noodle". As for the other issues I can only apologize and offer that you come back again and see that we continue to strive for excellence. Our google reviews continue to attract positive experience comment however recently in trip advisor there appears a trend of negative comment and we challenge the next reader to not be influenced by these recurring comments and dine with a positive mindset rather than expect an experience to mimmick other recent comment.

Poor service, overpriced and inauthentic food in a great location. I visited about 18 months ago and it was excellent. This time the menu is limited and very expensive. The sausages are not much better than hot dogs and soooo overpriced! The beers are excellent but there really isn’t anything to recommend in the menu. Pretty poor example of German cooking. Sad to see it go downhill like that.

Heard about this restaurant from so many people to say it is good. We came away for a weekend to try it for ourselves. Honestly this place did not disappoint. The service was excellent. We pre ordered the pork knuckle and OMG it was so bloody good. We shared one between us, there was Plenty of pork. The desert menu came out and we both could not resist the the amazingly constructed apple strudel. It was served with custard, fresh cream and ice cream.that was the bomb de bomb..

Having been here several years ago, we were really looking forward to an authentic German meal. We both ordered the jagerschnitzel and were disappointed. Two basic veal medallions with gravy, noodles and a mix of steamed vegetables, Not crumbed and more like standard pub food than a German dish. Adequate service but the place really lacked atmosphere. It’s not a destination restaurant anymore.

We wanted a German meal so booked a table for three. We were not disappointed. Fabulous service in a very authentic setting. Tables inside and out. Spectacular views. It is a limited but excellent menu. They offered a specials menu on the day. We opted for the selection os sausages and then shared the apple strudel and a black forest cake. Delicious food, fresh ingredients, large size meals. This restaurant is not cheap so go on a special occasion and have a lot of fun. Highly recommended.

Our host Barbara had a chalk board outside wishing me a happy birthday as my wife and I arrived for light lunch, very personal and thoughtful. We had a great view of the Glasshouse Mts from our verandah table and it was easy to imagine we were in an alpine Bavarian beerhaus. King Ludwig’s is the real deal and some Brisbane schools bring their German classes here to practice their language in a social setting. Their signature starter is potato cream soup, just perfect. Our waiter was very professional and witty. For main I had Berliner Currywurst, wonderful flavours with a Lichtbier, and my wife enjoyed a hearty garden salad. Fortunately we had room left for desserts of Panna Cotta and Sticky Date Pudding and the quality and flavours were memorable.

Quarantine is over, and we had not been to a proper restaurant in almost half a year. Why not this Bavarian restaurant? Well, in a "Wochenend' und Sonnenschein" day when all Queenslanders were out and when we were even prepared to eat mince pies at the petrol station, we found ourselves at the right place and the right time. This was finding the golden needle in the haystack. What a beauty! You know you are in a real Bavarian outlet when you open the door and you are comfortably embraced by that alpine aroma of timber and upholstery, Spätzle in broth, gravy and mustard, Hefe from the bar and Braten from the kitchen. You feel it in your nostrils. You feel it in your soul. Thank you lady boss for last minute accommodations… (you must have been “Barbara”, I suppose). Gorgeous food, sausages, Sauerkraut, Knödel... absolutely impeccable, the real taste - I should say the real GREAT TASTE - of hearty German dishes, steamrolling anything else with German inspirations in the SE-Queensland region. Find a designated driver, as you will be faced with an enviable selection of German top quality beers, including Bamberg’s most excellent Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier. Teutonic service, fast, efficient, with a warm Eurosmile. The atmosphere is super cozy and you just want to lie down on those wooden benches for an afternoon nap. Already planning a return.

This is supposed to be an upmarked restaurant. We thought with new owners we would try again, just out of curiosity. However, upmarket are only the prices. We were not impressed. Not by the mediocre food ( the luke warm pork knuckle had been reheated and the sour kraut was tasteless), not the tacky and slightly grubby interior, and not the annoying attempts of the waiter to up-sell. What one gets for his money is ridiculous.

Have enjoyed the Bavarian hospitality and specialties here over two decades and food was again top class. Place is always buzzing and views from deck over Glasshouse Mountains to the coast are stunning. No longer a la carte so choice of two or three courses for fix price. We had only two courses and very limited drinks and it cost over $250 for three of us. Better value down the road at the Terrace restaurant or the Le Coq Bressan (French restaurant) at Flaxton on the way to Montville.
