Relaxed dining, friendly service & simple food done well. This is our restaurant philosophy with a seasonal menu featuring the flavours from the chargrill. A family-owned business in the heart of the Barossa Valley, we are prominently located in the Main Street of Tanunda. Offering a relaxed & family-friendly environment, you may choose to dine in the comfort of our Dining Room, enjoy the sunshine on our front Terrace or the serenity in our Char Garden out back. We are known to indulge in a fine Barossa wine ourselves and would love to share our recommendations for you to enjoy with your meal from our extensive wine list. We hope to host you soon!

What an amazing restaurant to come across in the heart of Tanunda. Lovely day to sit in the sun on the deck (or ample space inside and even a grassed area out the back). Always on a winner when they happily provide high chairs with kid appropriate food while the adults can enjoy a fantastic wine list and quality food in a restaurant setting. Service was exceptional, no request was to difficult, with all our dietary needs able to be accommodated. Will certainly be back again and again!!

Dined here on a Saturday evening with friends who live locally
We had the twice baked soufflé for an entree and really enjoyed it.
The highlight for my wife and I however was the slow cooked beef rib— the meat was so tender it fell apart and the accompanying vegetables complemented it well.Not a large serve but more than adequate for each of us.Our friends chose differently but also thoroughly enjoyed their dishes.
We finished with panna cotta which was excellent— all food was beautifully presented.
I can’t comment on the wine list as my friend brought some BYO which perfectly complemented the food.
The place is not cheap but I guess you need to be prepared to pay for quality.
We were served by the owner— a cheerful chap who knew his trade and seemed to know most people in the place

Great experience. We have been wanting to try Char for a long time and finally made it.
The service was fantastic, accommodating and friendly. But not over the time. One of the better experiences for service I have experienced Australia wide.
The food was presented very well, and all four of us in our group enjoyed the meals we ordered. The wine list also had a good range to select from. Would definitely recommend Char.

Do not do it to your self, there are better options. We booked this restaurant for a group of 12. 6 out of 12 guests ordered steak. All complained the steak was cold, as were the accompanying vegetables. Of the 2 who ordered lamb, one was inedible and the other was chewy and cold. Most of the group persevered with their meals as we had waited such a long time for them and were quite hungry. One person ordered a burger which was still quite frozen in the middle. We did complain numerous times about our meals and the best the restaurant offered was to take one lamb dish off the bill. In actual fact, most of these meals were not of restaurant quality and we felt ripped off. We paid $800 for barely edible food. The service was slow but I don’t want to blame the young ladies who were doing their best - without any real supervision or direction. I’m not sure who owns this place but they are doing a very poor job! On offer is an expensive meal without service and quality to justify the price.

Main meal itself was made to look pretty but in substance it was poor quality ingredients and entree sized. Pretty much a restaurant scam where the cost to make was low compared to the charge to the customer. I ordered a steak and although it was cooked well the meat itself was old. The steak came with little else other than half a potato. Definately felt I had been scammed after walking out of the restaurant. Service and atmosphere was good not phenomanal.

We are pleased to hear your steak was cooked well and you found our service and atmosphere to be good.
We do feel your choice of words to label our small business as a “scam restaurant” is however, naive.
You may or may not be aware that Australia is currently facing a national shortage in beef, and we pride ourselves very much in sourcing high quality, MSA rated steaks delivered fresh on a weekly basis.
You claim your meal was entree sized but also admit to having a steak. The smallest size steak available on our menu is a 200gram Angus Pure Eye Fillet steak, so we can assure you this amount of protein is acceptable as a main course, and if served as an entree would be very generous!
Our menu states that all steaks are served with kipfler potatoes, slow roasted tomato and red wine jus. A selection of side dishes are available to order to accompany your steak, and are listed directly below the steaks on our menu.
We obviously may not be the restaurant for you in the future, but thank you for your patronage on this occasion. All the best.

Always wanted to try char
Whilst staying in Barossa.
Staff were attentive
I ordered the steak was good but too pricey. (Meat a little cold) shame

Such a fantastic place to dine in the Barossa. The food was cooked to perfection and the service was above the usual standard.
Very family friendly. The croquettes are an absolute must!! Thanks team Char, can’t wait until our next visit 🥰

We had a wonderful experience in this excellent restaurant on a very busy Sunday night. The service was friendly and efficient without being overbearing, and the food was beautifully presented and delicious. We particularly enjoyed the house made potato gnocchi which was delightfully light with a superb sauce and crisp, fresh greens. BYO was a bonus after a day in the wineries.

Dined here for a birthday lunch and all the food was amazing. Three of us had various cuts of steak and they were all cooked just as we ordered - perfection. Also ordered the duck which was delicious. Service was great & looking forward to returning soon.

Great service. Staff knew about menu items and had good knowledge of the wines . The 3 courses we chose were faultless. The proteins were treated with respect and the accompanying vegetables and sauces were full of flavour. The desserts were special too.
Definitely will be back to sample more of the menu.

An unexpectedly good meal tonight at Char, slap bang in the middle of Tanunda and therefore, the middle of the Barossa. I say unexpectedly not because I didn’t think that the food & service would be good, but they were both so much better than I was anticipating.
From the warm greeting as soon as we arrived, to the equally warm farewell, this was a most enjoyable evening.
The decor is excellent, quality but understated. The restaurant was very busy on the Wednesday night but the tables were spaced enough to be more than comfortable and the wonderful staff were all kept busy,including the 2 gentlemen in the open kitchen.
As you would expect given the location, the wine list is extensive but not daunting with a good selection at all price points.
For all of that, the food was the star, and we look forward to our next Barossa visit to enjoy it all again.

Our group of five we unanimous in expressing their complements on the balance of flavours and taste of their individual selections of main courses, particularly the Churrasco Selection which was an overall summary the choices. personally the Lamb Rump was exceptional!
The service could not be faulted, the ambience of the indoors setting was very good, though it was disappointing we couldn't dine outside due to a completely covered area with no direct sun.
We will pass on our recommendation to friends and will return.

Did I just eat the best steak in SA? A big clear yes😀😃😃😃😃😃.
I've been to a lot of restaurants in my time and CHAR rates amongst the best,
The Char chefs are the masters for delivering a perfect cooked steak every time. After 5 visits here, Every steak seems to be better than the last.
As for the service, if there is an award for 'the best table service hostess', Kate wins the award hands down. Absolutely the best service you could possibly ask for.
If you want the best steaks coupled with an array of perfect Barossa and South Australia wines, this is the best place in the Barossa.
You WILL not be disappointed.😉

My husband and I wanted to go for a drive and enjoy the sunshine. We came to Char Barossa for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We felt welcome from the moment we entered.
Staff were excellent. The meals were absolutely mouthwatering and beautifully balanced in flavours - delicious!
I ordered the Pork Belly entree and hubby ordered Steak.
When the world settles again we will return!

A sophisticated vibe at this lovely little restaurant. What a joy to have an interesting menu! We decided to commrnce with local olives and glasses of local riesling and rosé. Spatchcock was juicy and served with a variety of mushrooms and truffle flavoured polenta shards and grilled prosciutto. The service was attentive. Not to be missed.
