On a previous Clare Valley visit we asked around a few people for their thoughts on ‘Terroir’ and they spoke very highly of it. So on this trip time we went for dinner and also stayed in their on site accommodation (which, bless them, they ‘rent’ for single Saturday night stays - wonderful!!!!!). Now it’s my turn to speak just as highly as those encouraging reports that we received and, knowing now that a full restaurant is fed by just a one man band operation in the kitchen (chef Dan), it only serves to increase the praise. Amazing! Same goes for the value - four courses + amuse bouche…..every mouthful a delight, every cent of the $80 set menu was VERY well spent! A lovely touch at the start and finish was to be welcomed on the doorstep by someone opening the door to greet you, and then to farewell you at the end. Really nice. I’m reluctant to try to pinpoint a favourite dish but for someone who isn’t a gnocchi fan I have to specifically mention how delicate and dreamy the blue swimmer crab gnocchi dish was. The gazpacho accompaniment came close to being too much for the crab, but it did NOT tip over the edge. A highly commended balancing act!! Fantastic. Also, thank you for offering the choice between cheese or a sweet dish for the dessert component, rather than making cheese the optional additional paid extra. As a cheese lover I always feel set menus penalise a person if they don’t have a sweet tooth! Just a small suggestion: it might be nice if in-house guests could be allocated tables in the front/window, to show a bit of extra ‘love’, and if the chairs could be a little more comfy as perhaps more ‘French’ looking. These are really small things though….

Delicious and inovative set menu based on local produce. We had the accompanyng wines which were well matched. Friendly staff, the chef came out and spoke to us at the end and his enthusiasm for and knowledge of the local ingredients right down to the locally grown chick peas and lentils was very evident

We stumbled across this restaurant on our way to the Flinders Ranges and what a find. This would be the best regional dining experience we have had. The bead is a must order with citrus butter. The vegetarian entree was so fresh and flavoursome, the crab was next and super fresh, then the pie was sensational. But the highlight was dessert. Cumin and coriander in a dessert can be done with great success and the cheese option is presented under a large house made cracker. We could not fault this gem and look forward to coming back. If you are travelling in a caravan consider the auburn community caravan park, you can walk to the restaurant!

Terroir would be a 3 star in Melbourne, Sydney or Adelaide. The food is seriously good without being pretentious the 4 course degustation menu & matched wines is very good value & quality serving local produce . At $125 a person it is extremely good value. The Chef is the proprietor and has recently become a proud father Booking essential The associated accomodation is very comfortable and pays homage to the 1860s building

We have had a few days in Clare and lucky enough to eat some absolutely amazing food so after many many local recommendations to eat at Terroir (especially for Wednesday's locals night) we did. Upon arriving (and seeing in through the window) I actually looked around the neighbouring buildings because I thought we were in the wrong place. My first impression was it looked like a casual Cafe, I think it was the lighting and particularly the large bright drinks fridge at the end of a service counter. Anyway we went inside and our greeting was warm. I had the brassicas as the entree and it was obviously meant to be served cold and was delicious. For main I had lamb and lentils, while this was not fridge cold it was room temperature at best, I understand the lamb was probably well rested (as it was perfectly cooked) but the lentils were cold. I couldn't easily mention it to staff so ate it anyway. Dessert was semifreddo which was solid.

Our snacks plus 4 course meal with matching wines was sensational. Everything right from the start was inspirational and delicious. Beautifully plated snacks with explanations from our waitress, well timed, with perfect matching wines. When I asked for a menu so I could remember our special evening, Dan the chef signed it and wrote out the snacks next to the four courses. A treasured memento! Expensive but worth every cent😊

Our welcome to Terroir Auburn was excellent. Our waiter, Brendan, was very professional and efficient; meeting our expectations that this appears to be a very good restaurant. The restaurant setting and décor also gave us the impression that this is a restaurant that aims to be serious about food. There were only 3 other couples at the restaurant that night. Our bread roll and small starter were interesting, tasty variations, encouraging us to explore the Chef’s Choice.(4 courses; choice of 2 dishes in each course). The broccolini dish was tasty , as was the fish tart on spiced pumpkin. We could appreciate that thought and time had been put into these dishes. The meat course was very disappointing. We both found the meat very tough, as if there was an excess of gristle. My husband did a lot of chewing to get through most of his small piece. I could not eat any of the meat. Half was ‘chewed’ but the meat would not break up, so placed it back on my plate, and did not attempt the rest. As with the previous dishes, we provided our waiter with this feedback and requested this be passed on to the chef. On delivery of our dessert, our waiter said the chef would see us at the end of our dinner. Dessert was an interesting take on a parfait. The timing of each dish was good. The amount of food was satisfying. The taste sensations, for most dishes, were good. At the conclusion of the meal our waiter said the chef would not be talking to us. He apologised that the meat was not satisfactory, but the chef ordered the same cut of meat and he (we) has to accept what is delivered. Experiencing this feedback , via our waiter, was as disappointing as the meat! Unfortunately, it has tainted our visit to Terroir Auburn. We did pass on this feedback to the restaurant via email (when surveyed the following day for customer feedback). However, no response from the owner/chef.

The food here was very tasty, the dining room is so low key with only a few tables and the service staff were incredibly attentive. The value is excellent when you consider the standards here, my only negative was the selection of beers didn't really match the quality of the food. I think a selection of delicate lighter beers have complimented the food. Make a reservation now!!!!!!!!!!

My partner and I enjoyed a memorable meal at this gem of a restaurant. It is open for dinner 3-4 nights per week and if you are staying in the Clare Valley and enjoy beautifully cooked, fresh food, Terroir Auburn is a must. It is a set menu that allows for dietary requirements. The wine list is very good and service first class. All courses were astonishingly delicious and came in perfect portions. Moreover, for such exceptional quality, the price is very reasonable. Highly recommended!!

My feelings towards Terrior were positive before I even set foot in the restaurant. There was a problem with our booking and Dan contacted me personally, apologised and offered a suitable solution and then thanked me for my understanding. Hence, what could have been a negative experience, was anything but. Seriously, this small thing stands out as a big deal in how things should be handled. On arrival at Terrior, our turning up slightly ahead of schedule was handled smoothly by the polite and attentive servers. The food was excellent from the chilli churro amuse bouche, to the beautifully cooked duck. The bill was very reasonable for the experience. Well done, totally recommend!

Amazing food and service was second to none. The atmosphere is lovely we had the option to sit near the fire place. We had the 4 course wine pairing experience. My partner is gluten free and they accomodated this so well. They even made a special dessert just for him. All the food was amazing. I don't normally eat fish but I can say that they made it so amazing, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The whole meal throughout I could not fault. The chef takes great care and pride in his food, which these days is somewhat rare. The ingredients are fresh because you can taste it! Makes all the difference, so keep up the amazing food and sericve that you do. The host was lovely, with a great sense of humour which just added to the whole experience. One of the best meals we have ever had and so worth the money!

Indulge yourself and try the 4 course tasting menu with matching wine... handing over the controls to the talented Chef and Wait staff paid off. From having the front door opened for you, to the journey the food takes you on, Terroir is a winner. We enjoyed the subtlety and the suprise of ingredients used in unexpected ways. Well done to the Waiters too as, although compact, the number of patrons kept you busy... having said that, time was still spent describing food and enhancing the dining experience. We left full and content.

What a fantastic little restaurant in Auburn! It's an amazing experience where the focus is on local and farm-to-plate dining, where the set menu changes seasonally and is always fresh. We came in late-September and stayed in the on site accommodation, which made dining and sampling the paired wines very easy! The food was amazing, beginning with a selection of snacks, followed by vegetarian, fish and meat courses, and finishing with a delicious dessert. The paired wines were amazing too. Service was great, with good explanations of the food and various ingredients used. The focus is definitely on freshness and quality, and we certainly couldn't fault anything in our whole experience. I look forward to coming back in the future, and sampling a different seasonal menu!

For $75 (without wine pairing) you get a 4 course chef's choice menu. There is an a la carte menu if you don't want to do the tasting menu. There was a free small chickpea churro as an appetizer to start with and then 3 savoury plates (1 vegetarian, 1 fish and 1 meat) and 1 dessert. The slow cooked lamb brick was the probably the pick of the mains. For dessert there was only a choice of cheese or vanilla parfait with honeycomb which made the choice easy. The food was good without being exceptional and for the price very good value. There is not a lot of food but it was enough to satisfy us and we were glad we dined there. The menu does change and local produce is featured. The restaurant/room doesn't have a lot of ambience but the staff were fine.
