About
La Lanterna is the first restaurant in Queensland, Australia, dedicated to the tradition of Ligurian cuisine. As we started trading in 2017 we soon realized how hard it was to find fresh homemade pasta and focaccia, therefore we adjusted out menu and started making everything from scartch. We use many different flours which means we have plenty of Gluten free options. Genovese and Ligurian cuisine are mostly vegetarian. We also provide vegan and dairy free options.

Location is sort of narrow hole in the wall gang just passed the pub and well worth the search. You should book. It was a very busy Thursday and due to covid you need to try for a slot between 6 and 7.30 pm. It...also has a deli open during day. Fabulous staff. Fun and very helpful but not in your face. As this is an Italian style we never tried before was worth asking about the dishes as it is attempts to be very specific to the north west Italy region around Genoa. As such it was culinary tour de force. We had antipasto and it was loaded. Great selection of salamis cheeses olives etc and a surprising fig jam. We scrapped that little jar dry it was so good. Then a surprise for main. Risotto with pears and Gorgonzola topped with fresh walnuts, and beef ragu linguini. With a bottle of Italian red. Was a great choice. Highly recommendedMore

We visited on a very cold Wednesday night in late July. Arrived just before the 6pm opening, the door still closed, but a few staff visible inside appearing busy. But no-one in the streets - the whole neighbourhood seemed very quiet. We wondered if we...would be the only patrons this night... That is not a good feeling at a restaurant. But... At 5:55pm the door sign changed from "closed" to "open", and in we went. And within the next ten minutes all the tables were suddenly full - clearly a popular place! Staff: The waiter was perfect. Friendly and polite and informative. A delight to deal with, and I am someone easily irritated :) The guy behind the counter where I later paid the bill, also very friendly and charismatic. The chef and all the staff appeared happy, professional, great. Food: We ordered the Pizzata focaccia as an entree - maybe I am swayed by my own devout love of tomatoes and capers and anchovies, but this was truly delicious. It came promptly, and also piping hot, which I love. For the main I had the Tagliatelle pasta with the beef ragu sauce. My wife had the Ravioli of the Day which had a fill of various mushrooms and a delicious white sauce that included Italian sausage and truffle oil. Again both served hot. Really very nice. Trying to find fault, I could have had the ragu with some more salt, but I know I like everything salty. Drinks: Being a Wednesday, it was a BYO night (only some days are BYO, and only wines) I love a bottle of red with Italian cuisine, so I took such, and for my wife I took a half-bottle of prosecco. I knew in advance they charge $9 a bottle corkage, but in the final bill they only charged us the one $9 corkage. And upon turning up with our own wine they were just too happy to give me the glasses I wanted. Desert: We couldn't do desert, as between the entree and the main we needed no more, but we ended up deciding to get a take-away lemon tart as they looked so good :) Value: Total cost of the dinner for two: $90. This included the entree at $14, the two mains for a total of $55, the take-away lemon tart for $12, and the $9 corkage. Very good quality for the money, and with the option that night of BYO, I was able to enjoy a bottle of wine that would have cost more at any similar restaurant than the rest of the meal. In my opinion, fantastic value place. Extras: The place is small, but in a cosy, not cramped fashion. Very nicely decorated, clearly much attention paid to the detail. Even though it is snug, it is not loud as is the case in many places. Great atmosphere. Just really pleasant. We really enjoyed our experience there, and I suspect that this was not a one-off fluke. I really think they provide such experiences every night. Well done and thank you!More

Firstly! I would suggest booking your table (even on a Wednesday Night it was quite busy!) The staff from waiters to chefs were engaging, interacting with each table and very accommodating to Dietary needs; Food was absolutely delicious, i felt like i was at my...Italian grandmothers house!! food was fresh and tasted homemade, simply the food was made with love and respect that you just appreciate and enjoy. Portion sizes were bigger then what i thought and staff are accommodating to take away if unable to eat all your meal. Overall amazing experience, will be back very shortly :)More

Today our social-belonging group “The Joys” who are (Just Older Youngsters) visited the VERY BEST Italian Restaurant and Cafe at Redcliffe called “La Lanterna Restaurant and Cafe!” What a fun time we had together today too sharing conversation, funny jokes and tongue-in-cheek (almost) dirty innuendos...lol 😂 .... probably one of the very best meetups we have organised this year... AND I might even go as far to say perhaps THE best meetup we have had this year??! And with two original home-made pastas with pesto and the other with beef ragu .... and cooking as we waited! The antipasto platter was so tasty and fresh and the pasta and spaghetti was so so delicious! The younger guest who is a qualified chef and came along with our group today, has worked with Gordon Ramsey and in a lot of kitchens all over the world and she rated the food and service at 11 out of 10! And at a cost of $25 a head...... amazing! Some people even licked their plate clean.... although I won’t mention any names!!! 😂🙏🏽💯 And the cheese was homemade too... so good that I had to buy some to take home! The coffee is imported directly from Italy! However, most of us were too full to order coffee. Some people did have wine with their food though 😂 Thank you so much Alex the owner for opening up the “La Lanterna Restaurant and Cafe“ especially for our group today! We WILL be back! Next time for a main, dessert, coffee with amaretto biscuit or biscotti!More

Unfortunately it has been a very short visit as we didn't book our table and they only had available a seat for a little longer than one hour. Beautiful atmosphere, lots of people and we also heard Italians, which is always a good sign. Food...is home made and you can taste the freshness. The young waitress seems to know a lot despite her young age. All in all a great experience, it's a shame we're not locals. I'm surprised to read that someone believes their gnocchi are not home made, we had two serves, one with the Sorrento sauce and one with ragu and they were excellent.More

Ordered the gnocchi and it was not hand-made as expected in a restaurant. It was the cheap packaged stuff you buy from any supermarket. Ordered the panna cotta for dessert. The menu description said it came with chocolate ganache. The reality placed before us was...two leathery little panna cottas sprinkled with cheap supermarket bottled chocolate sauce. So we got fake cheap gnocchi, and though ganache isn't Italian, it was still what we expected we were paying for. This place is dishonorable. If I was a Ligurian I would be ashamed.More

You're more than welcome to join us every afternoon Wednesday to Sunday so you can see with your own eyes while we make our gnocchi and pannacotta. Our doors are always open, really.

Lucky for us the Restaurant had a cancellation and we could experience the best dinner ever. From the minute we walked into the Restaurant we felt like we could have been in Italy so authentic. Our Waiter was a greenie and did a wonderful job...for us so professional. Our meals were exactly as was explained to us very scrumptious and fast service. The waiters were very friendly and made us feel very comfortable. Extremely knowledgeable of the food, wine and beer from Italy. We will be back and we will definitely recommend to all of our family and friends that visit the lovely township of Redcliffe.More
