The restaurant is a landmark having been frequented by Coach Jimmy Valvano in the 1980s when he made NC State #1 in Basketball.............His picture abounds in the Tavern inc, the menu but more important David the owner has kept both the food and atmosphere top notch just like Jimmy V......Start with the Potato & Leek soup, there is none better!... We went to celebrate our 37 wedding anniversary. This was our first time visiting and could not have been more pleased. Our server (Savannah) was friendly and attentive. The food was excellent. For an appetizer we had the bruschetta. My wife had the wedge salad and I ate the romaine caesar. We both chose the prime rib, queen sized, with... More

If the restaurant had been busy or anyone had indicated there was an issue in the kitchen, we would have been fine but no service, no communication and open tables leaves no room for the excuses we heard for the slow service and the overdone seared tuna and rubbery overdone scallops. For this alleged top quality eatery, we were more... More

Three of us met for a business dinner and it was suggested that I order the bone in ribeye (“the cowboy”). WOW! First, it is the biggest steak that any restaurant has ever severed me. It was absolutely huge. Second, it was absolutely wonderful tasting. The outside was seared with a slight char and had that crusty caramelization that is... More

I admired Jimmy Valvano and since this restaurant was named in his honor I have always enjoyed coming here. Sadly Coach Valvano died on my birthday in 1993 so I think of him often during my celebrations. I ordered a New York Strip and it was grilled to perfection. The service was friendly and attentive. Excellent choice for dinner.

This is probably the classiest place around Cary, with wood paneled walls, spectacular wine and liquor selection - oh yes, and the BEST steaks ever, cooked exactly as ordered. Did I mention the onion rings - best I've ever had. Service is impeccable and everything held to the highest standards although you will pay a price that is well above... More

Attentive service in old-school dining environment. Meal was pricey, but very, very good. Rib-eye cooked perfectly (and server asked my husband to cut into it to be sure it was cooked exactly as ordered), salmon with caprese salad excellent, kids had lobster bisque and mac & cheese with bacon (it was an elegant presentation for such a simple dish) and... Visited Jimmy V's while in Raleigh to attend NCAA tournament out of reverence to Jimmy V and his legacy. Nice experience in a suburban shopping/dining center, which I didn't expect. Atmosphere is what's old school, it's a little tired and could use some refreshing. Service was excellent, both at the friendly bar and in the dining room. Food portions were... More
