Welp... you know how cows continuously chew their food for hours, days, weeks... well, you could say that Cattle Barons is punishment for killing that cow... you will be chewing your steak for days like bubble gum... Place is great if you enjoy rubber...

Service was good. The food was the exact opposite. Steak was served cold and it gets better as it was tough as shoe leather. I will never got to Cattle Barron or any of the parent establishments. I had eaten at Cattle Baron in the past but it has been years since I lived in the area. The food was... More

Ate here with family. Very good salad bar. The selection of steaks and meat is all boneless...no T-bones etc. Though my steak was prepared to order, pretty flavorless. The baked sweet potato was huge and very good. Overall, pretty standard.

Absolutely the best Salad bar in New Mexico! Steak perfectly cooked-Shrimp deliscious and the bread is oh soooo good! Service was top-notch! Quick, friendly and just a great experience! Just look at these luscious pics!

Just left the Cattle Baron. The steak and baked potato were terrible. The baked potato was so cold it didn't melt soft butter. The steak flavor was marginal at best. The service was was slow, it took 10 minutes to get a ticket. I won't be back!

The cattle baron once a high end eatery is now little more than a diner. The food is adequate, but nothing like it used to be. The ambiance is gone and I would compare to a medium level chain restaurant with a large salad bar.

Whenever my travels brings me to the area (typically Clovis) I always try to make a run to Portales to go the the Cattle Barron. This place has excellent steaks, service is always good. A great place to stop if you are in the area. Once of the best in Portales and Clovis.

A good place to go for a decent meal. The salad bar has a good variety of options, including soup and dessert items. You can order drinks or draft beer and they pretty much have something for everyone on the menu, although vegetarian options are limited. Staff is always friendly.

I am from Albuquerque but I am a big fan of Cattle Baron. There are just a couple Cattle Baron's in New Mexico and whenever I visit a town or city with a Cattle Baron it is always my first stop. I love a good salad bar with everything. My family enjoys the steaks. This restaurant has something for everyone.

Stopped here on our way to Roswell. We were seated in the bar area. It was a slower time in that part of the restaurant so it was quiet and enjoyable. The service was great, liked the salad bar, and our food was excellent.

Small Town Burger Rivals Any Big City…

In LA or NY I would expect to pay $15+ for this quality of burger. Not so in the little dairy and peanut capital of Portales, New Mexico. We were passing through on business and stopped by the Cattle Baron for lunch. I ordered their Rio Grande burger with green chile and Monterey jack cheese. Flavorful, quality hand-formed beef. This is not a manufactured pressed patty. I like mine well done and it was still mouth watering tender delicious beef on a fresh baked roll. The green chile was not overpowering, the cheese was perfectly melted and quite a thick cut. I pushed the tomato, onions and lettuce to the side and let the trio of beef, chile and cheese make my day. We were told there are a few Cattle Baron restaurants in surrounding areas and I believe also Lubbock, TX (check their website for locations.) Next time we drop in we want to try the ribeye, but one of us will definitely order the Rio Grande – what a fantastic surprise to stumble upon! P.S. order the fries extra crispy, ours were good but a little limp.
