I don't go often, but when I want a really good fish & chips fix, this is where I head. I have never had a bad meal here, the fish is fresh and thick and cooked perfectly. Even the pot of tea I got afterwards was spot-on.

The menu is always great, simple and executed to perfection. The owners and staff don't just treat you like customers - they treat you like family.

Whenever my family returned to NJ for a family visit, we'd make a trek to the Thistle when it was in Kearny. My uncles and aunts and grandparents ate here. My pops would meet old Kearny buddies here. I remember, as a boy looking up at these men as if they were royalty. Now we make the trip to Lyndhurst... More

Many people still observe Friday as fish day. For a really good fish dinner, Thistle Restaurant is a great place. You can get both take out and dine in service. It is also a BYOB restaurant. The food is exceptional and the serve staff is attentive and personable. The dining room is small accommodating about 40. The food is prepared... More

If you like Scottish style fish & Chips then this is for you! Formerly located in Kearny, NJ they relocated a few years ago to this new spot. It's a bring your own restaurant and besides the fish & chips they have an extensive sea food menu and great chowder, both New England & Manhattan!

I had a hankering for fried fish and the Thistle did not disappoint. I ordered the children's portion for lunch. It was a thick piece of cod, batter dipped, fried to a perfect golden brown with just enough fries to make a meal. I don't think I could have eaten more than that so was glad not to have ordered... Formerly in Kearny, NJ. Family owned for three generations. Fish & Chips, Shrimp Scampi, Sausage Soup. Very good food and excellent service. Somewhat pricey but still reasonable. Reservations needed for Friday and Saturday nights. Highly recommended for couples and families. Takeout is also available. Bring your own wine.

Drive a good distance together there. Was NOT disappointed.the fish was complimented by the breaking not drowned by it. I am not a cole slaw lover, but really wanted a container for home. Tarter was really good. Didn't mask the fish, complimented it. Home made deserts very good too! Plan to bring others on a "Road Trip"

As any Brit expat knows, it is hard to get decent fish and chips in the US. The Thistle is one of the few places that get it right. It is an unassuming little restaurant on a side street in Lyndhurst, NJ run by the same family for three generations. It is worth the trip.

My wife and I have been dining at Thistle's Lyndhurst location since it opened, and we have yet to be disappointed. This small but quaint family owned restaurant, focuses on fried fish in the "old time" Scottish tradition. The menu offers a variety of fried and broiled seafood entrees along with several Scottish classics, supplemented with daily specials. They also... More
