Eating at the Oar House outside on the river with an amazing view over into Maine is an experience. The fact that the food is amazing is just bonus! We ate here on a family vacation and loved our experience. I definitely recommend eating outside to get the full atmosphere. The lobster mac and cheese was spot on delicious and... More

great food and drink. They have great oysters and drinks. Bar always bussy and looks to be local traffic. It is a little expensive but worth the money.

As a group of 4 we took advantage of a lovely sunny day to sit outside. I wish I could remember what the others had. I know it was good but I was focused on the scallops. I ordered an entree size just to see what they were like and once enjoyed ordered another plate. They were the best scallops... More

After the holiday and looking for a quiet warm place to meet and greet friends...this is the place. With charm galore, this wonderful restaurant has an ambience not found in many restaurants...especially in winter. The cozy feel and wonderful food fit the event perfectly. Fresh fish, salads, soups...exactly what is needed on a cold winter day. However, this is also... More

Dined here for first time today. Ceres Avenue is really alley-like; might be difficult to find on a first visit; trust your GPS device and make a first pass and drive by the restaurant (it will be on your left); immediately on your right will be free parking for 20-30 cars exclusively for The Oar; worth a try. If full,... More

One reason that we return to the Oar House is the fact that they have valet parking which makes things easier in Portsmouth. Their onion soup is some of the best that I've ever had. I also had the tuna which was outstanding. Another person in our party had the salmon which she said was fabulous and another the duck... More

Portsmouth is known for great restaurants, and the Oar House is certainly in the top ten. We love the bouillabaisse but suggest ordering the crostini without the garlic and red pepper tapenade as it is just too heavy for the delicate flavors of the meal. Do not leave without trying the goat milk cheesecake. It is wondrous ! Service is... More

We were pleasantly surprised with thanksgiving dinner. It was excellent. The portions were quite large and most guest were leaving with the other half of the meal they couldn't eat. This is by far the most traditional New England thanksgiving dinner we've had at a restaurant. Very organized. The man who hosted worked so hard. Mary was efficient. Delicious.

We chose this restaurant for our Thanksgiving lunch. Our server, Carly, was great even though she was really rushing around because of a full restaurant. Two of us had the traditional turkey meal, one has the lobster and another the baked haddock. The haddock dish was very underwhelming, compared to the other meals ordered and will not be a repeat... We were pleasant surprised with thanksgiving diner at the Oar House. The diner was excellent with the best House made cranberry sauce set this meal in high gear. The portions were quite large and most guest were leaving with the other half of the meal they couldn't eat. The baked sweet potato with brown sugar & walnuts pared extremely well.... More
