A great setting, even on a day full of rain. Glad we managed to snag a late lunch booking here the night before. We arrived early in order to do some wine tasting - as recommended by a staff member at Morries. It’s great value - costs $10 per head (as many as you care for), which is waived on any wine purchase. So, we were happy to pay $30 for a bottle of wine that we both enjoyed, and it really only cost us $10 - winning! They are only open for lunches, although they are long hours. At the moment, a degustation lunch is the only option, with 5 courses of paired tapa style dishes, which will set you back $70pp. The courses were all very tasty, beautifully presented, featuring fresh WA produce and an abundance of textures. Wine pairing is available for an additional $45pp, which we opt out of, after a full on night before. Service is very friendly, helpful and personal, and as we booked online, we mentioned that we were celebrating a wedding anniversary, and that was acknowledged on one of the plates. Too many stand out dishes to mention them all, but the cheeseboard was especially delicious and generous.

Rustico have partnered with Hay Shed winery in Margaret River region of Western Australia and has a good reputation for the atmosphere, quality of food, matched wine and service. As a birthday treat for friends we decided to try out Rustico, we were not disappointed. The degustation menu and food was superb and matched wines delightful. The meal was spread out over 3 hours and the staff were patient and attentive allowing gaps between courses before serving up the next course. Rustico rightly deserves the reputation it’s achieved. Tip, you need to book several weeks in advance to get a table. Worth the weight

We just enjoyed a fabulous long lunch at Rustico. It’s rare now a days to go to a restaurant and enjoy 3 and half hours of delicious morsels being delivered to your table. Degustations usually denote $$$$$$ but at $69 a head (without wine) for 12 courses, we were very happy. Because there were 14 of us, the usual choice of 2 dishes per 6 courses was waived and we were bought a sample of all 12 dishes. Sublime setting, amazing staff, Megan was fantastic. Hay shed hill is great for kids, take your cricket set, bocce balls, footy, and let them run wild, call them in for a taste of a plate then send them on their way again. Delightful afternoon. Thanks Megan and the Rustico team, I am writing this review whilst gazing at the beach in a food coma!

The six of us had ordered the degustation and would have to say we were quite disappointed on the way our food was served. The portions where quite small and undividable. It seems that way food served it perhaps suits 2, 4, and 8 people but not 6,as we had difficulty to divide some of the servings especially when it come to the desert. As how could you serve 2 small tarts and one crème Brule and expect 3 people to share. Especially now we have such a hygiene issue in the whole country. We have asked the staff to see if they could assist dividing the small even number portions to odd numbers and they got quite defensive. Stating that they have provided everyone to share the same amount. Overall we (the six of us) have spent over $ 600.00 and I don’t think I would recommend any of our friend to visit. 

Hi Venture 230387, I'm extremely disappointed to read this 1 star review, sorry that you didn't enjoy your experience here. Our Dessert Tasting Plate has been on our menu since we opened as we are trying to give our customers a variety of tastes to finish their 5 courses. We understand that this doesn't always seem perfectly divisible when sharing between an odd amount of people. When you pointed this out to me, I did organise an extra dessert tasting plate so you could share between 2 rather than 3. We have taken your feedback on board and discussed this with the management team. We are now looking at eliminating the dessert tasting plate and serving individual desserts as a nice little touch after 4 courses of shared food. If you would like to elaborate on the disappointment of service which was in your heading, I would love to hear from you and correct the problems. My direct contact is johnbarnes.rustico@gmail.com. Kind Regards, John Barnes Restaurant Manager

Decided to visit for our first wedding anniversary. Made online booking wrote in request nice table with view and 1st year wedding anniversary celebration. Further rang twice to confirm booking and discuss anniversary if anything special can be done. They mention that they usually bring our dessert with sparklers and will seat us at the front with a view. It was a surprise for my husband as I wanted to give him his gift then. Great all set. Arrived. Was sat next to the kitchen with clanking plates. Saw tables at the front with a view empty and I had the last seating slot for the day. I then went up to our server and reminded her of the sparklers for dessert. Seeing that there was celebrations left, right and centre I thought great. But seeing that they messed the seating I thought it best to let our server know and remind them of the sparkles with dessert that was suggested over the phone. They forgot at the end dessert came waited, waited then NOTHING! When I paid I asked to speak to the manager and he mentioned that they had other people's celebration too and was busy. Wow! Your one 1 year wedding anniversary only comes once! To equate you with everyone else is poor taste. I would not have written this if there was any sincerity. I then had to let my husband know the beyond acceptable mess up and he agreed that if you went the effort to remind people several times and went the extra mile to remind them even on the day is pathetic for the service industry. I decided to wait 2 months to write this and seeing that I am dissapointed with the reply from the manager and the number of times I reminded them - very poor experience. Good first 3 courses good, after that average. we had wine pains and your paired wine was more of an after thought. Twice the matched wine was brought out when the meal was 70% finished.

Hi Mcgill555, I'm extremely disappointed to read this 1 star review and I am so very sorry that you didn't enjoy your experience here. I completely understand your disappointment in not receiving a special dessert plate especially after specifically requesting one. This is a service we try to offer to all special occasions and I would like to assure you that we have put procedures in place to ensure this doesn’t happen again. It also seems that we completely dropped the ball in regards to your table throughout the day. This as you can imagine the complete opposite of what we want for any table, especially those that are celebrating such a special occasion. I cannot apologise enough for the lack of service you received but would like to reach out to you personally to see if we can perhaps redeem ourselves. If you could contact me directly, Jamesphilpott.rustico@gmail.com I would really like the opportunity to see how we can make amends, perhaps by treating you to a special second Anniversary. Had a beautiful meal ...BUT On arriving into the cellar door we were asked to pay a tasting fee of $10 per head, which would have been refunded if we purchased a bottle . I understand that wineries may need to charge a small fee and I wouldn't bork at $3-5, but wouldnt it be more beneficial to allow restaurant patrons to try free of charge as I'm sure they will be purchasing drinks / wine with their meal. I presume the restaurant and cellar door are owned by 2 separate companies and this is why this might happen. Team work is the key here ! We did actually end up drinking 2 bottles of the chardonnay with our lunch and later that evening ended up at our local bottle shop to purchase two more bottles . The sale could have been there's.

Totally worth the five star reviews. Stopped for wine tasting and then lunch. Went for the 6 course degustation menu. Scallops to start on cauliflower purée good quality and well cooked. Next goats cheese deep fried with warm honey. Next salmon to die for. Then beef carpaccio with manchego cheese. Then paella good quality seafood but rice a bit watery and no crust. Still tasty though. And then a dessert share plate.OMG!! To die for. Consisted of small lemon tart, coffee mouse, fudge brownie, and pannacotta. Fantastic staff and lovely wines. A little warm outside shame they can’t come up with some cooling. But heh well worth a bit of discomfort. Top quality chef who knows his stuff. Thank you Hayshed can’t wait to come back.

We called here to taste some wines and we were tempted to try the cafe. We had a lovely meal of various items of the tapas menu which were extremely filling accompanies by wine from the vineyard. The service was excellent, particularly from a friendly and helpful young lady called Tersha who was very pleasant and gave us some guidance on the menu. Thoroughly recommended.

So delighted to review this sensational tapas restaurant. Service was impeccable and food sublime. We were thrilled to access a last minute booking and were warmly greeted by the most gorgeous staff. The full degustation menu was on offer and looked fabulous but we opted to select a few options a la a carte. The tempura prawns were light and delicious, charred broccoli was tender but the star of the day was undoubtedly the pork. Crisp and crunchy crackling on succulent pork belly was to die for. The Malbec was a perfect match. Super generous serving sizing didn’t hold us back from dessert which was also yummy. I couldn’t fault this outstanding restaurant and highly recommend lovers of good food and wine to visit when in the Region.

This was our third visit to Rustico at Hay Shed Hill. The two previous occasions were wonderful, but this visit even managed to supersede the previous visits. It is so relaxed and lacking in any pretension, the food is faultless and delicious and the service is friendly, warm and welcoming. The wines are amazing. We had the degustation menu again. Previously, we had to make a choice between the two offerings with each course but now you get to taste BOTH!!!( oh my goodness!👏👏👏) I have been gluten intolerant for the last 18 mths, and most good restaurants do provide gluten free options which is great, but I have never experienced a restaurant that has gone out of their way to ensure that I did not miss out on the full gastronomic experience to this extent before! It is so appreciated! The waitress. who was Spanish, was so friendly and enthusiastic about the food and the wine. What a fantastic lunch!!! A party of four women who were walking to their car at the same time as us remarked among themselves about how amazing their lunch was and how accommodating everyone was! We also bought the amazing Block 6 Chardonnay that was on the menu and the Riesling that accompanied our final course. Absolutely sublime!

OMG my taste buds could not stop doing somersaults. Currently they only have the 5 course degustation on offer for $70. It was so worth it. Each dish was delicious. The flavours amazing. The quality of the food was impressive - the scallops and beef cheeks simply melted in your mouth. And the desserts were to die for. Service was too class too. Make the effort to at least experience it once.

This place is not only dog friendly, but they really love dogs! They have a doggy comfort station on arrival with blankets and treats etc. When I rang to make a booking they shuffled things around to allow us to sit on the deck with our dog, while we enjoyed the five-course (which is actually 10 courses) degustation menu. Both the food and service was absolutely outstanding and we’ll definitely be back the next time we’re in town!

We decided to treat ourselves for our wedding anniversary by going to Rustico for the 5 course degustation ($70) paired with wines ($45 additional) for lunch. The food was incredible and served as shared tapas style courses so you don’t have to pick anything just enjoy! For the price the food was great value for what you got and we left happily full and delighted by the beautiful food. The wine pairing however was not such great value in my opinion, I wish we had instead just ordered drinks as we went or shared a bottle. This could be partly due to the fact we actually missed out on one of the paired wines (Malbec), I’m sure if we had spoken up they would have rectified it for us but neither my husband or I feel comfortable doing that so that’s on us.

Rustico has always been one of my favourite restaurants in Margaret River and the first place I book when visiting the area, however on this occasion it appears things are slipping or they are extending themselves to much. The food was pretty much as excellent as always, except neither of us could eat the beef cheeks, something just wasn't right and the mushrooms were too rich. The worst part was the service, or lack of. No explanations on any of the courses (very unusual) but the worst part was how long it all took. We were there for over 2 1/2 hours and that was without the final course as we had had enough and took it to go. It started out well but then came to an abrupt halt and larger tables that had arrived well after us were getting their meals before us. It appears they slowed us down to get all the courses coming out at the same time. We also noticed other tables getting their courses in the wrong order, so maybe it was just a bad day in the kitchen. The most disappointing part was our lack of enthusiasm as the wait continued and it took all the enjoyment out of the experience. We just wanted to leave. No apologies, the overall care factor was quite low and I am not sure how I feel about returning anytime soon.

Hi Places2golots2see, I am so sorry to hear that you had a less than stellar Rustico experience and that you still gave us a 4 star review was very generous. When I read that you didn't enjoy the 4th course of your degustation (beef and mushrooms) I was very disappointed as these are two of our most popular dishes. We generally recommend allowing 2.5 - 3 hours to get through the degustation and it sounds like this was not communicated to you by your waitperson, this has been addressed and we have put procedures in place to ensure it doesn't happen again. I was also disappointed to read that there were no explanations of the dishes as we like to make a point that every plate of food that is served comes with a description of the dish, I will definitely be following up on this. Regarding the abrupt halt to food service, I do apologise it does sound like we tried to sync you table up with the others and for this I do apologise but as we are serving all guests the same menu it helps us out in terms of service if we do this. This should have been communicated to your table and it clearly wasn't, I will be addressing this with the staff to ensure that we continually have open communications with all of our guests. The most upsetting thing in your review was the comment about the lack of enthusiasm from the staff, we strive to give our guests an experience they look back on fondly and the service is a huge part of that. I can not apologise enough for this and I would like to ensure you that this will be discussed with the whole team. I really hope that you will give us another chance to show you how amazing a Rustico dining experience can be!
