Our first, but certainly not last, visit here. No Connecticut Ave signage, so look for address on the building. Parking on the side entrance--there are small signs. Service was very good. Prices are very reasonable. We started with the smoked salmon salad and the artichoke/sausage...More

We wanted to meet old friends but introduce a new couple to Tavira. We always enjoy the meals there and the staff is always most hospitable. Our friends who visited for the first time thought that it was a terrific restaurant. We all had one...More

We had the three course introduction to Portuguese food as recommended by several restaurant reviewers. It was ordinary, not exciting. One of us had the salted sardine appetizer, which was excellent. The other had the mussels, which were OK. Tomato broth holding the mussels was...More

Ben and Mrs Too drove out to Tavira for lunch last Friday and for Ben, it was a genuine epiphany. First, we always start out at our two favorite Mediterranean restaurants by vowing not to eat the whole basket of fabulous bread and spoil our...More

Excellent service, great recommendation on the Vinho Verde. We both had an appetizer from the daily specials that were fine...the artichokes were presented as hearts in a warm oily broth with bacon. Pleasant but too much oil. The baked cod and grilled trout were very...More

I hesitated to rate Tavira a 5, simply because it was the first time we ate there. If our future visits are as nice as the first, I would upgrade the rating. It is not a 5-star Parisian affair, but pretty excellent in all categories,...More

We have been at this restaurant before but our recent experience was a slight disappointment. Let me start with the positives. First, the main courses have always been excellent. The osso buco special was great! The risotto nicely paired with the earthy and generous meat....More

This is a terrific dining spot in Chevy Chase, MD (on Conn. Ave., just north of DC line). The FOOD, SERVICE, ATMOSPHERE, and prices are GREAT! The menu is fairly extensive, and there are appetizers/salads/soups, along with specials, pre-fixe, entrees, pasta, and desserts. Plenty to...More

Tavira has a lot going for it - free nighttime indoor parking, a large dinner menu with daily specials, a fine, moderately priced wine list and great service. Four of us dined there on a recent Sunday night and the dinners included hake (cod) and...More

This Portuguese and Mediterranean restaurant in the heart of Chevy Chase is a jewel. The décor takes one to the Europe with the spices of the Middle East. The food is great, everything taste delicious, the cod fish is fresh, and the salmon is wild....More

There's no "outside patio seating" per se as the restaurant is on the lower level. But there is a separate section across from the bar that gives the impression of patio seating. Reservations are easy and if you don't see... More

Duarte Rebolo was born in Madeira Island, Portugal, a popular European tourist spot. His career in restaurant service began there and so far has spanned about 25 years. He left Madeira to work for Celebrity Cruise Lines. It was here that he worked with world renowned Grand Chef Michel Roux. It was here that he met his wife Linda, and decided to move to the Washington area. While here in Washington, he worked at The Water Gate Hotel with Jean Louis Pallidin until Jean Louis Left. At this point the Pallidin became Aquarelle and the Chef was Robert Weidemaier. Duarte continued to work at The Watergate until his dream of opening his own restaurant came true. Tavira opened in November of 1999. The cuisine is primarily traditional Portuguese, as well as Mediterranean dishes. It has been given favorable reviews from the Washington Post, Washington Diplomat, The Gazette, Bethesda Magazine and Washingtonian Magazine 100 Very Best Restaurants. Duarte's professionalism, attention to detail and hard work will make you Dining experience a deligtful virtual escape to Portugal
