I had not been to Slates in several years, but it definitely was not as I had remembered it. Probably there are many reasons for this....change in ownership? Location? The restaurant was certainly busy and obviously satisfied others. I found the menu to be a little fussy. I would have loved some simple grilled swordfish of plain fish chowder....but, obviously,... Slates definitely has a different feel with the new place. The old was much more charming and had a better atmosphere. As far as the food goes it just doesn't taste the same. I had many awesome meals in the old building! I was very disappointed with the over cooked carrots, charred as they should be but not burnt, the... More

Our group of 10 enjoyed a dinner here. They got a table together for us on short notice. Our server, Jane, was amazing. She was super efficient, friendly and answered all our questions about menu items. The menu is extensive including tapas, entrees, and pizza. The specials of the day add another dimension to endless choices. I enjoyed my field... More

All kinds of good yummy food. A cup of the seafood chowder was very full of good fish. The broth was thinner than I usually like, but it had such a wonderful taste that I didn't mind. I had a hard time deciding what salad to order as they all sounded yummy. The one I did choose had a soft... More

I have not liked the new Slate's location because of how small it is, but New Years Day was the last straw. We had reservations but as soon as we walked in, we were standing in a cramped space with other people waiting for a table. The poor couple at the table behind us was surrounded by standing people...after standing... More

"Homemade pasta" sounded appealing, but when it arrived, the tomatoes were unripe and mealy and didn't have much flavor. The pesto on the other pasta dish was brown and did not taste much like fresh pesto, as it was described. Will not be returning to this restaurant. Service was good and friendly. Overpriced and low quality food. Would not recommend.

I met a friend for happy hour (3:30-6:00). It is the first time I have been in the new location that they moved into next door. Great, funky, friendly ambiance like it USED to be before the fire, for any "old-timers!" We sat at the downstairs blue bar where we could view the open kitchen and enjoyed $5.00 martinis and... This old Agusta Area favorite has downsized but has maintained it's standards for home made food with a contemporary flare. We stoped by on late Friday afternoon and enjoyed crab cakes (delicious), a hefty burger(cooked to perfection) warm brie with apples, grapes and french bread (a great starter to share) and a couple of salids with grilled chicken. Because it... More

About once a month I get together with my best friend (who lives a couple hours away) of over 35 years and we almost choose Slates as our culinary destination. It is located about half way between our homes - Portland and Mercer, ME, but more than that the restaurant has always been able to accommodate us and hosted a... More

A friend praised the mussels at Slates. We tried them and were not disappointed! Simply prepared and very tender. Salads and blueberry pie were good, too. Service was a tad slow, but there was live music so the wait was OK.
