PLEASE NOTE: ADVANCE BOOKING is STRICTLY NECESSARY, minimum 1 day ahead. 'Cooking after booking' is our motto: we are not a normal restaurant but a beautiful private villa. Our ONLY and highly appreciated menu is our RIJSTTAFEL (rice table), with about 10 different Javanese dishes. Feel the Food and the Experience

Choose this place because it is on the top of the list for Kasihan area. Ordered The Sawah Indonesian rijstafel dinner (curently they only serving this menu). Must reserve your table. Only opens for dinner and can acomodate 10-20 pax. Cash only, home cooked meals made according to the fresh produce of the day. Eat in the terrace and listening to a variety of real toads croaking and crickets chirping. Nice. Start with a savory Soto ayam. And then came out the flavorful nasi kuning, oseng tempe, sayur lodeh, perkedel jagung, opor tahu tempe, rendang and sate ayam. And for dessert we got Nagasari, a traditional snack with Wedang Uwuh. A very nice experience.

Delicious variety of Indonesian dishes

We booked in advance for two people and were welcomed by the Wim. He was very hospitable and we had good conversations with him. The food was absolutely lovely. Because it was so delicious we took the left overs with us as a doggy bag :). We recommend anyone to come here and enjoy the good food and see the nice house the owners live in!

Just outside Yogyakarta - sublime experience!

Eating rijsttafel at a mixed Dutch-Indonesian home? After a week in Java we were curious to eat and share experiences with the hosts of this great home/restaurant. All expectations met: delicious food (best Indonesian food this vacation!) and interesting conversation with Wim. As a former news correspondent, he has many stories, knowledge and reflections to offer on Indonesia, Europe, political and cultural issues. Magic evening, don’t miss if you like good food, culture/politics and the ambiance of a really cool house/villa!

A great experience

We had a great evening at Wim’s and Philips. The house & garden, the food, the conversation; it was all amazing. We set a goal for ourselves to finish half of the dishes, but we didn’t even come near. Wim gave us an extensive tour of the house, and had some great stories with it. It’s a little out of the city center, but definitely worth the trip. Don’t miss this great experience!

A magical birthday dinner and an excellent stay with our wonderful hosts Wim and Phillip.

TheSawah is not only a wonderful place to have dinner, it is a unique Airbnb as well. Our arrival day happened to be my birthday and our hosts Wim and Phillip surprised us with a copious and delicious Indonesian rijsttafel that was rounded off with a delicious birthday cake, a very nice touch. I live in Amsterdam where there’s plenty of places to have a decent rijsttafel, but this one was special. Like eating at your friend’s place. The ambiance is wonderful. TheSawah has a wonderfully and tastefully decorated dinner room, but we opted for an al fresco dinner next to the beautiful pond. We have stayed with Wim and Phillip for a week and our time in the Yogyakarta area couldn’t have been better. Their guest room, equipped with a comfy queen size bed and a private semi open air bathroom is not big but more than adequate, and since you can call the rest of their beautiful place your home it’s actually huge. The accommodation comes with a wonderful Indonesian style breakfast, which can be substituted by a western one upon request. Wim is a terrific and enthusiastic tour guide who can tell you tons of stories about the region and its history. We did 2 tours with him and saw lots of exciting places, many of them hidden gems away from the typical tourist spots. Our driver on all tours was Wim’s recommended Sutarman, a very pleasant and friendly driver who got us to all the spots safely and comfortably. This was my first and certainly not last visit to Indonesia. Thanks to Wim,Phillip and their wonderful TheSawah with their friendly and helpful staff it has become a truly memorable one! Needless to say I can highly recommend theSawah, both for dinner and accommodation! You won’t regret it.

A nice place to experience the Indonesian Rijstafel in a tranquilant setting. We had dinner on New Years eve, and it was only us and one other couple. The food was plenty and very tasty. The service was a bit slow at times - waited for one hour to get the dessert - but the setting is nice, so we did not mind it that much.

Hello SusaMasa & partner, Just today I read your review above. Did not appear in my timeline before. Thanks for your nice review regarding place and food! We were not home when you visited but can sincerely state: the service is never slow. It depends completely on the guest when they want their dessert. Since the main dish is HUGE we let the guests take it peacefully. The bell on the table should have been there to call our staff for the desert. I think it was a misunderstanding. Erwan may have waited too long - thinking that you were not ready yet. Sorry about that! Wim

So much food!

Enjoyed our dinner here, went here after seeing it was number 1 on TripAdvisor and we were not disappointed. We were the only two guests, the setting was homely and peaceful. The soto ayam was a highlight, one of the best soups we have ever had. Come hungry as you will be given a ridiculously huge amount of food-all of it was delicious. We were not a massive fan of the desert, steamed flour thing with banana but we do usually find that Southeast Asian deserts are not our thing. Trip from Yogyakarta centre took around 45 minutes, it is worth the trip.

Even on a rain-soaked evening, our meal at The Sawah was amazing and Wim was a wonderful host. The food was delicious and was a fantastic way to sample a number of different Indonesian dishes all at once. It's a perfect introduction to Indonesian cuisine in a beautiful setting.

Great birthday lunch!

What a fantastic place this is. A little adventure (get a Grab Taxi) out of town and you arrive in a lovely family house. The food was fresh, very authentic and full of taste. Wim was our kind host and was delightful company giving us a rich insight into the country, its people and politics. What a memorable afternoon. Thank you.

Lovely unique lunch place

We were perfectly hosted by Wim and his extended family in this unique restaurant. Food was perfect, setting was beautiful and it was well worth the short taxi ride out of the main city. We definitely recommend you make a special effort to visit The Sawah. We are so glad we did! Thank you Wim for making a birthday treat even more special :-).

Our dinner at The Sawah was a memorable and satisfying one! Win being an exceptional host who manages to engages with all his guests whom he has over for dinner from all over the World The meal we enjoyed was delicious one which left us having to adjust our belts! We’ve just had the most fabulous meal at The Sawah. This isn’t the first time I’ve eaten rijstaffel but this surely is the best! The setting too is lovely and we enjoyed the elegant surroundings. Thank you!

The Indonesian rijsttafel , all is great Just like mom's cooking , the atmosphere is feel like home surrounding in family dinner I would like to suggest , could be more complete fantastic if Kerupuk and Sambal including too 🤣🤣
