We went here in December for my husband's birthday. The service was exceptional and the food and wine was plentiful and extremely tasty. Go hungry - you will be full by the end. We also added the duck on at my husband's request. This was a real treat for us, we only splurge a couple of times a year on something like this and felt like the team were good at giving us space, handling the timing of dishes and ensuring we had a good rundown of the dishes as they came.

We were a group of six who enjoyed the degustation menu which comprised 11 courses in all plus bread at $195 per person. The 11 courses included four bite sized starters (smoked eel croissant, pecorino doughnut, eggplant and yoghurt tart and Pai tea with Tuna), three entrees (Red emperor, kangaroo tartare and Spencer Gulf squid), two mains (Spanish Mackerel and Borrowdale pork loin) and two desserts (Mead vinegar custard with raspberry and strawberry and goat's milk yoghurt parfait with rhubarb). Most of the dishes were thoroughly enjoyed by all and appreciated for their creativeness. There were though a couple of misses across the group. Wine and drinks menu was extensive and expensive. Negroni's for instance were $23 each and there were substantially more bottles of wine over $100 and substantially above this amount than there were below $100. The wine list included bottles sourced locally as well as from France and Italy amongst others. Service was quite formal although the explanations of some of the dishes were missed as some waiters raced through them. Pleased that we came again, our last visit with the same people was a few years prior, but at over $540 per couple before a tip we will not be rushing back.

Restaurants such as Sixpenny are not simply “dinner”, we consider them an experience. These experiences are a hobby and this one did not disappoint. Perfectly matched wines to delightful culinary creations. From natural Sydney rock oysters with house made blackberry vinaigrette to squid with peas and beef with a jus to die for. Lets not forget dessert!! Your at the point where you can eat no more but just can’t leave it - well that’s Sixpenny. Always go for the paired wines for the holistic experience.

This is a very average restaurant. The main thing I have to say is that for the price, you can do better. If you are looking at a few different restaurants in this price range, pick the other ones. This one will be okay, but just okay. You won't remember it. Essentially, the food is basic. The theme is simple lounge room. I could never recommend this restaurant to anyone, and I'm genuinely shocked that it's scored so highly. I will mention that the food is good - but not great to the point where you want more of anything. It's just a bit okay and not worth it (and by it I mean going to Stanmore and spending that much on a basic dinner). Like I said, for the same price there are much better restaurants.

Absolutely wonderful. I’m a coeliac and the standard of food was wonderful. I also by choice don’t eat red meat, squid, oysters, but will always at least try if offered in a degustation. I’m so glad I did, the kangaroo tartare tasted delicious however the knockout dish for me was the oddly paired squid and mushroom that was just divine. It’s a testament to their skill if they can get a failed wannabe vegetarian to eat kangaroo and squid. We opted for the wine pairing and were not disappointed and discovered a lovely wine from Bathurst of all places.

The service is amazing and the food exceptional. I extremely nice touch having the chefs explain each dish. Great wine selection and the bread is next level. One little disappointment is that to charge a credit card surcharge on top of an expensive meal I think should be able to be absorbed as part of the price.

Attention to detail in service, preparation and service right down to synchronised plate laying on tables. Great theatre! We had the paired wine tasting menu. Amazing food-delicate,punchy and ingenious flavours combined to delight and entice the taste buds. We said delicious many times! Two guests per staff member to ensure that the overall experience is prestigious and attentive. Save your pennies for fabulous dining experience! Decadent and moorish! Well worth it!

‘The best'? Enjoyment of food always depends on place, time, company... But sixpenny Stanmore is certainly my main contender for that superlative. Perhaps the best meal I’ve ever had. And one reason was that it was the food that did it. It wasn’t the setting, the decor or even the service (all of which were excellent). The food. The cruller and kombu tart were a great start, but things generally got better and better... Kangaroo tartare? Sensational. Slightly gamey, spicey, gorgeous. The dried cheese thingy on top was, perhaps, superfluous, but perhaps added a salty edge to the ‘roo. The absolute, unbelievable, standout for me was the sea bass with sour beer and lemon Myrtle (I'm sure he said sea bass, rather than dory, as is listed on the menu). Just an unbelievable combination of flavours which shouldn’t really work, but does on such a level as to make the dish something beyond anything I’ve ever tasted before. Taste is, of course, entirely subjective, but this was the best dish I’ve ever tasted. And I don’t like fish much. Everything else, including desserts, was superb. Another thing worth its own paragraph is the wine matching, which was, apart from one miss, sensational. And let’s face it, the miss was just me. Go. Enjoy.

This was a divine dinner experience, we loved it so much. The staff are all lovely, the chefs coming out to serve different dishes and explain their composition is a delightful detail. The dishes aren’t overly experimental to the point they’re strange, they’re perfectly balanced but also not like anything we’ve had before. I recommend pacing yourself on the bread, as delicious and tempting as it is, the menu is copious so you want to have room for all the main dishes. The desserts are such a beautiful surprise, from start to end such a great story. We would be back every night if we could. The mandarin mocktail is heaven as well! A perfect place for a celebration.

Whilst we enjoyed the innovative food and were impressed by the extensive and expensive wine list, we did find the overall experience as a little odd. Whilst we understood it was a degustation, there was no a la carte menu. So we felt pressganged into a tight routine. We had to ask for an explanation as to what was coming and how many courses. Oddly we were presented with a menu after the meal. ???? We found the brown decor as dreary and the many steps in low light to the bathroom as problematic. But... evaluating the couses individually, they were innovative, beautifully presented and staff including wait staff and chefs were impressive and knowledgeable. We noted from research that the courses we had were referred to in numerous articles going back some number of years, so it seems the menu is not changed often The wine list is excellent with a broad range of wines from many regions Overall we enjoyed our time here but it might be a time for a refresh of everything.

The interior of the restaurant had an elegant, calming and understated decor, perfect setting for the food which was absolutely first class. Every dish was amazing and surprising. The flavours were so unique that it was a delight trying to taste everything in each dish. The portion sizes were perfect, generous but not too much and the timing between the dishes equally perfect. The service was impeccable from the moment we walked in until we walked out. We chose not to have wine pairing and instead chose our own drinks but next time we go we will definitely do wine pairing. Cannot recommend this place enough.

Sixpenny is one of the best fine dining restaurants in Sydney for the finer taste. Although the venue is not big and looks already quite dated, but the service was superb although all tables were full. Most importantly the 6 courses of food served on the table tasted very good and finely seasoned. The presentation was not overly done like several other overrated venues with more emphasised on too much of gimmicky presentation but not tasting fine enough.

The last flawless restaurant I visited like this one was Sepia which has sadly closed. Frankly, when I stepped foot into the restaurant, I was taken aback by the plain decor and setting. But then, the attention to detail of the whole evening experience did win me over completely in the end. Three snack dishes, three seafood dishes, one meat dish and two desserts each exhibiting delicate balance of flavours and cooking skills. Two sour dough bread was a bit of left field design and struck accord. I was so engaged with the experience that I forgot my standard end of meal ritual - the coffee.

We came to Sixpenny on Thursday night for dinner. The meal was superb, and I would argue the best that I have ever tasted, and that includes Michelin rated restaurants and some of the best of London and Paris. Why do I say this? 1. The exceptional freshness of the various dishes. 2. The intensity of flavours. 3. The elegance of the components for each dish; not so many components as to overwhelm and a perfect marriage of ingredients which allowed for both the individual ingredient to shine while contributing to the synchronous result. 4. The elegant presentation of each dish. So many restaurants miss the mark by trying too hard to impress and fall into pretension. Sixpenny is simply elegant. The Spring Pea Tart with Whipped Goats Curd must take the prize for its stand-out burst of flavour and freshness. The Roasted Barley Koji Ice cream with Pear and Marsala was simply sensational. Thank you.

Degustation menu with 7 courses plus starters and optional oysters (do yourself a favour and have a couple). We selected our own wine rather than matching wines. Easy to park around the corner, lovely interior with good room between tables. Service spot on. Food the highlight and thoroughly enjoyed every course. Wine beautiful. Not cheap but worth every cent. Usually I don’t agree with SMH choices of 3 hatted restaurants but this is an exception.
