CAFE OF THE YEAR! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? SERIOUSLY? What was the Age Good Food Guide thinking when they gave Lorna Cafe of the year 2023? Really? Something very shifty about that award for sure 🤔 It’s impossible to give this place “cafe of the...year” and I’ll tell you why…….. 1. On arrival, 4 of us had to stand around like a bunch of idiots waiting to be seated, even though we’d reserved a table a full week earlier. The customers milling around the front door inside was ridiculous. No one had anywhere to go but squeeze themselves into a space somewhere around the cafe, so you wouldn’t get mowed down by the waiter staff trying to squeeze past you. What an absolute ridiculous setup 🙄 2. Breakfast orders for 4 were served and all just really luke warm. Not even close to being hot enough. Far from palatable. Poached eggs not cooked correctly. Egg white inside was extremely undercooked. Harmful bacteria is in an undercooked egg which can make someone very sick. Toast was not toast. Their toast was virtually still bread barely toasted, so cutting it was soft as…. 3. And to top the morning off was when I took a trip to the bathroom before we left and was absolutely astonished as to how filthy it was. The whole bathroom area was disgusting! Honestly, just the bathroom was enough to shut the place down. If that’s what they present to their customers, then what the hell is going on in their kitchen regarding cleanliness? And their staff & management personal cleanliness? Honest to god, it was the filthiest bathroom area I have ever visited. And this filth wasn’t because they were busy and hadn’t had time to clean. This filth I’m talking about has been there for months if not years! What a damn disgrace and Lorna Cafe should be ashamed of themselves for presenting such a disgusting area for customers to use a toilet. Not just the filthy toilet and under seat lid. I’m talking the WHOLE toilet! It hadn’t been wiped down for god only knows how long! Floor corners gave it away big time with the filthy dirt and dust. Rear of toilet seat below cistern was FILTHY. So Age Good Food Guide…….. Pull up your socks and review correctly and don’t deceive the public with your rubbish reviews. There are wonderful cafes in that area which would top Lorna Cafe any day of the week. The best in Melbourne? Good grief!??? And Lorna Cafe…… for heavens sake, buy some heating lamps for your kitchen to keep the food hot while it’s waiting to be taken to tables. There’s no excuse nowadays for food that is served barely even luke warm, instead of being hot as it should be. 4. Knock down your prices. You’re asking too much for what is presented. You may present food looking reasonably nice, but it doesn’t taste nice if it’s virtually stone COLD! 5. Hire a cleaner in for the day to clean that bathroom area and toilet, as it will take a full day to get through all the filth in there!🤬 We certainly won’t be back!More

Waited 3-4 mins to be served for seating - there were several tables available nearby and it would’ve been easy to quickly direct us to one of them given the facility was getting busy with people waiting for coffee, but the barista told us to...wait, which we did, but it then took 3-4 minutes to be taken to a table. I ordered smashed avocado on toast. The quantity of avocado was generous but my poached egg was just warm, the ‘toast’ was barely cooked despite me asking for it to be well done, and to my taste, the pickled carrots were too bitter and overpowering for the overall flavour balance of the dish, even accounting for the dukkah. My coffee was fine, but the milk was right on the edge of being burnt/scalded. No pepper in the pepper mill - a minor point but another little thing that took the edge off the experience. When I went to pay I then had to wait another 2 minutes despite three staff members being behind the counter. I realise they could’ve been doing other things, and two minutes isn’t intolerable, but my impression had been set by this stage that from a customer service perspective, the business wasn’t particularly efficient. I had witnessed a fairly busy cafe with at times, six or more people waiting around for takeaway coffees, and at one point at least six people queueing to pay, while one staff member replenished coffee packets on a shelf (for customers to buy) instead of attending to what I thought were more pressing customer service needs. Even when I asked to have the pepper mill replaced, the waiter took the pepper mill behind the main counter, grabbed some alternatives and shook them to ensure they had pepper in them, and then brought a replacement out to me. I thought it would have been more efficient to take the pepper mill (of course checking it also wasn’t empty) from either empty table on either side of me (the tables were set apart and I wasn’t able to easily reach these myself) and replacing it immediately rather than taking it away and doing so. Again – a minor point but also a contributor to the overall experience. Lastly, not one staff member asked us whether we enjoyed our meals, including went Pain, and after the meals were served, no one came up to us and asked if there was anything further they could offer or help with. The service seemed, from a process and motion/efficiency perspective, to be off the mark. Our overall bill was $63.10 – eggs your way with bacon, mushrooms, and relish, and separately, avocado on toast with a poached egg, plus one mug of coffee. The week before we went to Tosaria Restaurant in Rowville, had an Asian prawn omelette, a large egg and bacon roll with relish, and a mug of coffee for $38.63. I realise that’s not an apples with apples comparison, but it’s a huge price differential nonetheless. And to put my comparison into perspective, we have eaten breakfast across 15+ local cafes once a week for the last three years (lockdowns the exception) and very rarely paid over $60, typically paying in the high $40s. I’ve given a 3 out of 5 star rating because overall it was fine/average, but it wasn’t a stand out and not worth the higher pricing. We went there hoping this would be a refreshing new venue we could add to our list of breakfast favourites, but unfortunately we were disappointed. Lorna needs to be significantly better than lacklustre for us to return.More

Didn’t book for breakfast - we (two) were just walk-ups. The place was quite busy when we landed but there were 4-5 tables available, Still it did take some time to be seated due to lack of available staff. Breakfast menu choices were ok (but...not special). Table service was good. My wife and I ordered different meals but each requested well done toast. Meals were delivered in a reasonable timeframe with the staff member repeating our orders back as he laid the meal down - including the fact that the toast was well done. Immediately we could see that the bread had, at best, been waved under heat. It was the least cooked toast we have seen in the last 40-50 cafes we’ve eaten breakfast at. The rest of our meal quality was ok but not a standout. For the prices, we won’t be back.More

I really don't understand the great reviews on this place. I've dropped in a couple of times in the last few months for a coffee and a snack/cake etc. Purely takeaway. The wait for someone to get to you and take your order is lengthy,...the wait to get your coffee is lengthy and the cakes I have selected every time look great...really do LOOK GREAT, but are rock hard, tasteless and just impossible to eat. There's plenty to choose from, I guess because nobody is actually buying them. It's a try hard place to be hip/cool etc. but I'm not even sure the staff are really that interested in being there either. There's no genuine interest in customers, I get better service in a McDonalds drive thru without the pretension. CheersMore

Have been a long time patron of Lorna and Maria. Has it recently changed hands? New Chef? Ordered breakfast for myself and my adult daughter. Both had scrambled eggs on toasted sourdough with different additions to both. Firstly, bread wasn't toasted at all however was...soaked in olive oil. This made it tough and was far too much oil. Eggs were drizzled again in oil. Too much. Smashed avocado was clearly premixed from days ago and was brown and tasteless. Daughters one bacon rasher was fine. Halloumi cheese was overcooked to the point of being almost inedible. Earl grey tea was so weak it had no flavour whatsoever (made with a bag not real leaves). Cost me $60 for this really average, underwhelming breakfast. Well you know what - I wont be back, money is tight these days and you should get quality when you pay top dollar.More

First time here. Waited 15mins to get order taken. 30 mins after ordering we had to chase up our drinks. 45mins after ordering had to chase up our food to be told it would be another 3 mins. After waiting yet another 10 mins we...walked out. Could understand if they were busy, they were not. Could also understand if our order was a big breakfast cook up... all we ordered was an egg and bacon roll and a ham and cheese crossaint. Was fun sitting there watching people come in after us, order, eat and leave while we couldn't get any basic service. Dont waste your time going. I would give zero if I could!More

Exceptional food and service. Stopped at this unique cafe as it was the namesake of one of my guests. Was not disappointed, loved the “Benny”. Definitely recommend Lorna Cafe

Very Busy cafe with nice coffee. We were staying just down the road and Lorna was just a two minute walk, which was very convenient. There were other coffee places closer but not as good.

After reading the award Lorna received in the age Good Food Guide, we practically raced up the highway to have a look and see if it matched the award blurb. There was some things to like, and some to improve on! Sadly, Lorna Cafe did...not live up to the wording of the award on this visit. "The Cafe of the Year also takes pride in its food, decor and service." Coffee was not hot, the Cuban pulled pork sandwich was in fact a baguette that was burnt on top, and also had far too much mustard which overshadowed the other ingredients. We could have requested hot coffee, and a new meal however, considering that it took ages for our initial meal to arrive, we just got on with what we had in front of us. Service was sadly lacking attention to detail. We were seated in the room off to the side which was great as it was a little more quiet than in the main area where people were coming and going for takeaway. Staff were coming and going in this area, however, did not make any eye contact to acknowledge we might be ready to order, nor refill water at any stage, despite passing by on many occasions. Every interaction had to be instigated by us! Our plates were left on the table for almost 20 mins after finishing our meals, and as it was a warm day, there were a few pesky flies intent on finishing the remains of our food. Understand how busy staff are these days, however, as they are passing it's easy to ask if anything else is required, remove plates, and even refill drinks. They were not that busy on our visit, with several tables empty. We really wanted it to live up to the award as a local establishment, just not quite got there on this visit.More

We went there for brunch. It was busy but not overcrowded. We found the service a bit slow but we were not in the rush, so… The food was as good as last time. Good quality, variety of menu and decent portions, even with 2...adolescent boys. A dish for breakfast with yogurt of some sort fruits and granola would be a good addition the menu.More

Melbourne came out of lockdown and what better way to celebrate than with a relaxed, Sunday brekkie with friends at Lorna's cafe. This was my 3rd visit and I've enjoyed it each time. Friendly staff welcome you at the door and this sets the tone....The menu consists of full flavour meals with great ingredients not seen on other cafe menus. I had the Smashed Avocardo and I thoroughly recomend it. My friends enjoyed the Brekky Burger and the Lamb Baked Eggs. You've gotta love Melbourne's cafes.More
