Have been eating John's stew for over 55 years. It is not the original owner but it is really close to the original recipe. John's is always busy from 12-1 pm it is small and during lunch may be hard to get a table. Known for their stew but, all food is plentiful and priced right. A must when in... More

As always, the stew was excellent. Staff congenial. Really had more food than I should have eaten (but I ate it all anyway).

Yes the food is great but....... If you can handle being treated like your an inconvenience have at it! Made my last trip here today unless there are some major changes in personnel. I had tried to call in an order on my way but no one would answer. Upon arrival there wasn't a sole in the place. So while... More

When I was a kid there was a commercial- "I can't believe I ate the whole thing" Me - today - lunch. Then, with my bib still on, I had warm peach cobbler ala mode. Oh my goodness Goodness Goodness. About all I can say is do not miss a chance to visit this Indianapolis one of a kind.

I love to take out-of-guests here. Between the dive look, the huge bowls of magnificent, meaty stew, and the low prices, everybody loves this gem. Leave room for the cobbler. And remember, this is a bar, so leave the kids at home.

What a treasure I have found! This beef stew reminded me of Mom and home. Yum. And more than a person should eat at lunch---but it was so good I couldn't stop eating it. Served with two slices of bread and butter. It's a non descript building- you wouldn't know a restaurant was inside. The waitresses are funny- no nonsense,... More

Basically a slightly funky bar, (This is meant in a good way, by the way). But on the menu is stew-- rich, flavorful, filling - a real delight. It comes in three levels of spicy. Medium is jus that, spicy is spicy but not crazy hot. Good. I saw on the menu other wonderful things I associate with my hungarian... More

I love this place. Doesn't look like much on the outside but much nicer inside and the food is great. Had some of the "hot" stew and it's pretty spicy. The pork tenderloin is as delicious as it is gigantic.
