We have eaten at the Philo Tavern a few times. Each time we've tried something new and loved it. If you can, go on a Friday or Saturday. Their fish on Friday is so crispy and tasty. I don't know how the french fries are prepared, but I could make a meal just on those. Then on Saturday the prime... More

This was a hidden gem of my University of Illinois days, with an outstanding Prime Rib Night on Saturdays. As it's been a number of years since we graduated, we went back for a visit and were so glad to find that nothing had changed. Service and food are all excellent for a little out-of-the-way place. We don't make it... More

Hubby and I try to go for bar food on Saturdays, so we'll drive somewhere just for that. Happened that we chose Philo Tavern and really enjoyed the atmosphere of small town friendliness and exceptional bar food. Great food choices & drink choices. We look forward to going back in the summer as it appeared they had an outdoor covered... More

Great service, delicious food, and a small salad bar. Worth the 20-minute drive from Champaign-Urbana for something a little homier. Somewhat limited menu but everything is good. My father-in-law always orders the frog legs when he visits. I guess they're hard to find. Wouldn't know; wouldn't eat them myself. Outdoor seating in season. Friendly service and lots of "locals."

I do not live in the area and was told to stop in. Never had frog legs before and they were excellent, my wife had there steak, she said it was tender and could cut it with a fork. I will have to stop in again the next time we past through.

I hadn't been to the Philo Tavern in a few years and had heard they weren't as good as in the past. However, to my surprise it was up to it's original standards. When we arrived it was packed. The wait was not too long, the service was small town friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. The chicken... More

This has always been a destination restaurant for very casual dining with great catfish. There's been an upgrade of the menu lately with some additional offerings (e.g. sweet potatoes, not just fries or baked potato). The salad bar seems to have more options but unfortunately the lettuce and spinach was swimming in water. The baked potatoes had to have been... More
