Easter Monday lunchtime and close to the end of lunch time, we wandered in thinking we were too late, having just been very rudely treated at the nearby Drovers Inn. What a refreshing welcome. The place was busy but we were welcomed as soon as we arrived and invited to eat or just have a drink. The staff were all... More

Now been twice to KJI, once before Christmas and once since. Second time we took the family. 25 miles away, so quite a stretch for a pub lunch. We think it worth it. If I call this a gastropub it sounds posier than it is. What you get is traditional pub food like a roast and fish and chips, done... More

We've eaten at the King John Inn as part of our stay there and really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The food was excellent particularly the pork terrine as a starter. Nothing overly fancy just really well done.

We stayed here for a night (see separate review) and were delighted to find that the restaurant is really excellent in its price bracket. The atmosphere in the room is casual but comfortable and the bar is well stocked. We had four courses, including cheese. Particularly noteworthy was the hake, served with cockles and mushrooms in a wild garlic veloute... More

We visited the King John for the first time and were disappointed at the lack of choice for non-meat eaters. A choice of fish-finger sandwich - and chips, fish - and chips or cheese souffle - and chips. The small souffle came with salad, which turned out to be just leaves. I chose the lamb which was very well seasoned... More

Visited the lovely king John inn for dinner (18/02/17) the setting was beautiful inside, A warming fire and candles lighting up every table making it that little bit brighter. Food was superb, I had the cheese soufflé as always and my partner had the hake both no complaints what so ever, always live up to the standards. Staff, I had... More

This little gem is a great find! Gorgeous food, their home made bread - so simple but delicious and all reasonably priced. Quick and friendly service, tables nicely spread out and a lovely country pub atmosphere. We can't wait to go back!

Not sure what the other viewers experienced, but our lunch was great. Their website suggests a set lunch menu is available, but there isn't (and hasn't been for some time). The starters were delicious, and for mains we enjoyed fish and chips and the smoked pork tenderloin. Both were excellent - nice meaty fish, homemade tartare and an interesting and... More

We were shown to our table but we arrived just before a table of five and disappointingly they were dealt with before us. I had to ask the young server if we could order some drinks but she was quite confused by this weirdly. Eventually we ordered. I had the burger. The burger was nice but the fridge cold mayonnaise... The 2nd time we have been here. A lovely room, smarter than other gastronomic pubs. Good menu, I had soufflé which was very good, I can recommend this. My friends had lamb and fish & chips, both also great. Lemon posset to die for!!!! Staff friendly but service very slow, I even had to get up to find someone to... More

Description
Situated in the scenic village of Tollard Royal in rural Wiltshire, The King John Inn is a Victorian and award-wining country inn offering beautiful accommodation, delicious food and a warm, friendly service.

Our Head Chef is an accomplished fisherman, bakes his own bread, makes his own cheese and still finds time to get up early and catch local game when in season so you can expect that every plate on the King John menu is as fresh as it can be and is expertly crafted with a passion for the local countryside. We are proud to have recently received 1 Rosette from the AA.

In summer, our terraced garden is the perfect place to dine alfresco while watching the chefs in action in their Victorian-inspired outdoor kitchen. In winter, relax near our roaring-log fires in our open plan pub or in the informal restaurant.

The bar provides an ever-changing selection of imported drafts and local beers as well as an extensive wine list.

Our eight en-suite bedrooms combine modern comfort with rustic elegance and feature luxurious linen, Nespresso machines, flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, direct dial phones and luxurious toiletries.

Salisbury and its cathedral are only a 30 minute drive away whilst the beautiful hillside town of Shaftesbury is only 20 minutes. The King John Inn also sits within a 5-minute walk of the historic Rushmore Park, an area of lawn and open woodland home to the Rushmore Golf Club.
