After a long visit to the Art Institute, we stopped at the Art Institute of Chicago for lunch. My roast chicken and whipped potatoes were excellent -- the whipped potatoes were clearly made from real potatoes, and not instant flakes. My wife's corned beef on...More

This classic German style restaurant is simply the best! Food was awesome, service was top notch, and dinner was well paced. Lovely atmosphere! I would go again if I get the chance.

I stopped by this place for several reasons, the history, the food, and I wanted to try the root beer! The food did not disappoint and the root beer was phenomenal. It is on tap and was originally brewed during the Prohibition, they kept it...More

Dear Americans, Please don't be mistaken that the food at the Berghoff is authentically German. Far from it. It tastes like in a third rated restaurant of a provincial Kneipe in the Ruhrgebiet. Nothing to write home about, and certainly too expensive for the quality...More

The Berghoff is a Chicago tradition, and lunch at this "palace" on West Adams Street should be on every visitor's to-do list. The German food and beer brewed by the Berghoff itself are excellent for the palate. I dropped by for a late lunch and...More

We stopped here for root-beer and pretzels as part of a food tour, and we would love to go back sometime for dinner. This bar survived prohibition by serving root-beer. The bar is ornately carved and just beautiful. The pretzels with three dipping sauces were...More

We stopped for an appetizer on one afternoon, and went back the next evening for dinner. Lots of items on the menu to try! We had Squash Lasagna, Bacon Wrapped Shrimp and Pepper Encrusted Steak Salad. Would order all of them again!

Not at all. We walked in wearing tourist uniform (shorts, t-shirt, and bag pack) and we didn't feel out of place at all.

I would call the berghoff to be sure but my guess is you could go & put your name on a list. When we were there, the restaurant was far from full so we were seated immediately but that was a weekday.

The Berghoff Restaurant is a Chicago landmark, serving German-style cuisine and culture since 1898. One of the oldest family-run businesses in the nation, it is now run by fourth generation, Pete Berghoff. At today’s Berghoff, menus have evolved to add newer, lighter and more contemporary dishes, but it’s still the same old Berghoff, down to the famous root beer. Open for lunch and dinner, the Berghoff’s wide variety of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and entrées is sure to satisfy everyone in your party. With fresh ingredients, seasonal menus and vegetarian & gluten-free dishes, it's “tradition with a twist!” Private Dining provides a truly unique event experience within the setting of the historic Berghoff building. Host your next event in one of our four private rooms. Contact us to start planning today!
