We’ve been here several times before for afternoon tea- cakes and coffees were nice, but several times could not get scones as they had run out.
Decided to take visiting family there for lunch today (public holiday Monday) - what a shock to see the...menu prices! Fortunately we were told upfront that there were no more pie of the day (chicken and leek) available, as it was $29! (We were also told, once again, that they had run out of scones already, by early afternoon -surely by now they could anticipate that they will need extra prepared on a public holiday-especially as do many reviewers have mentioned the same problem?).
Chicken Caesar salad and seafood plate were both reasonably sized, although still pricey, but unfortunately, both of the open steak sandwiches ($27!) we ordered were small, tough and gristly.
Having left the bits I could not chew on the plate, I commented to the server (the owner, perhaps?) when she came to clear the plates, that it was full of gristle. I felt her reply of, “Oh really, that’s very expensive steak-thanks for letting us know,” was more snarky than sorry, especially in the absence of anything even remotely resembling an apology! The fact that both of the steak sandwiches we ordered were of the same poor quality suggests that this was not a random one-off piece of bad luck.
Having cooked steak sandwiches myself at home many times, I know for certain that the cook would have been fully aware of the amount of gristle and the sub-standard quality of the steak she was about to cook.
Aside from that, the “open” style meant that I had to use a knife and fork to eat it, and with the steak being so tough, found this very difficult to do with the normal dinner knife that was supplied. The piece of bread was tiny and completely out-proportioned by the steak (which is saying something, as that also was on the small side), and had gone soggy by the time I was midway through.
Will return for the beautiful views and native birds, but will not be paying through the nose to eat there again.More
