We stopped for lunch having had this place recommended by the local village where we were staying - we weren't disappointed. The owner was pleased to see us and very welcoming. He suggested a mixture of small dishes which were all excellent - especially the fresh spinach pie. We sat up on a covered, grassed area with views of the... More

Although the road to the restaurant is not the best, you will definitely be rewarded by the overall experience. The place couldn't be more simple... At the same time, though, the food is scrumptious! All ingredients are locally produced by the family and dishes are absolutely delicious. We had a selection of several dishes, since we were a company of... More

This is no average place. The owner does not need to pretend anything. No stars to hunt for, no expensive furniture or decorations. People just come to sit, relax and enjoy the wonderful home made food. And the view!

The drive from Chania to Drakona is breathtaking, and this taverna was the jewel in the crown. All meals are sourced from the farm and surrounds. The owner is a wonderful and warm person, and invited us in to the kitchen to show us his traditional methods of cooking. The food is simply amazing, one of our best meals in... More

I have travelled all over Crete and I still believe that Stelio's tavern is one of the best in Chania and Crete. The food there is delicious... since Stelios uses his own vegetables and herbs and his own meat. He rarely uses electricity everything is cooked in wood stoven, the bread, the lamp with different herbs, the beef stakes ...... More

Exceptional food that is all farm raised. The food is homemade and slowly cooked on a wood burning fire. We enjoyed everything that we ate and would highly recommend this tavern to anyone. We will most definitely revisit this place when in Xania. George Frangiadakis

We came here as a group of 10 for lunch. The drive is stunning, Through the hills and majestic mountain views. Once we arrived you could see the clay pots over wood burning fires... the smell was wonderful. We sat by a large table by the cozy fireplace and proceeded to order all but a 3 items offered for the... More

This is a wonderful family run restaurant perched on the mountainside outside Chania. We visited on 31st December and had a fantastic and very memorable last lunch of the year! The menu is described by the waiter, and if you are spoilt for choice you can sample a half portion of a variety of dishes. All the food is reared... More

One of the best parts of traveling is experiencing authentic local food and you're not going to find an better place to do it than here. The food for the day is slow cooked in clay pots over a fire using only local ingredients. If you're looking for a quick meal, this isn't the place for you, but if you're... More

Dounias Today I went to heaven and lived to describe the experience. I arrived at Dounias in the town of Drakona on Crete just south of Chania. Instead of being met by angels, I was welcomed by chef Stelious and his wonderful staff. The setting is sublimely beautiful in the mountains in a tiny village. It is December 17, 2016,... More
