Old-timers will remember the old Summerhouse restaurant that was located on Midnight Pass Road on Siesta Key in Sarasota, Florida, for several years. It opened in the 1970s and closed in 2004 to make room for high-rises and residences. Today, Summer House is back, a...traditional steakhouse with a seafood attitude. With a fish tank of 1,000 gallons that weights 10,000 pounds and is 14 feet long. And 436 bottles in the wine cellar. Located at 149 Avenida Messina in the heart of Siesta Key Village, off Ocean Boulevard, it has emerged as one of the hottest new restaurants in Sarasota. Open from 4 to 10 Sunday through Thursday and 4 to 11 on Friday and Saturday, the new Summer House has nothing to do with the original but chef Evan Gastman says the name is intended as a nod to Siesta Key history. Gastman works at the Summer House and oversees the food at the adjacent The Cottage, The Beach Club and Hub Baja-Grille. All four are owned by Michael Gronthon and Chris Brown. For dinner at the Summer House, my wife and I started with a colossal shrimp cocktail, a bowl of lobster bisque and a Caesar salad with chopped hearts of romaine, garlic chips, pickled shallot, shaved Grana Padano and fontinella focaccia. For her entree, my wife had Apple Balsamic Glazed Scottish Salmon with baby carrots, fennel pernod puree, Meyer lemon aioli and Boursin mashed potatoes. I had a 10-ounce filet mignon with bleu cheese crust, truffle bearnaise sauce, a jumbo baked potato, creamed spinach and wild mushrooms and onions. For dessert, we shared chocolate cake with caramel and panna cotta with whipped cream. The old Summerhouse was never like this.More
