This was a great place for a birthday lunch! Food was great and very casual atmosphere. The portions were huge and very good. Really enjoyed it.

Eating- and drinking- options are surprisingly limited in Essex. There are really only a couple of choices for dinner in the village. The Griswold Inn or The Black Seal. We've eaten at both frequently over the past year or so. "The Gris" is the 'go to' tourist place. Almost anyone who visits Essex, will end up there. However, walk up... More

The pub was very lively, it seemed to be a hangout with locals and was a bit too noisy near the bar area. We stopped in for lunch and the service was friendly and attentive. We were in the mood for seafood for lunch but the menu was limited if you didn't want to order a full dinner. We ordered... More

Stop shop dining for many, many years. My last experience was needless to say, NOT GOOD! Lack luster service if any at all.. Too many busy people not paying attention to the clients accept for the locals, who never have a tab. It is very annoying to paying consumers. SKIP THE SEAL GO TO THE GRIS>>...They learned from their mistakes... More

Small Pub with nautical theme accents. Each table has a small vase of fresh flowers and a candle which is kind of classy and a bit romantic. Server was very pleasant and food came out timely. The hamburger was good and the corn beef ruben was also well. The wings on the other hand were small and not that spicy.... More

Loved the nautical decor, dimly lit dining room....we had baked scrod with crab stuffing and it was very good as was the calamari with sliced cherry peppers. Lots of noise at the bar but didn't bother us...fairly priced

We had been here before and always thought the food was just ok, but we liked the atmosphere. We brought a couple from out of town last night for dinner, and we all loved our food! From the mussels in pasta (a bit rich), to the Mahi, to the scrod, and fish n chips, all were really good. No complaints.... More

The specials are really good especially when they change daily. I love the spinach salad, always fresh and tasty. Although it is a little squashed, it really feels friendly. Not fine dining, but usually okay.
