We came for a nice family dinner on a Friday night. We made reservations and showed up a few minutes early. The hostess, who we later found out was the owners wife, was frankly rude and had no personality. Once seated our server was super...More

We had a fairly large party. Not sure what was happening, but we overheard that some of their employees had quit. The food was definitely overpriced and not extremely tasty. We would not visit them again as there are so many good restaurants to choose...More

Came to this place tonight for a small bite and drinks. The place wasn’t even crowded but we decided to sit at the bar. We sat down for about 6-7 minutes, nobody even acknowledged our presence so my husband decided to go to a different...More

We have dined at Kingfish over the years, won't ever go back. On a cold night the heat wasn't working. Of the 3 items we ordered they were out of 2 of them. Didn't have any brand of sparkling water. Service was mediocre at best....More

Returned after a few months. Is expensive for what you get. Well drinks are also high. Server was black girl & very good. Parking is tough unless you get lucky..

Kingfish has been a staple in downtown San Mateo for years. Convenient to train station and movie complex. Can be pricey.

The seafood was very fresh and tasty. The Tuna Tartare was excellent, with a bit of heat and sesame oil, it was very pleasant. The oysters I had were small, and didn't really have much flavor. Overall the meal was a tasty experience!

I was quite disappointed to learn that they don't serve food for lunch except weekends! My favorites would be the oyster bar, warm salad, skirt steak is a pleasure ~ The staff are well groomed & friendly with at most service!

Description
Kingfish Restaurant, named after Huey Long, "the colorful, bigger than life man", is a restaurant that is also "bigger than life and very colorful. Kingfish is a one of a kind restaurant situated in downtown San Mateo in a historical 1920's art deco building. The restaurant features an exhibition Oyster bar, 3 full bars exhibiting a broad range of spirits and talented mixologists. There are 2 wine cellars stocked with some of the very hardest to find wines in the world, a Speakeasy lounge that always has an unparalleled live music line-up, cozy booths, and private dining rooms that would make even the French Quarter jealous. "...to walk into Kingfish is, to walk into someone's dream.", is how acclaimed SF Chronicle food editor, Michael Bauer, referred to the decor at Kingfish. Ownership takes great pride in the fact that they have one of the largest collections of authentic, Southern-Lousiana folk art in the country, to which they are always adding. The food at Kingfish is American and gives almost every palette a reason to crave. There is a passion that emanates directly from the owners, to serve only the freshest seafood possible. The steaks that are served are some of the best and tastiest you can find in the world. The ability to give each guest exactly what they crave and desire has been an increasing goal of Kingfish in recent years.
