The bar has a nice, old-world feel with a good selection of beers and happy hour cocktails. Dinner was delicious with a nice selection of fish and vegetarian choices. Our downstairs booth was perfect to catch up with old friends, while the atmosphere upstairs was more lively (and noisy). A fun night out in San Mateo.

The meats that we ordered was bland. NOT RECOMMENDED. That's why this place only have 3 stars at best.

The taste and quality were excellent; however, the portions on appetizers were really small, especially for the price! Three tiny crab cakes...a teensy pile of calamari that was basically 3 bites...seriously? Our waiter was also the bartender, making service extremely slow. We were very disappointed overall.

We had a work dinner there last week and we're well looked after by friendly staff. I asked for a substitution which the waiter had no issue putting through. The fried calamari w/ tiny jalapeño starter was great and the jumbo grilled prawns were divine! Would definitely go there again! Bookings essential.

We had reservation about 5:30 and we got seated right away. The dining room upstairs was decorated nicely for the holidays. Our server was prompt and checked on us as expected. They used give us little different types of muffin roles but they changed that to warm ciabatta dinner roll which was ok. I prefer the little different breads that... More

We hadn't eaten here for a couple of years, and we arrived without reservations on a Thursday night. We had to sit at the oyster bar as it was crowded, I think with holiday parties. I ordered the beef shanks, which I love. What came was a glob the size of my fist of fat with a few very tasty... More

There are 2 floors to this restaurant so there is plenty of seating. There is also a bar but service is fast. They have good beers on tap and a quieter upstairs. We were seated next to the fireplace but there are plenty of windows to look onto the busy street. It is really close to coffee and ice cream... More

Sometimes we go to a movie and get dinner at Kingfish. Sometimes we're just going out for something tasty and don't want to cook. Whatever our occasion, I love this place. Energy and service is warm, unique and inviting. Service is always friendly. Food and the new menu are amazing. Love the daily specials. Octopus poke is to die for!

Love the remodel. The menu has so many of my favorites and we always have a wonderful time. Last night I had probably my favorite starter- the tuna tartare. Followed up with amazing short ribs and a mule. Definitely the best ambiance and energy in San Mateo. Great addition putting daily specials on the menu.

This was a business dinner. Our associates from the area chose this restaurant. Based on past visits, we knew it would be an outstanding night out. The senior VP ordered the bottle(s) of wine. The service was measured, professional and not overwhelming, which I prefer. The menu was not overpowering but different food categories for the 4 of us to... More

Description
Kingfish Restaurant, named after Huey Long, "the colorful, bigger than life man", is a restaurant that is also "bigger than life and very colorful. Kingfish is a one of a kind restaurant situated in downtown San Mateo in a historical 1920's art deco building. The restaurant features an exhibition Oyster bar, 3 full bars exhibiting a broad range of spirits and talented mixologists. There are 2 wine cellars stocked with some of the very hardest to find wines in the world, a Speakeasy lounge that always has an unparalleled live music line-up, cozy booths, and private dining rooms that would make even the French Quarter jealous. "...to walk into Kingfish is, to walk into someone's dream.", is how acclaimed SF Chronicle food editor, Michael Bauer, referred to the decor at Kingfish. Ownership takes great pride in the fact that they have one of the largest collections of authentic, Southern-Lousiana folk art in the country, to which they are always adding. The food at Kingfish is American and gives almost every palette a reason to crave. There is a passion that emanates directly from the owners, to serve only the freshest seafood possible. The steaks that are served are some of the best and tastiest you can find in the world. The ability to give each guest exactly what they crave and desire has been an increasing goal of Kingfish in recent years.
