This is one of my sister's and niece's favorite restaurants - definitely their favorite when in Pacific Grove! I came for a brunch, a lunch, and a dinner, and would come back again. The food is innovative, tasty, and worth trying. They have good service.
The food:
I tried the Eggs Benedict for brunch and it was delicious, on a croissant, rather than a usual english muffin. It came with seasoned roasted potatoes, which I normally love, but these were watery, as if left in a pot too long, and did not taste great. My friend had the French toast, which only had 2 pieces, so if very hungry, it may not fill you, but she enjoyed it. My other friend had the Portobello sandwich, which she also enjoyed. We had the guava mimosas, which were also delicious!
For dinner, we tried the spinach & cheese ravioli, with the lemon Beurre Blanc sauce, which is delectable!
For lunch, I had the spinach pear salad, which was good, but could have been better. Lunch was last year, so I forget the details of what was a miss, but it didn't leave me wanting to come back for that.
A few areas that could be improved:
1) The outdoor tables are fun to sit at on a nice day. However, be aware that drinks may drip through the iron rails onto your lap, or syrup that is slowly dripping down the side of the container, or catsup that you pour out of a little dish, if set on the table may proceed to drip onto you. If you are careful, not a problem, but seems it would be better to have table cloths down, or use different tables for diners.
2) There is 1 restroom for both men & women. There was someone in there an extraordinarily long time, and people were lined up through the small restaurant. I would not want to be at the tables that people are hovering over while standing in line. And, if you have any urgency, it may not be a great situation. It would be nice if there was a 2nd restroom, and preferably not right next to the dining tables.
3) Food portions are adequate, but if you arrive hungry, you may find you want more. Some dishes may be more filling than others.
Overall, it is a very quaint and cozy place to have a meal. I would definitely come back. They allowed dogs on the patio, which many people brought. They even brought out bowls of water for some of the dogs.

We started our first day in Pacific Beach/Monterey with a fabulous breakfast at Red House Cafe. When we showed up we got an outside table in the street seating area, which was nearly empty at the start of our meal, but had filled up by the time we left.
The food was amazing! I ordered the country breakfast, got bacon and over-medium eggs and subbed a pancake for the potatoes. Perfection! Everything was delicious and just the right amount of food to fuel the thousands of steps I was about to take at the aquarium.
My wife devoured her smoked salmon on potato pancake, and our daughter loved her cinnamon brioche French toast. Our server was attentive and efficient and hustled to make sure we were well taken care of. Highly recommended as a breakfast spot in PG.

When away I like to search for breakfast places that have been in place for over 20 years. This one fit the bill.
The entire ordeal—from sit down to stand up was 30 minutes, and it included dessert. The speed was perfect, the food hit the spot (as it should), and I had the chorizo; it was good. I added avocado to it and should have asked for cheese to make it more moist, but it came with sour cream and flour tortillas. I loved it. I also asked for hot peppers, and Nelson, our waiter, gave us grilled Serrano hot peppers that took our meal to a different level, and it was a great experience. The rest of the table got Benedicts, and they were poached perfectly and delicious. The potatoes can use some help—but we never finished them anyways since we were too full. All in all, it was a nice experience that met our expectations; the quaint home feeling was a pleasant addition to our experience.
Nelson, the waiter, was hospitable, cordial, fast, eager to smile, understands the request as you ask it, and perfectly takes orders and executes delivery. Nelson gets his own 5 stars in this world where we can not find enough labor—and he's a definite gem in the place where he treats the place as his own.
Thank you

We made a reservation in person, three hours before we came, but were placed directly next to the toilet. We had the Old Fashioned Cheeseburger and the first impression was the price of $ 20 on the menu instead of $ 16 as shown on the internet. We ordered them well done but received the burgers quite bloody. We ordered lemonade with a refill but when we asked for it the lemonade was out of stock. We received “Sprite” instead which was chlorified tap water with a hint of citrus. In the end we had to pay an extra charge for paying by credit card.

We went out for a girls' breakfast experience at Red House Cafe last month. We each had something different-- one had smoked salmon on a potato pancake, one had country breakfast and I had a breakfast sandwich. The presentation was pleasing, the food was excellent and the atmosphere was cozy. Even the bathroom was delightful. It wasn't too crowded on a weekday morning, and parking was easy. I would like to come back again.

We came to this restaurant last year and it was great. So, I was disappointed that my chicken was burnt this time. The vegetables and mashed potatoes were still very delicious. My husband enjoyed his chicken parm and thought is was as good as last year. I was dreaming about the yummy cheesecake and we ate at here hoping to get that again. I was disappointed that the cheesecake was not available this time.
I was disappointed with the other desserts we tried. One was an apricot oatmeal cookie which was free even though we offered to pay for it. I think the server felt bad about the burnt chicken. I am a cookie fanatic so I was bummed because I usually love cookies. This cookie was so sweet, it hurt my teeth. It had a weird texture like it was old and reheated. Cookies, in my opinion, should be crispy on the outside and soft in the middle and do not require reheating if made well. The other dessert was a French pear cake (clfoutis). It was not overly sweet, but it definitely needed more pears and less bread. It tasted very eggy, but maybe that is traditional for that type of cake. The service was friendly and helpful.
Lesson learned - Maybe this was an off night for the restaurant. I will have to call a head of time to see what desserts are available next year. Also, I hope they watch the chicken more closely because burnt chicken is not pleasant to eat.

The Red House Cafe was recommended by a friend and we can't thank them enough. We were told this is the "go to" place in Pacific Grove for breakfast and judging by the long lines in the morning they had to be correct. We were told to get in line before 8 a.m. in order to get a table. We were staying at a B&B across the street so we didn't make it to breakfast but we did venture in for lunch. Not only was the food outstanding and well priced but the service was excellent and the quaintness and charm of the restaurant can't be beat.

3 stars. Lunch at the Red House Café was a divisive experience. Many things very good with a couple disappointments. The café is in a charming small cottage with a grandma’s house feel. Not an overwhelming menu but a nice selection of salads and sandwiches with a couple more substantial plates. Baked goods in the case upfront looked very good. Pretty quiet on our visit with no wait for a table. Service was prompt and personable. We chose a couple of sandwiches today. BLT for the wife and a Warmed Tomato Mozzarella for myself. First thing I will say regarding the meal was that the Orzo Pasta salad served alongside the sandwiches was really, really tasty. Perfect pasta, red peppers, red onion, and olives mixed with a bright lemony dressing. Could easily be a meal unto itself with a chunk of warm bread. Tomato/Mozzarella was surprisingly served open faced on a nice crusty bread. Tomatoes were wonderfully sweet and the caramelized onions very flavorful. Disappointingly, rather than fresh mozzarella as expected the cheese appeared to be sliced like a deli cheese. Then full sandwich warmed under a broiler. Unfortunately, dousing of a balsamic dressing made the bread soggy very quickly. Still pretty tasty. The BLT was a mixed bag of flavors depending on the composition of the bite. Sometimes it tasted like bacon and mayo, others sweet caramelized onions. The main issue was with the quantity of mayo and the lettuce, the sandwich insides just slid all over and also caused the roll to disintegrate. This ended up being taken apart and ingredients eaten separately. Wonderful bacon. We both felt, even with the other concerns, more onions on both sandwiches would have been a good thing. Too full for dessert today. While our experience was mixed, I’d come here again in a heartbeat to enjoy another meal. Breakfast looks good.

A great neighborhood place as well as convenient to sights in Monterey including then aquarium. The menu is diverse and all the items we had were outstanding as well tasty.Service was friendly but not intrusive. Our group consisted of a wide range of ages as well as different food restrictions. All members were superbly accomodated.

What a quaint place right in Pacific Grove. This was probably one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. The portebella sandwich was topped with goat cheese, roasted bell peppers and caramelized onions with a balsamic dressing. It was so flavorful! The service was great and the place was really busy.

Menu is very limited if you are gluten intolerant. The waiter had no idea what gluten was and had to go ask what we could eat. It seems as if this popular restaurant is frozen in the past. We had to go to another restaurant to get a dessert. Too bad that Toastie's down the street doesn't serve dinner. They have several gluten-free items on their menu.

We were here in the late afternoon. There is a small menu until 5 p.m., but it contained delicious dishes. The service was also particularly excellent. The restaurant is very stylish and comfortably furnished. Overall, highly recommended.

The food and service were excellent. My wife had the portobello mushrooms with polenta. My daughter and I had the chicken parmigiana and piccata. Both chickens perfectly pan fried with a mixed vegetable. I will be back.
The Raspberry pie was home made and we had a second slice. Amazing.

My husband & I had the most uncomfortable situation we’ve ever encountered at a restaurant tonight. To provide context, a reservation was made months ago for this particular location as we had such a magical time here years ago on New Year’s Eve. We have visited Pacific Grove many times in the past 17+ years, mostly staying at the Seven Gables Inn, and usually eating one meal
(Breakfast, lunch, or dinner) at The Red House. We have ALWAYS enjoyed our food & the service. Sadly, tonight was the very sad & disappointing exception. We ordered the special filet mignon to split between us (menu states $2 for extra plate) as we had done a few years prior. I asked for my half to be cooked well done/butterfly cut. Plates arrive with both pieces of meat cooked exactly the same, medium, like my husband ordered. I cut mine in half and asked the waitress to please have it cooked all the way through as I had requested. Meat returned better, but still not well done. I ate the pieces that I could and gave the rest to my hubby. After dessert, a delish butter cake slice, we received the bill. To our horror, we were charged for 2 complete dinners at $45 a plate! We brought this to our waitress attention, reminding her of our order, extra plate charge, butterfly cut, conversation & she became flustered saying she would talk to her manager, but didn’t think much could be done. When I heard that, I asked to speak to the manager myself so I could explain what happened. Manager arrives, listens to us & states, “ We gave you 2 complete dinners”. No apology, no continued conversation, we received a hard stare. I repeated our order and he cut me off saying, well, it is New Year’s Eve. I have no idea what that was supposed to imply. I returned his stare. Finally, he responds, “Oh, I see what you want here. Let me take care of this for you.” More hard stare. Now, my husband & I were mortified as the manager seemed to be implying that we were attempting to get a free steak dinner. No way! We can afford to order anything we like, but as we were staying at an Inn we wouldn’t have any use for leftovers. Manager returners, places corrected bill on table & walks away in a huff. Again, awkward, strange, & embarrassing. I’ve been served better at fast food places! Not that this establishment cares, but they’ve lost two very loyal customers & fans.
