Last night my girlfriend, myself and another couple had the pleasurable experience of dining at the French restaurant "Church and State" located in Downtown Los Angeles. Living in the San Fernando Valley, we don't venture to the city just for dinner very often, but had heard great things about Church and State. The four of us have spent a ton... More

Was invited to lunch as a group of 4. We had an early reservation and were seated upon arrival. Initial contact was prompt and waters were provided. After studying the menu, we ordered, and we waited. Salads took about 25 minutes and mains took another hour to get to our table. When my steak and fries arrived and my fries... More

We went with a small group of 4 to dinner. For LA the prices were modest and portion sizes were what we'd expect. Here's what we ordered and my thoughts. Escargots de Bourgogne en Croute: If a restaurant is going to serve escargot, I'll order it and was looking forward to tasting these. They serve wild burgundy snails with traditional... More

This restaurant and all its staff need to cut the bad attitude and elitism. The food is just okay and the service is poor. Skip this and try Faith & Flower or Bestia.

We had a group of 8 and were taken care of very well. Appetizers and main courses were amazing and the drinks that were ordered, after suggestions were well appreciated. This establishment is very dark and has a different atmosphere. It is also located in a different part of LA that isn't really busy. Parking is on the street or... More

Great atmophere and amazing french food . The owner was extremely rude and treating the employees with rudeness. Too bad. Good selections of wines, although too expensive in rapport to quality.

Found this place by searching for best Mac and Cheese in LA. It has a very nice atmosphere in a cool part of town and the service was attentive. Food was delicious and I will return soon.

One of the things that really disappoints me about the food scene is when a decent place knows it and then, somehow, the staff become "holier than thou". Hopefully Church and State puts the breaks on and stays chic, not pretentious. With that, the food was excellent. These guys have a very nicely curated wine list (albeit of fairly expensive... More

When I am in search of excellently prepared food that can be enjoyed in a quiet and out of the way restaurant I dine in early afternoon at Church and State. It is less than 10 minutes from Downtown LA and a great place to enjoy simple French food and an extensive wine list. Their onion soup brings back fond... More

Went here with three couples on a Saturday night. Had to wait 45 minutes past our reservation, however, they have an amazing bar to hang out at. The hostess was so good about checking in with us while we waited. The wait was well worth it. The appetizers and main courses were all epic. The charcuterie was to die for,... More

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown
Downtown Los Angeles is a busy metropolis of towering buildings, bustling streets, and industrial warehouses. There is a distinct multiplicity of cultures here with a growing influx of business professionals and hipsters. Many call the evolution of Downtown over recent years gentrification. New lofts, bars, hotels and restaurants are popping up regularly. Downtown is home to some of the very best restaurants in the city leading the LA foodie scene, plus it is the location of cultural and sports venues including the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Staples Center, and the Coliseum at the University of Southern California.
