Considering the good reviews previously, I can only assume they have changed owners or something. As the previous review says, it now appears to be called Africana Bistro. Unfortunately we had a similar experience where we arrived in the afternoon expecting a cosy café but in fact they seemed reluctant to even let us in. The drinks (African tea &... More

First of all, the Cafe is now called Africana Bistro. We wanted to order some different coffees, but no kind of coffee was available, also neither pancakes nor croissant. So finally we ordered African tee and black tee, which took more than half an hour to be served. Instead of amandazi (which we were told would be available) we got... More

I stayed in Musanze in 2011 and this restaurant and coffee shop was relatively new at the time (new enough that it was not listed in the 2010 edition of the Lonely Planet East Africa guide). This restaurant is cozy, comfortable, and serves great coffee and western-style food. This is NOT where you want to go for the authentic Rwandan... More

This used to be the best coffee place in Musanze. The last time we went the did not have any of the things on the menu. Only brochettes and chips. Also, the coffee machines have been sold or taken away... It seems to have become more of a bar. We left very quickly.

We had fresh juice one time and a late lunch another. Food was good and I would consider this a alternative place for a lunch/snack location rather than dinner.

A few months ago they changed names. Location is still the same, and so is the menu. I only go there for coffee, though, so I don't know how the food is. Service is friendly but not very efficient. Make sure to ask for "strong" coffee. The other day my friend's cappuccino (with lots of milk) was stronger than my... More

Unfortunately, the say we stopped at Lava, the water was turned off. This happens periodically in Musanze. So, no coffee drinks. But, the wi-fi was working and they didn't mind that we hung out without eating. If I'm ever in Musanze again, I'll try it. My students enjoyed the food when they were there.

My daughter and I enjoyed an excellent cappuccino and banana bread at the Lava Cafe after our amazing gorilla trek. The wireless internet access allowed us to share our gorilla treking experience with family and friends.

After being served yukky Nescafé everywhere else (how come coffee producing countries don't promote their own products!?), you're gonna love the real and very good coffee the Lava café barista prepares. Don't hesitate to ask for a strong brew if you're into that. Apart from the coffee, they have hired a great chef to make tasty dishes. The regular menu's... More
