I think I might be the first to review since the reopening of the Gateway restaurant takeaway on 18 Feb. My husband is veggie and he's hard to please, so when he says its good, it really is! My daughter and I had the pot...roast beef with potatoes dauphinoise and carrots. Perfection! Thankyou Laurie and Sam. So consistently way above expectations!More

Had our second takeaway from The Gateway which yet again was excellent! They have an eclectic menu including Middle eastern, Indian, French & English dishes which is refreshingly different for a takeaway, the chocolate and halva tart was to die for! Looking forward to visiting...the restaurant post Lockdown. Well done on the use of compostable containers & packaging!More

We had lovely meal at Gateway Restaurant one evening last week. We had saved our visit to the last night of our holiday as the menu sounded so promising. We were not disappointed. My partner had the South Indian Thali and I had the Middle...East Feast. Both contained lots of different tastes and dishes £18 per person. All 10 wines were priced between £18 & £25 and almost all of which you can have by the glass instead if preferred. The deserts offered both familiar and unfamiliar experiences. I enjoyed a lovely rich chocolate and halva tart with passion fruit and creme fraiche and my partner enjoyed the pavlova. A lovely family affair who are obviously passionate about what they are doing and whom it gives great pleasure to see the pleasure they are giving others. Never enjoyed a meal quite like this one before. Wish we lived nearer!More

Lovely meal out with my wife. We had one of the sharing trays (recommend) and the cous cous main. Yum yum. As the restaurant only does one sitting we were never rushed and instead encouraged to have pauses between courses/drinks. Host was great, if you’re...looking for Indian/Thai cuisine this is worth a visit!More

Since the Covid lockdown, the Gateway has re-invented itself from Tearoom to Restaurant, and it’s earning its 5 star reviews with bells on! The menu is kept reassuringly slim, which means every dish is freshly sourced and prepped - including yoghurt and chutneys, ALL homemade....We enjoyed a Middle East Mezze and a South Indian Thali (the lovely chef Sam is half Indian, and told us how she grew up learning Indian cookery skills) - each featured a perfectly composed selection of small dishes, with the slow cooked Dartmoor lamb on both being the star. For drinks, we had the typical Cobra, but also tried a very good, locally brewed IPA. For pudding I had a perfectly light and creamy mango fool, with cardamom biscuits (made on chef Sam, of course). They’ve reduced the number of tables, so it’s super safe in terms of Covid. And the whole atmosphere is warm and somehow incredibly calming. I literally can’t fault this little place!More

See note on opening times at end. The Gateway was our first proper post-C19 night out and we were not disappointed. Mortonhampstead is a small town nestled in the moors. It has a selection of food and drink options but the Gateway is going to...be hard to beat. Ambience The Gateway used to be a tea house but follow C19 they changed to offering takeaway food, then when restrictions relaxed, rebranded to a restaurant. The social distancing rules means that the tables are not on top of each other. The decor is bright and vibrant and the aromas from the kitchen and the subtle music took me to far off lands. Lawrie greeted us with genuine warmth which set the tone for the evening. Food The menu is small and with my wife being veggie was worried there would be little for her. My worry was unfounded. We started with the Samosa Chat and the Onion Samosa. The deconstructed samosa chat was divine and the little pain puris that came with the onion samosa were sublime. For main I had the Thali which was a taster dish, my wife had the Middle Eastern Feast and we shared. The hardest part of the meal was handing half of this gorgeous food to my missus! For desert I had the chocolate and Mrs had the cheesecake. Quite simply the food was beautiful. Sam, working in the little kitchen open to the restaurant, produced some of the most delicate, vibrant, tasty food I have eaten. She has a true talent. Overall our evening could not have been better. With Lawrie at front of house and Sam doing the hard work in the kitchen they have a winning combo. I absolutely recommend this restaurant. At the time of writing this review The Gateway is only open from Thursday to Sunday and has space for about 14.More

Many restaurants get 5 star reviews, because they have a clever chef, who uses great ingredients with a fab front of house team. They work hard and deserve it. Therefore there should be a star rating that rejoices in that tiny percentage of restaurants where...food and service surpass the sublime into an experience where you feel coddled and cuddled in love. Be in no doubt, the small, homespun menu, the perfectly curated drinks and wine list; Laurie's perfect service which at times apes Manuel while balanced with your most caring uncle are all worthy of high praise: but then the food arrives. Words fall into the realm of redundancy. This was without doubt the finest, most delicious, clever and authentic meal I have eaten in a very long time. Bravo.More

We went for Dinner at the new Gateway Bistro. We took our friends along, service was superb, not formal relaxed but professional. Starters were beautifully presented, great flavours and textures. Main course I went for the Muddle eastern feast whilst my wife went for the...Indian feast. The dishes were excellent, so many flavours that complemented each other. Good selection of deserts - go for the chocolate tart . Good wine list, reasonably priced drinks. Will go back 100%. Thank you Sam and Laurie great eveningMore
