(Don’t believe what you read if blokes hate on this place. They obviously should go be going to a frickin’ Applebees or Chilis.)
I was staying nearby and asked a hotel employee where to get some late night food and drinks. They enthusiastically suggested Hugo’s. Walking down into the basement reminded me of bars in NYC’s Bowery District.
They close at 10 but let me get comfortable at the bar. I ordered a turkey club which was so good. The bacon was fresh cooked, the turkey was high quality “clean” and the mayo plentiful. The chef really cared no matter the time.
The draft beer tasted clean too, love me some clean lines, and my whisky shot looked big. They didn’t rush me out like most places do at closing.
The employees were friendly and unpretentious which made my night. I really liked the whole vibe of the basement speakeasy, dark and let the food and drinks shine. I wish I had a place like this in St. Pete as it would be my weekly hangout. A gem of a spot.

The atmosphere is fun. Played Speakeasy type music. It is dark lighting that added to the atmosphere (needed our phone flashlights to see the menu). They have a large menu with many sandwich and burger options, plus some other salad, soup and appetizers. They have vegetarian options too.
It is a small restaurant below a business so it feels like you are going into the cellar. Keep in mind the stairs are a little steep.
Our waitress was good and attentive but the kitchen was a little slow with the food. The food was good.

We visited Hugo's multiple times a year over a seven year run when our kids went to Arkansas. This was our first time back since 2018! I love this place. Walking down the stairs under the sidewalk is just fun. The cellar/rathskeller feel inside is great.
Burger and fries are our go-to favorite and they didn't disappoint during this visit. The flavors are so good. The fries are hot and crispy. I found a new reason to love Hugo's. They have an incredible selection of top shelf bourbons! Blanton's, Stag, Nulu, EH Taylor, Weller, Old Forester and more.

The only positive about Hugo’s is the service. Despite being fully packed they immediately seated us at a table for 2, and the waitress always had a smile despite being overloaded. Cons: everything else! Had potato skins as an appetizer- it was mostly filled with non flavorful cheese. Bacon was scarce, and chives only seen in the dip. I added mushrooms to my Swiss and bacon burger and they were the only flavor in the whole greasy mess. Oh, and despite it being noon it was so dark inside we had to use the flashlight on our phones to read the menu. -1 for wait staff for not asking if I wanted dessert. (They asked large tables but not us.) They just brought the check and left. If the kitchen could learn how to cook without huge amounts of grease and let the flavors come through this restaurant might actually be worth the prices they charge. Since they don’t, they aren’t. Try somewhere else.

It has been at least 10 years since I have eaten at Hugo's (around 10-12 years so roughly 2012.) What I noticed about this visit is that they have changed the quality and quantity of the hamburger patties since my last visit along with their fries. The hamburger patty is the preformed (and likely) frozen variety so no longer hand-made patties. The fries are now the frozen type you can get anywhere and were good, but not great and certainly not hand-cut fresh potatoes of the past. It seemed like the patty was roughly 1/4 lb (had me immediately thinking of the 80's commercial: where's the beef!)
It was so disappointing that I don't see myself going there again unfortunately.

Hamburgers and local craft brew in a fun atmosphere near the university campus. I had swiss bacon cheeseburger and it was melt in your mouth delicious. We were lucky to get in when we did. There was a line out the door by the time we left.

I placed a Google Review, but the short of it was the Manager was rude and very, very, very slow in working with us to get our handicapped and elderly friend access to the alley entrance which has 3 stairs instead of the main entrance which has 11 stairs which were covered in ice and snow. We will eat their again as the waiter was awesome, but I cannot recommend taking anyone in a walker or wheelchair there. We also found the manager to be very rude and not sympathetic to our needs at all. In fact he made a derogatory comment.

I was politely greeted by the bartender who was knowledgeable and informative about the beer offerings on tap the two beers he recommended to were both delicious. The bacon Swiss burger was incredible had a flavor that made it differ from other burgers I've had wonderfully unique. And to take back to the hotel room I ordered some peach and amaretto crepes that were delightful. It's a pretty small little restaurant with limited seating due to covid but well worth the wait.

Cool place but the food/service was not good. I ordered nachos and the cheese was complete plastic — almost like playdoe. I could peel it off without any residue and it tasted bad. Chips were also cheap and definitely store bought. I don’t recomend!

We were looking for an establishment to drink coffee around 4pm.
After several tours of the Downtown Center, we pushed the door of this establishment whose basement entrance is rather hidden. It was customers who came out that allowed us to see it.
As soon as the door crossed gray contrasts between the silence (desert) of the street and the hubbub of the restaurant, obviously very frequented.
Small blind room in the basement with many tables, a long bar (with the stock of drinks hidden behind) and the small kitchen at the back.
We're accepted at the bar for coffee, prepared for us at the coffee maker.
Great welcome, service and atmosphere.
The coffee mug is far from espresso but good.
You have to go for the atmosphere and the menu.

When I arrived (no reservation) the house was packed with people and I almost was prepared for a long waiting time or to be sent away. But immediately I was sent to one of unoccupied small tables at the wall obviously for very small parties. The food came promptly, the waitress was friendly and it was a nice experience.

Down two short flights of stairs just off the Fayetteville square - somewhat of a Cheers vibe. Burgers are some of the best around, especially the Black & Blue. They actually cook them to the temp you order (far too “rare” in a burger joint these days)! Homemade fries are awesome - one order is more than enough for two. Finishing with a crepe or a cheese plate is the way to go.
Pro tip - if it’s a cold day grab a table near the back wall, the steam pipes will keep you toasty

We were visiting from out of town to visit my college student . We were not greeted at the door by the hostess and decided to sit down at an empty table since no employee was around. No signs were visible to wait to be seated and no one was waiting for a table that we could visibly see. The hostess came over and rolled her eyes stating the table was not clean . The hostess then cleaned the empty table top and asked us to get up. We did as the hostess asked politely and explained no one greeted us - we were not aware of the process . Finally, we put our name on the list after multiple eye rolls from the hostess.
After that , we waited about 10 minutes for another open table. The server provided good service but was not warm. The food was fantastic but we will not be back due to the lack of customer service and snarky attitudes.

We stopped in this location as it is a stable of the area. It has street parking with parking garages near by, is handicapped accessible in the back only, and has clean restrooms. Location is dark, bar like delightfulness, with attentive service. Menu is limited but the hamburgers are delightful. There are specials of the day and delicious desert crapes. We tried the artichoke spinach dip, delicious and the basket of fries, terrible. I did speak up about the fries, they took them right off and did not give us any grief. Atmosphere is very bar like, the decor is historical, and there are steep steps going down to the basement where restaurant is located.

Tuesday dining 7:30 the vibe is energizing. Good mix of business folks, students and adult diners. Fish Taco special is top shelf. White fish is light not fishy with a subtle char. Amazing meal and one of the best fish tacos in the area!!! Fries could stand to be cooked until crispy. Cook pull the fries before the outside crisped up so they were limp.
