On our first night in BA we asked one of the desk clerks at the Casa Calma hotel for a nearby restaurant with plenty of meat. He recommended La Chacra (this was the only bad recommendation we received from the hotel!), which was only a few blocks away. Very large dining room with various meats being grilled and otherwise cooked... More

Recently we moved away from the nearby La Chacra, it has been closed the last few months and they have been selling the interior fittings. Perhaps this means they are refurbishing . . .I don't know, but for now it is closed.

I have been here a few times and I think everything is very good. The steak I had on this trip was a little chewy but it was so thick it almost didn't matter. The area is nice and in the shopping district. The appetizer plates going around were full of good stuff and the empanada appetizer made me wish... More

This restaurant is closed for renovation. Tried reaching them for a reservation for 25 people both by email 2 days prior (no response) & telephone - no answer - suggests very poor management.

We just visited last weekend and ate lunch here. Colossal mistake. We saw the meat cooking through the front window and were reeled in. The Atmosphere inside was morbid, with heads of animals on the wall and no background music. My husband and I both ordered the sirloin, but he ordered his 'la chacra style'. When the food came, my... I was looking for somewhere different for Saturday evening dinner. I had walked passed La Chacra many times and seen the meats cooking. Looked nice but never before ventured in. We went in at around 7pm, the place had very few customers, but it was during the final of the Copa America with Chile playing Argentina so perhaps everyone was... More

Our guide warned us that meals are large in Buenos Aires & he was right. Most of us ordered meals to share & still had plenty to eat. The restaurant staff were more than willing to plate the meals separately but while charging for only one meal, which I think is extremely generous. We dined at 7.30, very early by... More

Traditional Argentinian parrilla, very good meat and wines, friendly and attentive service, unfortunately not cheap (but worth the price).

Staying in Retiro

Neighbourhood Profile
Exquisite palaces and luxurious apartment buildings combine with art galleries and exclusive boutiques to make Retiro the perfect spot for those who enjoy sophistication. However, the non-stop foot traffic to and from Retiro train and bus terminals, accompanied by the myriad of trucks leaving and arriving at the port, mean this neighbourhood is never truly at rest. One minute you are walking down a street dotted with ornate mansions and luxurious shop windows and the next you find yourself surrounded by a sea of people racing to catch their train or bus. It is this juxtaposition of never-ending comings and goings and quiet, elegant luxury that defines Retiro, as well as Buenos Aires, a city where sharp contrasts are all around.
