I love Thai food, and for Durban, it does not get more authentic than Kung Thai where Nina who is part owner and chef is Thai. I have never had a bad meal at Kung Thai and have tried many of the items on their...More

Since the departure of Yum Thai, the area has been in need of a decent Thai restaurant so we thought we'd pop into Kung Thai. Kung Thai has the chef from Yum Thai so we were hoping for big things. We opted for take away...More

I think this restaurant is over rated. I love Thai and I always go when I can find one however the taste here is only average. The service continues the theme of middle of the road. A missed opportunity in view of the excellent location...More

Good service and tasty food. The selection on offer was quite wide, with several variations possible.

Kung Thai - there is one in Durban North and one in Umhlanga - is a favourite eatery because the food is the same standard as you would get in a good restaurant in Thailand. I feel I can compare it to Baan Khanita in...More

Description
The success of Kung Thai Durban North has now given birth to what Nina (Chef and proprietor) and Kit (proprietor) calls their "new baby" in the village in Umhlanga. The name Kung Thai, "City of Thai" and the logo of the dragonfly was inspired by the fusion of eastern tastes from every Thai city and the dragonfly symbolizes freedom. The decor of Kung Thai is minimilistic, red and white with signs of 'home' throughout. Picture Kung Thai Restaurant - Umhlanga in Umhlanga Rocks, Umhlanga, Northern Suburbs (DBN), Durban and Surrounds, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa The menu is true Thai inspiration and most of the herbs used in the dishes are grown by Nina in her garden at home. A meal at Kung Thai is a meal that assures you of true Thai authenticity. Adamant on quality, every meal is prepared fresh and if Nina is unhappy about the freshness of a single ingredient then she'd rather not make the dish. Picture Kung Thai Restaurant - Umhlanga in Umhlanga Rocks, Umhlanga, Northern Suburbs (DBN), Durban and Surrounds, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa Every mouthful of every meal is a trip of the senses to Thailand, from the Puu Cha ( Prawn and Crab donuts) to the Chu Chee Duck (Crispy duck served on a bed of spinach, topped with red curry paste, coconut milk, lime leaf, basil and chilli) There is a standard menu with all the Thai favourites but as Nina explains she gets bored easily so she has an additional Specials menu, which changes regularly. When asked what her 'signature dish' is, with absolute humility and total lack of vanity, Nina answers "Everything. I can't say" because people return time and again and always try different menu items, so much so that all items are as popular as each other.
