We desperately wanted a drink of sorts after walking around town. The plan was to see a matinee show, but it was cancelled. So we went to the cafe. First Costa Rica coffee of our trip! Excellent! Check out the vaulted and painted ceiling. Outstanding.

We stopped here for coffee before our tour. It is a beautiful little café that is off the lobby of the National Theatre. We looked out over the square and enjoyed our coffee. Since it was afternoon I had decaf and it was the best I've had anywhere. My wife enjoyed a latté. Please rather than go to Starbucks across... More

After visiting the the Pre Colombian Gold museum we went there for lunch. It is in the National Theatre, so prices are a bit high. I had the quiche, which was very good, my wife had a veggie sandwich on a pita, also very good. Coffee was superb, they had decaf, a rarity in San Jose. My limonota ( lemonade) was... More

A nice little bistro tucked inside the National Theatre. Very good service and a surprisingly extensive menu including salads, soups, sandwiches and crepes. Wine and beer available too. Save room for the spectacular desserts. Great midday stop if taking a walking tour through the city.

The setting is stunning. In the nice national theatre the place has the prime location. The food was decent but not more than average and the service slow, and the prices steep as expected. The toilets are inside the theatre and you can enter with the bill from the Cafe and see the theatre from inside.

What a charming darling cafe. Hubby and I were visiting the Teatro and I simply had to stop at the Cafe for coffee. It was our first full day in Costa Rica, and as we were entering the Teatro to tour the gorgeous building, I spied this charming little cafe located just inside the teatro to the right. Hubby and... Having visited the National Theatre, this made a nice place to refresh ourselves! Nice surrounding, great coffee, and sumptuous cakes - what more could one ask for.

A very pleasant place for a coffee after the Theatre tour. Tables were very close together to cope with demand. The service was reasonable and the coffee good. The fig cake was expensive for only a small portion and I must admit it was rather dry and tasteless for the money.

Delightful, elegant and classic 19th century cafe. Such a nice fin de siecle feeling. Great cakes, huge sandwiches and all served up with aplomb. We did not expect to end up here but on glimpsing through the doorway decided to stay. Excellent waiters.

Alma de Café (coffee soul) is probably the place with the best coffee, sandwiches, and desserts in the heart of San Jose, Costa Rica. The staff is very kind and knowledgeable. Don't miss starring at the beautiful cealing. It's a little crowded during the afternoon but definetely worth it.
