I am from Istanbul and have eaten at numerous Turkish restaurants outside of Turkey. Garlic can easily be in the top 5 if a worldwide ranking was made, especially since they're managing it in this crazy city where decent local service staff is as rare as days with clear blue skies. The building where Garlic is located is a quite... More

Visiting a friend who lives in Shanghai we were invited to her favourite restaurant she visits frequently with her colleagues from work. The place looks classy, tables are beautifully set. The first impression is really stunning. That's all about the positive. Having visited Germany with their trizillions of Turkish restaurants and also Balkanic states I knew what to expect and... This restaurant is certainly very upbeat and vibrant - a lot of Western groups in on the Saturday night we visited - and it seemed to have multiple sittings. Very stylish space and really authentic and fresh Turkish food (lamb is a must). I will certainly return.

Cool & classy. Great friendly staff. Our chinese company was divided, the younger ones loved it the elder ones prefer chinese food. Lovely bread and small dishes that you dip the bread in. Good barbecue. Great place to take western business partners if you want a very informal but stylish dinner.

Food was very good, staff very attentive and polite. Good quality food. We have two starters, two mains, no drinks for the equivalent of about £40. I would recommend booking, we were very lucky to walk in off the street without a booking and get a table, people after us were not so lucky.

This place was already nice but they remodeled recently so we went back to try. Previously the Childrens play room was quite worn out with nothing fun for kids to do. Post renovation i honestly don't see much difference in the restaurant. It was already nice looking so I'm not sure what changed. The children's play room however it is... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
